UW-Oshkosh conducted phone interviews with 7 candidates last week. Next phase will be to bring some of those candidates on campus. Four of the candidates are head coaches with 3 currently at the collegiate level. The other 3 are assistants in college.

Here's your list of names:  http://hoopdirt.com/blog/a8ad48ac/daily-dirt-6-11-12/

Tim Gaubatz (assistant UW-Oshkosh), Aaron Aanonsen (head coach Lakeland College), Pat Juckem (head coach Coe College), Lee Rabas (head coach UW-Fox Valley), Lou Chapman (assistant coach UW-Whitewater), Dave Scultz (head coach Waukesha West HS), and Dan Weisse (assistant coach Minnesota State Moorhead).

A nice list of candidates but I am surprised there are not more high profile candidates applying for this job.  The timing sucks and the search circumstances leave a lot to be desired but in my opinion this program has the most potential after UWW and UWSP.

I was just thinking, it's about time for Aanonsen to move on, based on Lakeland's coaching history. I was spending some time this weekend creating pages going back (eventually) to 2002-03 for each team and was reminded of the turnover at Lakeland:

2011-12    Aaron Aanonsen    21-7    .750
2010-11    Aaron Aanonsen    15-11    .577
2009-10    Aaron Aanonsen    12-14    .462
2008-09    Aaron Aanonsen    10-15    .400
2007-08    Kyle Brumett    17-11    .607
2006-07    Kyle Brumett    16-11    .593
2005-06    Gary Grzesk    21-6    .778
2004-05    Gary Grzesk    14-12    .538
2003-04    Gary Grzesk    16-13    .552
2002-03    Paul Combs    19-8    .704
2001-02    Paul Combs    16-10    .615
2000-01    Paul Combs    15-12    .556
1999-00    Paul Combs    10-15    .400
1998-99    Brian Miller    6-19    .240
1997-98    Brian Miller    7-18    .280
1996-97    Brian Miller    7-18    .280
1995-96    Brian Miller    18-8    .692
1994-95    Brian Miller    21-6    .778

Greek Tragedy

As a Muskie alumnus, I've known the turnover rate of coaches at Lakeland for sometime now.  I'm not going to post my opinion on things there, but it's not a coincidence that a lot of coaches don't last long there, and it has nothing to do with their performance.  Well, ok, maybe it does (they do well and then move on!).  It's not surprising that the people running things have a hard time keeping good coaches.  The college does not promote itself to the local city either.  I think most of the people in Sheboygan barely are aware that Lakeland exists (and if they do, they don't care).  For those who don't know anything about Lakeland College, it's listed IN Sheboygan, but is actually about 15 minutes outside of town located amongst the cornfields.  Basketball is not the only sport that has a hard time keeping coaches.

Wissports.net has an article titled "WHITEWATER picks up talented newcomer."  I'm not a subscriber so I have no idea who they are talking about.  If someone here is a subscriber and wouldn't mind checking the article and telling me who that is I would appreciate it.

Miles Chamberlin formerly from Madison Memorial is currently Minnesota Mankato.  He is transferring to UWW.

We need to subscribe BW!  I see those articles all the time and can't click thru to get the story!

I would think Chamberlain should be an instant impact player for WW.  Nice pick-up for them.

For anyone on the fence about a wissports subscription, I would say it's definitely worth it.  Mark Miller does a great job providing updates on HS players.  For a one-sport annual subscription I think it was only $30.

Even without the subscription, you can follow him on twitter to get quick updates.

I recall watching him play in the state tournament and thinking that he could definitely play in our league.

Seeing Aanonsen's teams first hand I think he could do well but Juckem is a strong candidate considering his team won the IIAC this past season and while Reed's record isn't super impressive he could bring some unique energy and perspective from the SCIAC. Much better crop than I thought there would be especially after Adrian went to Otterbein.

I have a feeling that the obvious choice may not be the actual choice.  The decision making by the administration throughout this search has been strange and frankly a bit perplexing.

If it was me, I'd pick Juckem.

Any word on Superior.  I'm still picking Eric Gardow.
