I also want to extend best wishes to Schrimpf.  It's such a shock when someone so young has to deal with a heart condition.  Hopefully the surgery goes smoothly and he has a complete recovery.
Here is a quote that was in the paper this morning.....

Schrimpf, who missed all of last season because he had a growth removed from the back of his kneecap, has been sidelined since the UW-Whitewater game because of an irregular heartbeat caused by a condition called WPW. The ailment causes Schrimpf's heart to race as well as skip beats. According to Schrimpf his heartbeat had been monitored beating 280 times in one minute.

280 Beats Per Minute!!!!  That is incredible!!!  Typically, the rule of thumb is that your MAXIMUM heart rate shouldn't get higher than 220-your age.....  Supposedly the cardiologist stated that if he wasn't in such great shape (like most NCAA athletes are) things could have been much worse!!!

1. Player of the Year-D.J. Marsh
-He is argualby the best player in the WIAC.  He's in the Top 5 in most statistical categories, leading the WIAC in scoring, and is 3rd in rebounding.  Now the argument will come up that how is the team 2-6 in WIAC play if he is so good.  Easy, he doesn't get much help.  Runner-up-Dustin Mitchell
2. Coach of the Year-Pat Miller
-He gets my vote for the simple fact that he had to replace his entire starting line-up and yet still Whitewater is in a 1st place tie at the halfway point of the WIAC season.
3. Newcomer of the Year (Freshman or transfer)-DJ Dantzler
-While he doesn't start for the Warhawks, he provides a spark off the bench similar to what Jordan Taylor was doing for the Badgers before the injury to Leuer.  Runner-ups-Dan Tillema and Marcus Helland
4. All-Conference (Starting 5-no position requirements)
-D.J. Marsh
-Dustin Mitchell
-Jake Smith
-Wade Guerin
(Averaging a double-double in WIAC play)
-Curt Hanson
Honoarable Mention-Tony Mane and Jontae Koonkaew
-The first three were easy, however I had to actually look at the stats for the last two choices.
5. Surprise Team-Whitewater
-See above regarding Coach of the Year
6. Disappointing Team-Oshkosh??
-In all honesty there isn't one team that just hops out at you like normal.  Everyone is on pace for at least four WIAC wins, which would be the most for a last place team since 2004-05 when La Crosse and River Falls each finished 4-12.  I guess reluctantly I would take Oshkosh mostly because of their predicted finish by the WIAC SID's, but I have said from day one that wasn't a fair projection because of Marsh having little help.
7. Conference winner-Stevens Point
The reason I take them over Whitewater is because of how things played out in the first half.  Whitewater struggled in each of their previous two games before last night against Oshkosh and Eau Claire.  What did they have in common?  Both played zone, and until Whitewater proves they can hit the outsie shot consistently, I have a feeling they will see more zone, and may "slip-up" against a team they should beat.

I have to admit to being stunned that we beat Oshkosh there.

Not to mention you played a Greg Schrimpfless Oshkosh team. According the Oshkosh radio guy, Schrimpf will be having heart surgery in the next few days. Too bad for both Greg and Oshkosh becuase he was really starting to come around after the knee injury last season shooting 12-20 from three point range in his last 2 1/2 games.

I was going to say something snippy to Old School, but this is more important.  I hope that his surgery goes well.  It is truly stunning to have a healthy young man in such dire condition.

I always enjoy snippy comments!

Cubs, I think we all saw your posts prior to the games in the WIAC pick em board and the WIAC Fantasy board about "circumstances have changed" etc, etc, etc.  I guess most of us were wondering what made you change your roster and pick.  I realize that the Schrimpf thing was pretty serious and I think, out of respect, we all appreciate keeping it from the public until it was made public, but I guess you just could've said, "Schrimpf isn't playing" and some of us might have changed our picks as well!  ??? ::) >:( ;D :D ;)

Mr. Downtown

With his heart condition, will Schrimpf be able to play again after surgery?

Its not the first time I've heard about an Oshkosh athlete having heart problems, but that was found to be the case prior to the season, and not in the midst. I hope he comes through okay.

The story cubs quoted from The Oshkosh Daily Nowhere says he's expected to miss two weeks.

My 2cents worth:

POY - Marsh. but if you wanted MVP I'd have to make that Mitchell, who is making the Warhawks the top 10 team they are today.

Coach - Miller by a nose over Flora. I concur with cubs about the job Miller has done all year. Flora stepped in to a situ where the team could have just gave up with their HC jumping ship after starting the building process and has done a good job.

Newcomer - Bendall is in the top ten of most statistical categories in the WIAC.

Starting 5 - Marsh - Smith - Hanson - Mitchell - Mane

Surprise - WW by  a hair over Stout

Disappointment - Oshkosh - can't develop any players to give Marsh a chance to go out a winner

Winner - hmmmmm WW travels to Point next week in what could be the deciding game, but WW has 5 of last 8 at home with no real challenges left on the road. Point has LX and Platte on the road the last week.  I'll go with Point ;D :o

I don't think many thought playing at Zorn was supposed to be a challenge.  ;D

Greek Tragedy

1. Player of the Year
DJ Marsh-He's pretty unstoppable.  As Frodo said, if it's MVP, it would go to Mitchell because he's helped his team to such a good record.  But, Marsh is the best player.

2. Coach of the Year
I'll have to go with Miller since he had so much to replace.

3. Newcomer of the Year (Freshman or transfer)
Bendall-He has one year of eligibility left and he's putting it to good use!

4. All-Conference (Starting 5-no position requirements)
Mitchell:  Best post player in the league
Marsh:  Probably the most exciting player and most difficult to defend
Guerin:  As mentioned above, averaging a double/double in league play
Jake Smith:  2nd in scoring, 4th in rebounding
Curt Hanson:  Very good scorer

5. Surprise Team
Eau Claire:  They lose an all-conference player in Dan Beyer and then Ryan Shea (HM) decides not to play and no Jacob Schlub (what happened?)

6. Disappointing Team
I'll have to go with River Falls-They return all 5 starters.  Thought they'd be better than 2-6.  Oshkosh isn't a disappointment because I have no idea why the coaches picked them 3rd in the preseason.

7. Conference winner
I'll go with Point because they have Whitewater at home, even though Point has a tougher road schedule with trips to Stout, La Crosse, Platteville and Oshkosh this weekend.

That's a tough blow for Schrimpf and Oshkosh, no matter how long he's out.  Two weeks only?  Wow.  Hope all goes well for him.

I hope for his sake that the two week recovery time means the surgery isn't as serious or invasive as what typically comes to mind when one hears "heart surgery."
