I was taking a look at the box score this morning for the RF/WW game. I was interested to see the score tied at 53 with 4:04 left. then both teams failed to score until Davis hit that shot with five seconds left. That four-minute dry spell to end the game must have drove fans and coaches nuts.

It drove me nuts listening on the radio.  I was thinking here we go Superior all over again.

Missed free throws (on both sides) were obviously an issue but the game changer was three point baskets.  WW: 6, RF: 3

Amazing to me that there was a 4 minute dry spell.  Hardly noticed it.   No scoring but amazing intensity and drama.  I agree with Fredfalcon that Pat Bauchault  did a great job of officiating a very difficult game.  WW a very deserving champion.  All I ever hear around here is that Pat Miller just gets all the talent.  Guess what.  Any team that plays defense with that kind of intensity has a coach that deserves some credit.  The guy can coach and gets my vote for COY.

I had to check the box score as well, because it didn't seem like 4 minutes went by without a score.  There were plenty of ft's and close shots, so it must have just seemed like they were scoring.

Greek Tragedy

The problem with Point and River Falls is because one of them could end the regular season with 3 straight losses.  Of course if Superior tops Point and then gets by River Falls, both will have 3 straight losses.  That's tough psychologically.  Point has it real tough with Tillema out, taking on a tough Superior team, possibly another rematch with River Falls and then, hopefully, a trip to Whitewater.   It's going to be a tough week.

A week ago things looked pretty impossible, especially after the loss to Superior. Now, the Warhawks won the title. There is a lot more to accomplish this year on the court, but I simply could not believe it when I read the Sunday morning paper and saw the results!

Since the inception of the conference tournament only one team not seeded either first or second has won it.  Oshkosh was a 4 seed in the 2002-03 season and won the tournament.  Since that time the top seeded team has won five times and the second seeded team three times.

The #4 seed has actually won twice... Eau Claire won it in the "year of the upset," 2001.

The #4 seed has appeared in the final three times... the two previous times mentioned and in 2005 when the Warhawks got there.

The #3 seed has never appeared in the final and since they went to the 6 team format, the 1 and 2 have met in the final each year.

Oops, thanks for the correction.  The conference website doesn't start listing it as a separate category until the 2002-03 season and I failed (DOH!) to check before that.

Any word on Tyler Tillema's status for the conference tourney, let alone the rest of the post season, if they get a bid?

Nothing recent or firm... but he tweeted right before the Eau Claire game that he hoped to be back this week.

The most recent regional rankings are out.  In the West:

Whitewater
Whitworth
River Falls
Stevens Point
CMS
St. Thomas
Gustavus Adolphus
Puget Sound
Whitman

I think all three WIAC teams are safe, though Point would be skating on thin ice if they lose
tonight.  CMS already lost this week prior to their conference tourney.  If Whitewater or River  Falls wins the tourney and even if Whitworth goes down, at worst, Point is 3rd to get to the Pool C table.  I don't see CMS, St. Thomas or GAC jumping the Pointers with their own conference tourney losses.

Greek Tragedy

The Monroe native nearly led UW-Platteville into overtime when he was fouled attempting a 3 pointer with 12 seconds to go. He made two of three free throws to cut an Eagles lead to one. After an alert foul with 10 seconds to go, the Eagles missed the front end of a 1-in-1.

Junior Rob Stallion came down with the rebound and the Pioneers were unable to get off a shot at a game-winning basket.

Sounds like a crazy end to the La Crosse v Platteville game.  Minor upset as the visitors top the Pioneers.

Point also wins.

Platteville dug too deep of a hole in the first half that took a lot of energy to get out of.

I would like to compliment them for the video broadcast of the game.  With a few exceptions it was pretty good.  There were some buffering issues in the second half but they weren't anywhere near as bad as the majority of web streams that I've watched this year.  The two students announcing were another thing but they're students learning the art so it's pretty much expected.  Overall it was a pretty decent broadcast.

I opted to see Marquette vs. Rutgers but the LAX-PLATT play-by-play was fascinating.  An interesting side note to Platteville's season:  UWP's record was W2-L10 when Brett Stangel took 14 or more shots; when Stangel took 13 or fewer shots, the team was W12-L2.  I wondered all season what justified Stangel's playing time (34.8 minutes per game) and hope it was a case of being the best shooting guard option as opposed to being a senior or related to the assistant coach.

How is Chas Cross?  It seemed like he was an up and coming star last year... but I don't know that we really saw that this year.  I know he was injured for a good portion of the year and I can only assume that this held him back this season.

Strictly an observation:  slightly less mobile, not as aggressive.  I too assume the injury held him back.
