Airports nearby are CWA (20 minutes north of Point - served by Delta, United and American), ATW (Appleton - about an hour away - larger and served by a couple more airlines), MSN (Madison- about 1 hr 45 minutes away - still larger and served by more airlines) and GRB (Green Bay - about 1 hr 45 minutes away- and served by a number or airlines).

As for lodging, there is a fairly new Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Fairfield Inn, Country Inn and Suites, Comfort Inn and Suites, Ramada (the last 3 basically within walking distance to the Quandt), Sleep Inn, Hampton Inn and a number of others.  Hope this helps.

My parents always stayed at the Country Inn and Suites and loved it.  There's also a La Quinta on Highway 10 66 (recently changed names), right by Hilltop Pub (which is what should be suggested for pre-post game meals!).

I've stayed at the Comfort Inn & Suites for the last couple of alumni weekends the past few years and that's newly remodeled and very nice too.  The Ramada (formerly the Country Springs Hotel, formerly the Holiday Inn, aka the "old Holiday Inn") is where we had our wedding reception 3.5 years ago and they were in the midst of a remodel then it was sold and switched names 2 years ago.  I should think that they're done with that remodel now... didn't appear they were working on it the last time I was in town.

The Ramada, Comfort Suites and Ramada are all within a quarter mile of each other and about a half mile north of campus.  The La Quinta is maybe about a mile to a mile and a half east of campus.  There's also a Best Western across the street from the La Quinta.  I've never been in there, but I think it's pretty old... I've never heard of anyone who's stayed there.  The Holiday Inn (newly built about 4 years ago) and Holiday Inn Express (built perhaps a year earlier) are maybe 1.5 miles farther west on Highway 10, which is the same road as 66 now, just on the other side of I-39.  There's also a Fairfield Inn on Hwy 10, just east of 39 that I don't know much about.

There's also a Comfort Inn in Plover, just south of Stevens Point (3 or 4 miles) and about 3 exits south at Highway B.  If for some reason these are booked, or if you're looking for a bigger block of rooms than the others can accommodate, try there, it's about 8 years old and very nice as well.

Thanks guys.  I have a bunch of miles on American and just booked from St. Louis to CWA.  It works out very well...if flights are on time, I'm at CWA just 3 hours after I leave STL.  Of course, being a frequent flyer, I know that things can get real dicey at O'Hare (where I connect)...especially on the small, regional flights.

I think the boys from Bloomington have us hooked up at one of the hotels listed above.

Looking forward to some great games.

As for attendance, at least up by Pat and I it was more crowded Sat then Friday.  However, the corners that were filled by Hope and Carleton Fans Friday were maybe 1/2 full Sat night.  I did find it weird that they sold everything as assigned reserved seats rather then GA..but after talking to the UWSP SID, would assume it will be the same way this weekend.

Talking with Pat on the way home last night, most likely the NCAA will send a video crew and d3hoops will provide an audio team for the games so they will all be covered, but there will be no guarantees until probably Tuesday.

We stayed at the Country Inn Friday night, and it was just fine.

I believe Midwest and Northwest still service CWA, but these would be out of region flights from MO. So you won't get frequent flyer miles.  ;)

Good call, Roop.  I'll only get the miles if it comes down to Secondary Criteria.

It appears I'm over 500 miles...

Sticking with NCAA policy, I'm flying.

That is a direct result of the infamous 2005 tournament game against Lawrence, which resulted in weeks of ridiculous debate on these very forums. Every NCAA game has been reserved seating since.

How is it possible to foul out of a basketball game in seven minutes?  ???

Alex Edmunds was whistled for 57 fouls in the 29 games he played in averaging about 25 minutes per game.  Aganist Wooster he fouled out in seven minutes.

Not that it matters, La Quinta is on hwy 10 east coming into town, HillTop on the corner of interstate 39, not highway 66.  Back in those championship years, they also didn't clear out the gym, did they?

Nope... used to be 10, now it's 66.  It's on the west side of 39.  Hilltop is farther west on now-66 (used to be Hwy 10).

I don't remember in 2005 (and we only hosted one game in 2004 so it wasn't a problem).  There weren't that many fans there for Trinity/Hanover if I remember, but the attendance was listed as 2746, same as the Point/UPS game.  I don't remember much about that first day... but I sure remember the second one!

I'm curious about the 2005 UWSP vs. Lawrence game that caused later tournament games at UWSP to be reserved seating. Anyone care to expand on the supposed controversy?

Titan Q

Two things I heard today...

1) IWU vs Carthage will tip at 5:30pm Friday.

2) I guess UW-Stevens Point is clearing the gym between games.  That really stinks.  Why would a school with a 2800-seat gym need to clear it?  I understood when Lawrence had to do it in 2006 (with a 1000 seats)...but I don't understand this at all.

*sigh*

Point hosted Lawrence for a second round game.  At the time, it was general admission. The Point staff reserved two sections for Lawrence fans.  Immediately behind the Viking bench, and in the balcony right above that lower section.  The lower section filled quickly with LU fans (mostly parents and adults). The balcony section still had seats but as tipoff approached the UWSP fans were overflowing into that section that the UWSP event staff had been trying to keep empty.

About 6-8 minutes before tipoff, a large group of LU students arrived. They had been tailgaiting outside. They were directed to the balcony section and went there at first. They apparently didn't like the seats and came back downstairs. They wanted to sit behind the basket although the section was already 2/3 to 3/4 full. Since the game was about to start, the UWSP staff relented and asked those sitting behind the basket to move over or find another seat, which of course wasn't very popular among people that had arrived 30 minutes earlier.

The LU students moved in the best they could, but there still wasn't enought room for them, so the rest sat on the floor which I'm sure wouldn't have made the fire marshall happy.

So by tipoff, we have angry LU students, angry LU parents in support of their students, angry UWSP fans who got moved from seats they had a right to have, and the UWSP athletic director with a big headache.

Then in the proceeding days we had a number of LU fans (OK, one in particular) who made it their crusade for the next 12 months to tell the world how poorly UWSP treats their visiting fans.

I think that about covers it. So this weekend, take your assigned seat, sit down, shut up and enjoy the game. ;)

They don't NEED to clear it. They WANT to clear it. They sell more tickets and make more money when they clear the gym. Plus, it appeals to those fans who only want to attend one game, but not both.  They can by an $6 single game ticket instead of a $10 two-game session.  They did it last weekend and they'll probably do it forever.
