Playing without the conference's leading scorer and rebounder the WARHAWKS still managed a convincing win 62-45 over Oshkosh in the Kolff Center.  Oshkosh started the game cold taking almost seven and half minutes to get their first points on a pair of free throws.  However the WARHAWKS were' not shooting much better and only led by six, 8-2. at that point.  The WARHAWKS would maintain a lead which reached a high of seven points twice for the rest of the half and were up 30-26 when it ended.  Oshkosh's cold start to the first half paled in comparison to the start of the second one as the WARHAWKS held the Titans scoreless for six and half minutes and made a 20-2 run to go up 50-28 at the eleven and half minute mark.  Oshkosh never got closer than fifteen after that.

The WARHAWKS finished the game shooting 49% from the floor including 7 of 15 from beyond the arc and had 19 assists on 26 made baskets.  The Titans shot 40%.  The WARHAWKS had a 10-6 advantage in points off of turnovers as their seven to's tied a season low.  The WARHAWKS also had the advantage in second chance points (7 to 5) and points in the paint (17-12).  Oshkosh's bench outscored the WARHAWKS 20-14.

Playing in his third game of the season Alex Edmunds led the WARHAWKS with a double-double 14 points, 10 rebounds.  Other WARHAWKS to reach double figures included Luke Noble with 12, Cody Odegaard with 11 and Eric Bryson and Lucas Burns with 10 apiece.  Bryson's 7 assists were a game high while Burns and Quardell Young each had 4.  Bryson and Young each had a game high 3 steals.

John Flanigan led the Titans with a double-double 11 points, 10 rebounds.  Dylan Wurtz also had 11 points.

Combined the two teams shot just 14 free throws on 23 fouls.  (WW: 3-5 and Oshkosh 7-9)  Flanigan shot six of the Titans' nine attempts.

Just reviewing the box score of the River Falls/Superior game last night it looks like the three point basket was the big difference.  Superior only made one more shot from the floor and made six fewer free throws.  But the Yellow Jackets went 10-23 from beyond the arc to just 3-12 by the Falcons.

Nice win by the Yellow Jackets.

The difference was in three-pointers: we finally made some. I just looked at the stats, and I noticed that for once we weren't shooting percentages in the single digits. We usually suck putting up needed threes and free-throws. I fully expected RF, like every other team we've faced, to use the last two minutes of the game to shell us with impossible threes, but they didn't. On the other hand, Superior went overboard-conservative passing up two two-on-one opportunities to score in about the same period of time. We had a five(?) point lead--maybe seven--when UWS put on the brakes. I think everyone in the stands could see doom looming (and there's nothing worse than looming doom). I believe this might have been Aalfs second buzzer-beating heroics this season. I, myself, would be happier with a sturdier lead throughout the game.

I don't know if I felt "doom" so to speak, but you could definitely feel the momentum changing, and very swiftly at that. Manor couldn't be stopped and he pretty much willed the Falcons back on his own from 9 down and 2-3 minutes left. We could have sealed the deal if we had made our freebies, but it's not the Superior way to make it easy on ourselves. Byrne missed 1, Davis missed at least 1, Bauer missed 1 and those all in the last minute to two minutes of the game. There were probably other missed FT's late that I can't recall because I was so busy screaming frustration into my hands. We did hit some huge 3's to counter some big shots RF was making late in the game. Kudos to Aalfs for stepping up and making plays once again. Credit has to go to the Jackets though for getting a big home W against a top league team. It's clear that Siverling is doing a remarkable job with this team so far, I'm hoping he can keep their focus up as school starts up again next week.

Jacket Fans--congrats on a great win. The stats appear to say that Superior played one of their best games. Is that the case?

Jacketpride: I'm glad to see Superior having some success. I listened to Barry Alvarez speak in La Crosse after his first season as Badger football coach, and he correctly stated that "There is nothing more fun in sports than a turnaround." True enough. I wish the 'jackets many wins when they aren't playing La Crosse. Good luck to them.

There's also nothing worse than seeing a once proud program crumble, like what is happening in both Men's and Women's basketball in Oshkosh this year. I'm very happy for Superior, I loved watching that Smith/Hill/Culy/Helland/Roeder team play a few years ago, I'm just also really disappointed in Oshkosh.

Greek Tragedy

Though I'm surprised Oshkosh is winless in the conference season, I didn't think they'd be any better than their 5-11 record from a year ago.  Wojahn, Wittwer, Washington and Kellner are all gone for various reasons.  That's four of your top 6 guys with only Flanigan and Schrimpf back from that group.

Couple of points made by Pointer coach in post game inter view:  RF was tougher  than Point  when operating their offense against Point traps and against Point defense generally.  Point, event tho they had a 3 point lead at half, seemed disappointed at half in their first half performance and had their  heads down during the break, said the coach.

Huge win for the Falcons at Quandt! That place is good for 10-15 points for UWSP on a nightly basis, visiting teams just don't win there.

Congrats on River Falls on their big win at Quandt.  Tough loss for Point, but I have faith they'll bounce back.
