They are incredible.  I forget how many national championships they've won but it's multiple.  What's really neat is that there are no divisions in the sport so we complete against schools like the U of Illinois and other D1 level institutions.  Plus we're starting a women's wheelchair program as well.

I was going to mention U of Illinois - don't UWW and UI pretty much own ALL the national titles lately?  (But unless teams actually give athletic scholies in this sport, I'm not sure of the d1 vs. d3 relevance.)

I don't know that the competition is governed by the NCAA... I think it may have its own governing body.  The banners in Kachel Gym (if my memory serves me correctly) is something like "National Wheelchair Basketball Association" or something similar.

Not that it matters... the best is still the best.

I found a great video from one of the participants talking about UWW's various programs for disabled students... LINK

I don't know that D1, DIII has any relevance in terms of the level of play or the level of finanical assistance an athlete can receive.  I don't think that there are scholarships per se.  I only reference it to highlight the difference in the student body size between the institutions that WW competes against.  Though I suppose that rings somewhat hollow considering I've argued it's irrelevant in the private/public debate.

At any  rate we are really proud of the things our wheelchair athletes have accomplished and as an institution UW-WHITEWATER continues to be dedicated to meeting the educational as well as the athletic needs of disabled students.

Absolutely.

And I don't know the rules in terms of wheelchair basketball competition (like if the players have to be unable to use their legs to compete, or if some of the general student population could compete as well), but if it is like I think, then the student population that the team draws from is smaller than the total.  And based on Whitewater's specialized programs, they may actually have MORE students to select from based on population of disabled students versus schools that have a larger population in the general student population.

And I don't know if there is any kind of wheelchair basketball available for disabled students younger than college age, but if that exists, there may potentially be some aspect of recruiting.  I did note that there is are intramurals for wheelchair basketball as well.

That's so true.

I've gotta admit, whenever we played at Whitewater, I always loved to see the disabled students that would come out and support the Warhawks.  Somebody I grew up with who had cerebral palsy that I was a "student helper" for in grade school ended up going to UWW because of the CSD (Center for Students with Disabilities).  And the Wheelchair basketball team has had even more success than the Mens basketball team!

The Wheelchair basketball team was there, and alway into the game when we played there.  I also think they may talk more trash to the visiting team (in good spirits of the game) than Whitewater's team on the floor at the time.  Always good to get a good ribbing in from the crowd, but most creative came from those guys.  It was fun.  They called out one of my teammates once, and all we could do was tell him they were right and laugh at him.  Did this happen to anyone else that visited Whitewater?

The wheelchair players are terrific supporters of both the men's and women's programs.

Pointspecial,

I was looking over Puget Sound's schedule...and low and behold, I see UWSP on the schedule to visit memorial fieldhouse again.  Not much has changed, both teams are still ranked in the Top 25 with high hopes for this year.

I'm excited to get another shot at you guys...the loses in 05 and 06  still sting a tiny bit.  I'm just glad there is no Kaslow, Bennet, or 6'9 guy named Mouse on the team this time around  ;D
I know it's pretty early still...I haven't gotten a feel for UPS yet.  I'll check back in a few weeks when it is closer to gametime to see what you think about UWSP this year

I love the senior all-star game idea.

I'm amazed at Point's #10 ranking.  They lose three senior starters and another part-time starter.

Whitewater loses 4 senior starters.

Platteville loses 3 senior starters including co-player of the year Skemp.

Oshkosh loses two of the "Big 3".

The WARHAWKS had their intrasquad scrimmage last night.  After watching the team play one another I came away with one general observation.  Our staff has a lot of work to do before the season starts for real.
