Ooh. New bleachers and new playing floor paint job at the Kolf Sports Center. Looks nice.

And the cool thing is you'll always be able to read the words on the bleachers since you won't have all those people sitting there like in other gyms. (Kidding, kidding.)

Seriously, it does look really good. Major improvement.

They look structurally sound and don't appear to have huge gaping holes in the upper sections of the bleachers! Definitely an improvement!
The renovated Kolf has its debut sporting event on Wednesday – a volleyball match against Point.

I've been up there several times checking on the progress. All of the senses get a workout. It's definitely got that distinctive new-gym smell. Perhaps the job fair being held in there tomorrow will damped the aroma. Seeing it gutted made me appreciate how huge (and echoey) that field house is.

Did they do anything to address the cavernous space, as best you can tell?

I know some places, like Gus Young at Gustavus Adolphus, they have a large field house... but they basically split it in half and drop a tarp down.

That won't work at Oshkosh based on where the bleachers have been historically... but they theoretically could put some sort of artificial background behind one or both baskets to at least give the appearance of closing it in...

Are you sure? Usually volleyball plays in their own gym on the lower level and not in the main fieldhouse. Maybe they are playing upstairs for the special occasion or something and I'm not aware of it.

When my daughter played volleyball at Oshkosh they did occassionally play in the upstairs gym though it was usually during multiteam events that were being played over a couple of days.

Chad Mathwig (6-6) has transferred from Oshkosh to Milwaukee. He averaged 8.8 ppg and 6.0 rpg at Oshkosh.  This is a big loss for Oshkosh, he would have been a big part of their team for the upcoming years.
Just to be clear, Mathwig is reportedly attending UW Milwaukee for school only and is not playing basketball.

No, not sure. But I don't think I've ever been to a conference match downstairs, and I've been to almost all of them over the past seven years or so. They're always in the field house, playing lengthwise on the basketball court (baseline to baseline, not sideline to sideline). The men's club team plays downstairs, and the women practice there too.

Tournaments are typically held upstairs and downstairs, depending on the size of the event. They've also done tourneys with three courts upstairs using Sport Court for the third court in the back of the field house.

Edit: Looking at the Twitter pic, you can see the volleyball lines in the center of the court.

I didn't get a sense of that, but there were always temporary bleachers for volleyball and basketball. Sometimes they were pulled out for seating, sometimes merely as a barrier. Sometimes on both baselines, sometimes just the far side.

It's hard to believe that they'd pump $1.4 million into the project and not have something similar to (preferably better than) those rolling banks of seating. I only saw the cavernous version of the remodel and a few times with the main seating sections down.

Yes, sorry cubs...I should have been more clear.

From what era? Bringing in 8 new freshmen after only losing 3 seniors (and on a roster that had 14) is a recipe for... something.  Unless they know/knew that others were quitting (that typically doesn't happen after a national championship though!)

If they abide by the NCAA tournament rule that you can only dress 15 (UWSP does this even though it isn't mandated for regular season games), then there will be 4 players without a jersey each game. Maybe rotating would work... but I have to wonder how long the guys rotating will be ok with that.

Carrying 19 when redshirting was allowed is one thing... or when you play a JV schedule and can get the guys that are 10+ on the depth chart some JV PT... but when you've only got a varsity squad, it can be very difficult.
