So, just to make sure I'm clear on this, all we (Superior) have to do is beat Whitewater. There.

OK. Well. OK.

Actually no, Superior is in.  Even if they lose to WW and EC beats Stout.  This is option B1.

The only way EAU CLAIRE gets in is if Superior beats Whitewater, EC beats Stout and Platteville loses to River Falls.

Actually, it went remarkably quick once I had the baseline (I set up a matrix of the outcomes of all of the games already played between each team).  The difficult part was typing it all in my phone... I had an ample couple of minutes here and there while I was waiting for some genuine work-related things.  I basically worked on it little by little from 10:30 until 4:00 when I posted it!  I knew upgrading to that smart phone would be a good idea...!

I thought you must be retired, like me.  :P

Me? Retired?  Yeah right... when I'm old enough to retire, retirement will be one of those things they did back in the olden days...

After reading all that, I have a headache.

I think it was good that I split it up and did it over a long period of time... otherwise I would have gotten a headache too!

I just treated it like a math problem, so it was easier and fun!

As an aside... I was surprised that I didn't find any contingencies that depended upon the order of teams above.  The only times I got to the third criteria, it always came down to which team had beaten Whitewater, and that broke the tie.

And I realize some of the contingencies aren't very likely... but I wanted to cover all the bases so we'll have a clear picture as soon as Sat's games are over.

I just checked some of my work and B4 is wrong...

Sup and Platte split, so it goes to the second criteria.

both teams were 2-6 against teams higher (not 2-4 for Platte and 1-5 for Sup)

goes to third criteria and by virtue of Sup's win over WW (tonight, that necessitates the 8-8 tie between these teams) Sup gets the 4. and Platte the 5.

Not going to be a happy bus headed back to Stevens Point tonight as both UWL teams defeat the Pointers...

88-76 final in the men's game, as Tony Mane puts up 32 and Trevor Stratton 26... Just 11 turnovers between the two teams. Wow.

Ken Koelbl gets his first win against his former team as the Eagles snap an 18-game losing steak to UWSP...

uww4ever

wow, sp lays a big egg but on the road in the wiac is tough.  mane seems to be an excellent shooter, haven't seen the box score but what a scoring machine.
my hawks win, maybe might attempt to make it to the thursday game but saturday is out of the question depending on the thurs result.  wouldn't want to face La Crosse with Mane and others cuz I was at that stout/ww game when we were the number one seed and had to leave in the middle of the second half cuz it was just a slaughter.  couldn't stop the shooters at all.
congrats warhawks.  hopefully we can continue the winning ways and get far into the post season, wiac and beyond.

GO HAWKS!

John Gleich

A wholehearted congrats to UWL and especially Coach K.  I think this may be the biggest W in his time at LaX, and I've felt very conflicted between wanting him to do well and for my allegiance to Point.  It was inevitable that this win would come sometime, and it's a shame that it cost UWSP a conference championship...  I want another banner dangit, guess we'll have to settle for a National one.

Truth be told, I was concerned about this game because of LaX's potential firepower. When they're on, they're very tough to beat.

so here's the order...

1. WW
2. SP
3. LaX
4. Stout
5. Platte
6. Sup

More tomorrow maybe

WHITEWATER led 7-0 in the first four minutes and pushed the lead into double digits 18-6 with 13 minutes to play in the half.  Superior made a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to four points, 20-16 but momentum swung in favor of the WARHAWKS who led by as many as 17 points before the half ended with them up by 15 points 41-26.  With a few exceptions the WARHAWKS maintained a double figure lead through the second half until a 7-0 run by the YellowJackets made the score 62-58 with :46 remaining.  After that the WARHAWKS were 8-8 from the free throw line to seal the 70-63 win.

Dustin Mitchell and Fletcher DuPree (4-8 three-pointers) each scored 18 points to lead the WARHAWKS in scoring and Nolan Free added 10 points.   The WARHAWKS had 15 assists on 24 made shots with Phil Negri's 4 leading the way.

Jake Smith's 23 points led the YellowJackets.

The celebration afterwards.

Noticed that Whitewater plays the LOWEST remaining seed in the semis and Point plays the HIGHEST remaining seed in the other semi.

The NFL has that.  I've never been a fan of that.  I guess when they went to the 6-team tourney, they changed the "brackets" as well.

Tough one to swallow after hearing the score last night.  That happened two years ago when Point went into Platteville with the conference title on the line (a potential tie with Whitewater, ironically) and they got smoked.

And in 2004 when we lost to Superior at home (they swept us, actually) and River Falls won the conference.  Rattled off 9 in a row and won the Walnut and Bronze.

I agree with PS that it was probably Koebl's biggest win at UWL.

Mane was blazing hot in the first half.  21 points, and he hardly ever missed.  Just before halftime, he hurt an ankle.  He was a little gimpy in the second half, but still added a solid ten points.  Stratton was also smoking hot.  In addition, Cherry struggled offensively, but had a solid game defensively and on the boards.  Andrew Haass had a nice game, perhaps his best in his career.

It was a glorious night for our basketball programs.  Now we get a doubleheader Tuesday.  If we should win, I may well make the trip to Point Thursday.

Congrats UWW on taking the WIAC regular season outright (men's and women's)! Great way to start the 2010 year for warhawk athletics...
