RF 92-77 over Jackets. Career nights for Zach Peterson (26) and U.T. Udo (22). Smith had 13.

Peterson (20), Davis (18), Brooks (19) led Superior. Don't have rebound totals so there may be a double/double in there somewhere.

MESSAGE TO RECRUITS:  IN DOUBT? ENROLL AT STOUT. DON'T CARE? GO TO EAU CLAIRE. AT A LOSS? TRY LACROSSE. FEELIN' OUTTA JOINT? YOUR PLACE IS POINT. DON'T LIKE THE REST? DO WHAT'S BEST!

GOT BALLS? PLAY FOR THE FALLS!

Corrections/additions:  Udo had 23 and 10 rbds., Smith, 14.

Z. Peterson was 8/8 from the line and has missed only 3 free throws all season.

Superior loses to River Falls 77-92 after a big win over WW last game. Peterson and Udo with a big game for the Falcons and Brooks, Peterson, and Davis score just about all the points for the Yellowjackets.

Point finishes Platteville 65-60. Cross with another big game with 21 and 9. Point gets another great shooting night from Hass going 7-9 (5-6 from 3) for 21 points. Heuer chips in 13 pts and 8 boards.

WW takes care of Oshkosh 68-50. No one for Osh very impressive. Wise gets 14 pts and Nickel goes 1-7 with another off shooting night. The Warhawks come with a balanced attack. All players that took a shot scored at least 7 and no more than 11. Harris just misses back to back double doubles with 10 pts and 9 rebounds.

Stout holds off Lax 63-55. The Eagles went somewhat balanced scoring with no one being very impressive. Shot a rough 6-21 (28%) from deep. Hortman goes off for the Blue Devils with 21 points (5-8 downtown) and 13 boards, including 3 big offensive rebounds at the end of the game. Oman goes 3-3 from 3 for 17 points.

I am going to attempt to give mid-season POY, COY, All-Conference, and Honorable Mention. Might be rough as a lot of players are very close in stats and I havent got to see guys play a lot. Here goes nothing..........

POY- Chas Cross- Platt
COY- Semling- SP

All-Conference

Chas Cross- Platt
Jeff Heiden- LC
Trevor Hass- SP
Zach Peterson- RF
Luke Knoble- WW
Alex Oman- ST
Jordan Peterson- EC
Bronson Byrne- SUP
Luke Tweed- LC
Joe Ritchay- SP

Honorable Mention

KJ Evans- WW
Chris Hortman- ST
Erik Olson- ST
Cory Nickel- OSH
Jarrod Peterson- SUP

I feel like there could be a dozen guys that make honorable mention right now, but won't list them all. I dont know what Tillemas status is for a return and he has only played in 3 conference games I believe (might be off on that).

The list is in no particular order

No Quardell Young??

I can't give player of the year to a guy on a team only .500 in conference, with that said, I was trying to think of a better solution and couldn't come up with one.  So, maybe Cross it is.

And, being a Pointer fan so this may be homerish, but I think Ryf and Heuer deserve some recognition.  If Heuer has a good second half he should be on the All Conference squad and if Ryf continues his play he should get some Honorable Mention recognition.  Ryf was the main reason in my mind why Point beat Whitewater the first go round.

BW or Voice-

Any reason why Knoble saw limited action tonight (17 minutes)?

I don't have any reason except to say with OSH's offensive scheme WW went to a smaller, quicker lineup for mainly defensive purposes. Knoble's stats last night: 9 points (4 of 6 from the field)

BTW... Darnel Harris played really well last night.  9 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists

Young's WIAC ranks:

-9th in the WIAC in scoring
-2nd in assists
-1st in steals
-3rd in assists/turnover ratio

I would take Evans out and put in Young

Wasn't going to mention this, but with B. Byrne listed as all conference, I have to say that his performance last night vs. RF was "way below par." That's a politically correct phrase.

A team's rank in the conference, or its number of wins, does not affect my notion of whether or not he should be all conference. In fact, it could be argued that high performance on a second tier team is more unusual than the other way around.

Quardell Young is an all around player, not a specialist. That puts him in a select category, and to me, makes him more likely to be all conference.

