Greek Tragedy

Anyone have a copy of the National Championship game on DVD or tape or something?

My DVR decided to delete my copy before I could tape/DVD it because it was "making room for more recordings" even though it was only at 75% capacity!

I can tell you from personal experience that not providing a salary range definitely discourages HIGHLY QUALIFIED potential candidates.  Schools that do that are trying to get a body on the cheap.
I'm sure UWGB is doing exactly that ... it probably doesn't have the budget or income to support a highly qualified candidate but they are getting some very good candidates none-the-less including Semling.

If Semling or whomever takes the job and is successful they'll move on just like Todd K and Dick Bennett did!

I wonder how all of this will affect Stevens Point's recruiting this year?  April seems to be the big month for recruits to make decisions.  I'm sure SP's recruits all know Semling is interviewing for the Green Bay job... I assume competing schools are making sure they have the scoop.

I guess we'll see.

I'm sure Semling and Randall are still seeing recruits and bringing them in for visits.  UWSP is probably the easiest WIAC school to recruit to ... best fan support, highest attendance, best history/legacy.

I think a bigger issue about getting recruits will be that UWSP returns 4 senior starters plus the Tillema brothers and Jerrel Harris.  Immediate playing time is probably at a premium.

Am I the only one in the Minority that thinks that Jenkins will not play basketball next year, especially if has a shot at the NFL?  I think if he has a good year again in Football, that if he plays basketball he is taking away from his chances.  I know you can use the Joe Werner example, but that was a basketball player who was being brought in as an experiment.  Jenkins is a football player, and he is going to be expected to be in top Football shape come time if he's invited to the Combine or even if he's doing tryouts for teams.  Basketball is going to get in the way of that.

Again the cynical person in me thinks that the Randall hiring was orchestrated to put a successor on staff for a year or two behind Semling.

Certainly the prospect of going back-to-back is appealing but the window of opportunity to get a D1 job is so small that if it were there, and Semling wanted to do it, that he would be silly to turn it down.

Specific to a "big" raise ... all of that is a matter of perspective ... the reason Todd K is leaving is because of money.  I'm certain UWGB will pay better than UWSP!

Semling would be doubling his salary.  Link.  If you type in his name, you'll see what the salary was for last year.  Wisconsin State Journal published this a few weeks ago.  Work for the state, your salary is viewable to the public.

Don't forget he gets a sizeable amount of money for all the camps he runs.

Jenkins is arguably UWSP's best returning player on the basketball team, certainly their most athletic.  Losing him would be a huge blow.

If I'm Semling or Randall or whomever I would do whatever I could to accomodate Jenkins on the basketball team.

Having said that ... there are D1 college players who do nothing between January and March but prepare for the combine and football workouts.  For a D3 level player I would think he would have to be ultra-committed to get through the tiny wondow of opportunity.

Would be the same at UW-GB too though.  I think the report initially said that Salary would be approx $130,000 but with camps and other things factored in it would be near $200,000

I agree 100% with you on this.  Basketball side you need to make him happy, but you can't sacrifice what would be best for the team.  It is not unusual for D3 guys get invited to the Combine, and certainly have NFL teams invite you for a tryout.  I know there have been guys in the WIAC that have gotten invited in the past.  But speaking with my friend, he said that Jenkins is the best player (arguable of course) in the league.  He feels he'll get an invite.  Hard to put a basketball season and team on hold to chase a dream, but if you can make some money on it, that is tough to turn down as well.

Not trying to get Stevens Point people off the cloud they've been riding the past few weeks....maybe I do  :P ;D

But in all honesty, I don't think anybody can be or should be surprised if he doesn't play hoops next year.  I personally would be shocked if he did play, and if he does, good luck to them except two games all year.

I also know the site will go nuts when it comes time for him to join the team after football, and he doesn't because he has that opportunity in front of him, and I would hope they would wish him luck because I would do that as well.  Playing hoops or not, he's a great athlete and I'm sure a great young man.

There has been on average just under one Division III player invited to the combine the past 10 years. None of those invitees has been a punter. If that's his position with the best pro potential, I doubt the combine will be an issue.

Agreed combine won't be the issue but it is preparing for the collegiate pro-days.  I suspect if he performs well he MIGHT participate in UW's pro day which was in late March this year.

You can't stop playing basketball on March 15th and be ready for a pro-day on March 29th!

I do not follow UWSP football too much but he plays receiver too right?  Would he be good enough for that as well?

That's good news for Point.

When I said "highly qualified", I was referring to qualifications for the position, and appropriate salary for the level.  Obviously, Tom Izzo won't go to Green Bay any more than to Oregon.

Jenkins made 1st team all conference as a receiver.

He made the American Football Coaches Association's All-American team as a punter.

He's a stud receiver.  It looks like he led the league in receptions, touchdowns and receiving yards.  His receiving yards per game was 50 more than anyone else (121 to 73).

I'm not going to pretend I know what it takes to prepare for the NFL, the combine or pro days, but I'm sure it's not as hard for a punter as it is for running back, quarterback or receiver, for that matter.

Whatever happens, happens.  I'd love to see Jenkins in a basketball uniform.

Glad to hear Semling isn't on the final list of candidates for the GB job.  If he got it, I'd be mad, but I'd wish him the best of luck without hesitation.

I heard that Bo Ryan told Bothof that if they hire Gard that he (Ryan) would agree to switch the four for one (home and away) series between UWGB and UW to an even home and away series.

That scheduling switch is a huge incentive financially and probably the final nail in the coffin for Gard.

Of the five candidates I would rank them:

1. Gard
2. Grzesk
3. Harris
4. Moser
5. Wardle

I'm not sure how Harris, Moser and Wardle are on the list before Semling although I suspect it is partially due to Semling telling Bothof ... decide yes or no, don't twist me in the wind!
