Wow. Ben Gresmer had a huge game. Anyone like fred falcon wanna fill us in. Things to come or one game wonder? No Taylor Peterson again for River Falls.

Interesting to see Nickel and Wurtz, usual starters, coming off the bench, according to boxscore.  Ummmm...

While I'm on the subject, very disappointed in the titans effort tonight.  Stout is a very good team, but how bad is Oshkosh?  They were down 32 at one time.

As for Stout, Hortman as lead the team in scoring in the last three conference games (Oman had 18 tonight as well) and in shooting in two of those three.  Thoughts, Stout faithful?

Harris had a modest 9 and 5 for Whitewater.  He lead the team in 3-pt attempts, but was 3rd in FGA.

I didn't get a chance to see the Stout vs. Oshkosh game, but from what I hear the Blue Devils shot great, but there didn't seem to be a lot of defensive effort by the Titans. Im happy to see Stout bounce back after a rough one at Point.

As for Hortman, he is a very athletic and talented player. His biggest downside is he gets most of his shots on his own terms. When he is on the floor the rest of the guys "are just there" sort of hanging out waiting to see what Hortman will do. Coach Andrist has done a good job in my opinion handling his minutes on a game to game basis. If he is shooting well you gotta keep him on the floor cause he is atheltic and tough to stop, but if his shot is off, he has to come off the floor or he might shoot you out of the game. Oman tries a little harder to get shots out of the offense and that doesnt always work in his favor to score 20 a night. Hortman averages 20 min a game (6th most on the team) and has shot 148 times (second most on the team) and at a disappointing 37.2%. I just hope he keeps shooting well like the last few games and keeps getting a little better at moving within the offense.

Sup sticks it UWW today.

D'oh!

Superior wins 69-66

I can't remember Superior ever shooting as well as they did today...

Sup shoots 52% and holds Whitewater to 41%.

Superior's turnovers almost lost it for them, but Whitewater couldn't capitalize.

Big Boy Byrne had a great game today, for 16 points (12 in the second half) and 5 boards on 7/8 shooting from the field. Whitewater couldn't do much but try to deny him the ball... when he got it inside, he was going to score, but they did get a few steals.

I don't think that Superior is quite using Byrne as well as they could. I think back to how Platteville used to run sets to isolate inside for Jeff Skemp. They reversed the ball and allowed him to seal, as opposed to simply making him work to get open all of the time.

Curt Hanson has moved back to Deerfield, IL not far from me and he's coaching high school basketball here. I saw them play this morning while my kids were at their swim lessons... and considerably smaller inside players were getting open with these types of sets. It's VERY hard to guard if you've got a team who can reverse the ball quickly, and Byrne, not being the most nimble bloke in the world, could definitely benefit from this.  Just don't do it against Stevens Point  :D

Agreed but they also need their guards to figure out how to pass the ball in the post, something they couldn't do at all against UWO.

The box score is accurate, not sure why they didn't start but I have guess it had something to do with their intensity in practice or could possibly have been disciplinary.

Oshkosh really lacks for talent. Although this team will end up with a better record but I think if you matched them up against last year's team that the 2011-2012 version of the Titans would win that ball game. I think the coaching change has no doubt made a difference but it is going to be a long tough road for Coach Juckem to hoe to be even in the top half of the conference.

I attended the game in Point yesterday.  My impressions...Point only played well for about the first 4 minutes of the game.

After watching Heuer get man handled quite a bit in St Thomas, it was a huge change yesterday.  He was physical and if a rebound was anywhere around his area, he got it.  Point really needed to get him the ball down low more.  He had size on anyone guarding him in the post, most of the time it was Morrissey.  I had quite a bit of conversation with my brother during the game on how I'm surprised Heuer hasn't put up more outside shots this year.  I know Point needs him down low but he was known as a good shooter when we was recruited out of Wisconsin Rapids.  I think him in a pick and pop situation would put him in good spots to get open looks around the elbow and extended areas.

Ritchay and Hass hit some huge shots.  McGann played some extremely solid minutes.  He played very good defense, played physical for his size and took advantage of his opportunies down low.  He is going to be a good player for Point.  I'm going off memory so I may be wrong but I don't think Studer got any action.  That surprises me as I think he would match up defensively with La Crosse's quicker big buys.  Richard only played a couple minutes, when he was in, he didn't have any breakdowns offensively or defensively so I don't know why he didn't get back in the game either.

DeVon Jackson plays all out every second with reckless abandon.  That's admirable and I like him being a Pointer because of his athleticism, but he plays dumb.  He'll make atleast 2 stupid fouls a game which can cost you.  Yesterday he fouled Heiden on a 3, which Heiden made.  I saw the play happen plain as day as it was right in front of me.  Jackson was a step behind Heiden off a screen and if he would have just closed out would have been fine....instead he jumps up and tries to block the 3 attempt and jumps straight into Heiden's chest.  With that said, I really like him as a player, that play just rubbed me the wrong way.

Lastly, free throw shooting almost cost Point.  With 5 80+ percent free throw shooters on the floor inside the minute and a half mark, Point missed the front end of 3 straight bonus attempts.  La Crosse got a steal with about 50 seconds left or so that gave them a chance to take the lead, Point ended up getting a huge stop and Hass got fouled on the rebound...he went to the line for double bonus and finally hit both for Point.  This game easily could have gone the other direction so Point really needs to take advantage of their superior free throw shooting in the future, especially in road games.

tomt - would Tillema be eligible to apply for a medical redshirt or has he played too many games to date?

fredfalcon

thrunt01--things to come w/ BG? Hope so, but even with 18 yesterday he's averaging 3.1 ppg. Got his second start vs EC. Still don't know why Taylor P. has now missed 2 straight, unless sick.

Falcons need to get over poor starts:  down 14-0 to Lax, then 10-0 to EC.

Without looking it up and being exact with my answer, I'm almost positive he's played in too many games to apply for a medical redshirt.  Maybe I am just optimistic, but I don't think he will be out much longer.  I saw him walking around and dribbling yesterday during pregame and he wasn't favoring his ankle at all.  He was in very good spirits and very vocal on the bench as well.  He didn't have the look or body language of someone who wasn't going to be back in the lineup this year.  I could be reading too much into my observations though.

My understanding is that the cutoff is nine games. I've seen some different estimates but the standard, as far as I know, is one-third of the scheduled games, rounded up. So a third of 25 is 8-1/3, and round up to nine.

For football, that would make it four.

Thanks for the clarifications Pat....Tillema stands at 9 games played this season.

So the question for me is this... 9 is the cutoff... But is it the cutoff for the"good" or the "bad?" In other words, has he already played too many games, or would the next game put them over the top?

One more question that comes to my mind... Does the number change if a team goes deep in the tournament? So, say, 2 conference tournament games and three NCAA games makes 30... So 1/3 would be 10?

I would think the eligibility would have already been determined.  You aren't going to have, say Tillema, play a 10th game, and then sit him out the rest of the year, hoping you go far into the tourney so you can get another year out of him.

My take on Lax at Point:  Three pointers were the difference.  I don't have statistics handy, but Point seemed to take more and make a higher percentage.  In general, La Crosse didn't shoot well Saturday afternoon.  But Point has a strong team and earned the win.
