And for those who are keeping score at home, here are the latest standings:

1) UWSP 9-2 and 18-2 overall
2) Whitewater 8-2 and 16-3
3) UWL 6-5 and 14-6
4) UWP 5-5 and 11-8
5) Superior 5-6 and 11-8
6) Stout 5-6 and 10-9
7) UWEC 4-6 and 12-7 ***
8) UWO 4-7 and 9-10
9) UWRF 2-9 and 8-12

Pretty ugly, especially if you look at the overall records of the teams 4-9...

With Wednesday's schedule, to stir the pot even more, as we get in position to head down the home stretch in conference play:
UW-Eau Claire @ UW-River Falls
UW-La Crosse @ UW-Whitewater
UW-Platteville @ UW-Oshkosh
UW-Stevens Point @ UW-Stout

*** "Oh the pain... the pain." (Dr. Zachary Smith) = UWEC on the outside looking in, if the season were to end today... Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio????

OK - that's two pop culture references for the day... bye...

Any of you prognosticators willing to change your mind about Stout this year?  Everyone (including me :() had Stout finishing dead last this year and maybe they still will, but for what it's worth, this team really impresses me right now.

Had to sift through the PointSpecial basketball dictionary to find this one a few pages back, but it reminds me of the old country song   "How Do You Like Me Now?"

A few observations about the Stout win:
1.  If there is a better player in the conference then Dustin Mitchell, I have not seen him
2.  Pat Miller's technical was big.  Stout got 4points out of it and it seemed to quiet the WW crowd and players.  (It seemed like a cheap one.  I have no idea what he said, but it was quiet and it wasn't much.
3.  The WW venue is amazing.  Someone needs some credit for creating an electric atmosphere.  I remember watching WW play years ago (and they were winning then too) and the gym was empty and dead.  The sausage races and the cheer/dance/Pom/gymnastics whatever the hell you call them (the girl doing the splits on top of the pyramid) were my favorites.

Nothing wrong with this technically BUT ... UWW still has the edge of #1 based on their season series sweep of UWSP

Stout just flat out took it to us and beat us in every facet of the game.  They shot better,.  They rebounded better.  They defended better.  If there was anything that could be done better Stout did it.   After it was over thank you, God I mentioned to Eddie that the game reminded me of the WIAC tournament game several years ago in which as the #1 seeded school we hosted #8 Stout and they mauled us unmercifully.  I just can't believe how flat we were.  It will be a tough loss to shake off but there's no time to feel sorry for ourselves with LaCrosse coming to town Wednesday.  Hopefully we've put it behind us by then.

Stoutguy, the girl doing the splits was pretty cool.  Good to see you again.  Until the next time, take care.

Greek Tragedy

It was interesting to hear, at the end of Whitewater's win against Point, that it was a subdued celebration on the floor at Quandt.  At the time, it seemed like Pat had the players' heads on straight, basically telling them, "It's a win, a nice win, but we still have work cut out for us."  It kind of reminded me of the difference when Peyton Manning was lifting the AFC title trophy and not really celebrating and when Drew Brees was lifting the NFC title trophy, the Saints players were going wild.

Anyway, my point is that I thought Whitewater had the right frame of mind and go about their business and beat a team they were supposed to beat (in theory), but I'm not sure if the Point win got to their heads or what, but coming out flat and getting destroyed (Stout was up by as many as 28, I think) is just not right, especially at home.

I looked to see who Whitewater played before losing to Eau Claire and it was Oshkosh in overtime.  I realize the Warhawks had to go to Eau Claire, so the circumstances were different.  So, is Whitewater better than Point because they've beaten them twice or is Point better because they are beating teams they are supposed to beat while Whitewater slips?

What's the old saying?  To be the best, you have to beat the best?  Maybe not!

I was semi impressed that Oshkosh was able to go up to River Falls and beat the Falcons despite DJ Marsh playing just 24 minutes because of foul trouble.  Obviously Jake Voeltz isn't 100% because he continues to come off the bench and play limited minutes and, by the boxscore, doesn't seem to be contributing too much.  It has really hurt River Falls.

