Just watched Point win.  That's one on the road.  Nice 3 point shooting but ... I have two concerns early in the season.  First, we don't seem to make adjustments at half or during the flow of the game or even manage the clock well.  We allow the opponent to gain momentum instead of interrupting it with a TO?!  Second, presently we don't have a strong inside game, no real presence on defense or offense.  The lane is too open, no one steps in for the charge.  No one looks to pass inside.  I know it is early but let's not start any bad habits.

SP moves to 2-0 with an 85-77 victory over Richard Stockton.  SP was 9/12 from 3 in the first half and ended the game 13/20 (65%) but had a bundle of turnovers as Richard Stockton turned up the pressure big time in the second half... SP had a 53-34 lead in the second half and hung on... Richard Stockton pulled it to within 3 at least once under 7 minutes or so.

Dan Tillema fouled out with 1:44 left in the game and it still in doubt... with those two throws, RS pulled within 10 and would cut it to 6 twice in the last two minutes.

But SP managed to hit enough free throws to seal the victory  (27-34 for the game).

Tyler Tillema led the way with 23 on just 4/13 shooting (2/5 from 3 and 13/16 from the charity stripe) with 7 assists and 3 TO's.

Hass had a nice night with 20 (6/10 shooting, 5/8 from 3)

Dan Tillema with 15 (5/10 shooting 2/3 from deep, 3 assists, 5 TO's, at least 2 of those were charges as Danny fouled out, like I said).

Jordan Giordana had 13 on 4/5 shooting, all makes were from 3.

Very good points... but you have to remember, this is a very, very young team.  Semling tends to like to let teams play out of tough stretches instead of calling time outs... He's done that for years, though in many past years, he's had much more veteran clubs.

Brezinski had a tough game from what I saw and heard on the radio broadcast... but, with a few exceptions, he's always tended to be more of a facing the basket/jump shooter.  That isn't to say he can't score inside... heck, he had some very nice moves against the Badgers inside.

But, while this may seem strange, JB needs to be going against another big guy.  His post moves are sort of designed for it.  They don't do as well against a smaller, quicker player... I had the same sort of struggles earlier in my career until I figured out how to have a true power game against smaller players, but JB hasn't quite gotten there yet.

I think having Hoelzel and DSA on the coaching squad may help him with that a bit... but it just may not come.

Point certainly doesn't have a lot of depth on the inside, so if it isn't coming from Brezinski, then it's not likely to come from anywhere... but remember, he set the school record for field goal percentage last year.  While he may not shoot a lot, he's effective.

And as SP continues to hit from the outside, I think it will open up inside even more.

The defense will also come as the team meshes more and as the Freshmen get used to the system and the speed of the college game.

Per the Loras website, UWRF wins tonight at the Bethel tournament 70-60.  No details yet... but Loras just got pasted by #25 Wheaton earlier this week.

This team had a lot of promise coming into the year, and it's early... but it seems like all may not be well in western Wisconsin.

Greek Tragedy

This could be a long season, kind of like that 17-10 year after the 2nd national championship.  Its early, but there are so many new players, and young ones.  I think I'll have to temper my expectations for them this year.  I still have a lot of faith in Coach Semling and the staff, so I hope I'm wrong!

It could be a long season if we adopt the "live by the 3, die by the 3" mentality.  Winning teams, especially young ones, need to be more than one dimensional.

Just back from Bethel after watching RF play.  Without seeing the box score, the first half was pretty sloppy both ways.  Lots of turnovers and missed shots.  RF played well over the first 15 minutes of the second half to take the lead to the 15 point range, only to let Loras back into it in the end.  I think it might take them some time to adjust to the new additions, along with the loss of Koonkaew and Voeltz.  Manor was much of the offense in the second half, and Chris Palmer played well.  Not sure he missed a shot all game and I think he had about 15 points.  Fred Falcon was there so I'm sure he'll have more to add.

Welcome aboard, Falcons04... Here's a +k boost for your first post...

Falcon scoring:  Manor and Palmer each with 16. I think Palmer was 3/3 on threes, 5/6 on throws. He did not start, but probably played 18-20 minutes. White had 10,as did Guerin.Anderson had 3, Kimble had 9. Loras did not look like a very good team. RF  probably had 15 or so turnovers.

Saw Bethel play first half. They did not look very good, but most likely did beat Bethany Lutheran. Score at half:  Bethel 24, BL 17. No box score available yet.

With the exception of early first half tie the WARHAWKS led the entire game.  Leading by 13 at half, 30-17, the WARHAWKS increase the lead to a high of 24 points in the second half before the game ended with them up 19.  Chris Davis led all scorers with 16 points and Luke Knoble came off the bench to finish with a double-double 11 points, 10 rebounds.  The WARHAWKS held Concordia Chicago to 27% from the floor and dominated the boards 41-24 including 30 on the defensive glass.  Quardell Young led the team with 4 steals.  No one from Concordia scored in double figures.

Knoble is much improved over last year.  You could see him making strides during the season last year and he played well in the scrimmage against Concordia Wi.  Hopefully he can continue to make significant contributions during the remainder of the season.

The only stats that caught my attention from the box score are that Palmer's 16 came in only 14 minutes p.t., and for the second game, Falcons exceeded last year's average of 13 t.o.'s per game w/16.

I don't remember the exact stats, but we were kind of like that when we lost to Washington U. in the Sweet 16 several years ago.  Led by Pete Rortvedt, among others, we basically outscored everyone, living by the 3.  We died by the 3 that night, ironically, probably the only night the whole year we couldn't hit an outside shot.

UWS beats Finlandia 88-75 at home last night. Aalfs led the Jackets with 16 points 6-7 from the field, 3-3 from downtown. The Jackets had 5 guys in double figures, including freshman guard Adam Hjelter who had 11 points for the second game in a row. That's an encouraging sign that the young guys might be able to contribute a little bit this year. Brendan Bauer finished with 12 rebounds, which would be huge if he could be a force on the boards this year. I didn't get to watch the game but it seems like the guys played better yesterday than against Northland. UWS plays Edgewood today in their second game of the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic. As a side note, the athletics department has developed a new website, http://uwsyellowjackets.com/index.aspx?path=mbball&; that includes live stats for home games, which I know has been a source of frustration for those of you who follow your teams when they are on the road.