What's up with La Crosse?  Do they just stand around and wait for Mane to shoot?  He has attempted 335 shots going into last night's game, by far more than anyone else in the league, even DJ Marsh (258).  I'm just wondering if the players or fans are getting annoyed.  I have not seen La Crosse play, but is there off the ball movement when Mane has the ball?  To Mane's credit, he did shoot over 50% last night.

Dustin Mitchell could very well win Player of the Year, but is he really the best player in the league?  An obvious advantage is that no one can match his height.  I don't want to take anything away from him at all, but those extra inches sure do help!

Wade Guerin is a complete stud.  I think he's averaging a double-double after going for 21 pts and 13 rebs last night.  His 19 pts and 21 rebs performance is the best this year, I think.

Old School's Sporadic Unofficial In-Season Conference Power Rankings

1. Whitewater (16-3 overall, 8-2 in conference, 1-1 since last rankings)
Huge win against Point on the road after being down 15 at the break, but what happened at home vs. Stout?  What a let down.

2. Stevens Point (18-2, 9-2, 1-1)
Tough loss at home against Whitewater after blowing that big lead, but bounces back and absolutely destroys Superior, a team that had just beaten Platteville and River Falls

3. La Crosse (14-6, 6-5, 1-1)
Jekyll and Hyde continues for the Eagles.  After a solid win against an improving Stout team, they head to Platteville and lose by 22.

4.  Stout (10-9, 5-6, 1-1)
I'm trying to figure out how a team can lose to an up-and-down La Crosse team and then go into Whitewater and knock off the Warhawks right after they beat Point at Quandt.

5.  Platteville (11-8, 5-5, 1-0)
After a tough week last week, they bounce back after a much needed break to take care of La Crosse in easy fashion.

6.  Oshkosh (9-10, 4-7, 2-0)
Showing life.  Two road wins in a row in the WIAC is nothing to ignore.  Eau Claire had been playing well and won in River Falls with Marsh in foul trouble.

7.  Superior (11-8, 5-6, 1-1)
I think Superior forgot to remember they have to go on the road after their win at home vs. River Falls.  They totally forget to show up at Point, scoring just 14 points in the first half.

8.  Eau Claire (12-7, 4-6, 0-1)
Routed at home by Oshkosh doesn't help their cause.  Thought they were on the right track with a win against Whitewater and La Crosse and a close loss to Point.

9.  River Falls (8-12, 2-9, 0-2)
Jake Voeltz injury tough to take.  Guerin trying to hold up the fort but the Falcons just don't have enough fire power.

Actually, Point would be up by a 1/2 game.  If both teams were 9-2, then this would be correct, but due to the fact that WW has had their bye and Point has not means that WW needs to get a win in that week to match Point.

Checked the CCIW page and saw that Elmhurst was 0-8 in conference and 5-14 overall.  I guess those guys over there were right and us WIACers who thought Elmhurst was pretty decent were way off!

Mane was on fire in the first half.  22 points.  But he wasn't fouled, and the rest of the team managed to miss all ten free throws in the first half.  ???

I think everyone on this La Crosse team does a lot of standing around except Al Cherry.  To give Mane credit, he is much more willing to dish to an open teammate than in previous seasons.

Platteville played well and earned their win.  A final factor in the game was that the hot La Crosse three point shooting disappeared.

Brian and I agreed that it was a dispiriting loss.

Also...

D.J. Reese (backup PG) is out for the season.

Koonkaew didnt play in the second half, he left with an ankle injury.

Aaron Anderson still hasnt recovered from his sciatic nerve. He watched the game in street clothes.

At the end of the game, 4 of the 5 guys that were in our opening day starting line-up were out of the game. (Hannigan fouled out.)

Mitchell has worked his butt off in the weight room and on the floor.  Height can help in some regards but if you don't have the game to go with it you aren't going to be as good as he is.  If he's fortunate enough to earn POY honors it will be because of the effort he's put into his body and his game since joining the program and not because of those few extra inches.