Luke Knoble's layup gave the WARHAWKS the first score of the game and other than a 2-2 tie a lead they would hold the rest of the night.  Eric Bryson's basket with six minutes remaining in the half gave the WARHAWKS their first double digit lead 28-17.   The Titans twice reduce the lead to single digits but Quardell Young's three-pointer at the buzzer pushed it back into double figures 35-25 when the half ended.  Young's 11 points led the WARHAWKS, who shot 58% from the floor, in scoring.   Sean Wise led the Titans with 14 points.  The Titans scored first in the second stanza and for the most part kept their deficit in single digits for the first eleven minutes until Darnell Harris's three-pointer gave the WARHAWKS a double digit 51-41 lead that would never be less than twelve points afterward.

The WARHAWKS finished the game shooting 50% from the floor to 40% for the Titans.  A size advantage and out rebounding the Titans 34-26 helped the WARHAWKS to a 30-12 advantage off points in the paint and the bench out scored the Titans 22-13.

Young's 11 points led the team while Bryson and Harris each added 10 points.  Harris's 9 rebounds were a game high as were Young's 5 assists.

Wise was injured in the second half and had to be assisted off the floor.  His 14 points led the Titans.

Its the old tip of the cap/wag of the finger here for Cross. Tip of the cap for the near 20-10 night, wag of the finger for nearly giving up a double-double to Heuer.

In a battle of the "Ginger Giants" (my son coined that title), Point prevails over Platteville 65-60. P-ville was red hot from beyond the arc, including Cross who had their first trey of their seven for the game and 11 of the Pioneer's first 14 points. He was then was shut out the rest of the half, but the Pio's were 5-7 in the first stanza. Point had seven TO's in the first half, many unforced, leading to a 9-0 advantage for Platteville. It was a back & forth game with neither team gaining a lead of more than 4 points in the 1st half, with 13 lead changes. The way Cross was able to penetrate to the basket early I thought Point and Heuer were in for a long night. Defense tightened up on him though and he was not able to get many good looks in the rest of the half. Trevor Hass carried the team in the first half, hitting 4-5 from downtown and 14 overall.

The second half was Heuer's turn to carry the team, scoring nine, including his only triple of the night, which led Point back from a 5 point deficit, Platteville's largest lead of the game. Hass was kept in check by Rob Stallion's defense, but late in the second half he switched over to Joe Ritchay and Trevor hit another hot streak, scoring all seven of his second half points in the last seven minutes of the game. A steal and breakaway basket by Hass was followed by back-to-back three pointers by Ritchay and Hass, giving Point the game's largest lead at 6 points with three minutes to go. Platteville fought back to within one, but FT's by Austin Ryf (4-4) and Ritchay (2-2) sealed the win.

Platteville had a big height advantage throughout most of the game, but only outrebounded Point by three. Point turned up the defense in the second half, forcing 8 turnovers, giving them an 11-0 point advantage, while only committing three themselves. Platteville was allowed to hand check throughout the game, slowing the Pointer's ability to penetrate to the basket, evidenced by the 28-14 deficit in the paint. Refereeing was suspect, 'nuff said on that.

Hass (21 pts 5-6 treys) and Ryf (11 pts - 9 assists) had outstanding games, Heuer had a very good night with 13 points, 8 reb and 3 blocks. Ritchay didn't have one of his better nights, but still had 9 pts & 7 boards. Alex Richards had a very good game off the bench, but DeVon Jackson had another rough outing.

Both teams shot well for the game from the floor (especially from beyond the arc), but Point's advantage from the FT line (15-16 versus 9-15) was basically the difference in the game. Cross led the Pioneers with 21 pts and 9 rebounds, with Brad Reinke and Jim Stocki adding 11 and 10 respectively.

Point finishes the first half of the season at 8-0 with a 2 game lead over Whitewater and Stout. A road game at River Falls is followed by a home game against the Warhawks next Wednesday, and WW is looking to stop a five game skid to the Pointers. Road trips to Platteville, La Crosse and Stout follow in the second half of the season and it would be great if Tyler Tillema is able to suit up and play for those important games.

Yea I saw Heuer is doing pretty solid overall and really helping Point out, but like I had said I havent got to see everyone play yet and thos I have seen, most have only been one or 2 games. Young is impressive and I could see him being All-Conference if he continues his play, but from past experiences to be named as a Sophomore your team must do very well and you have to be OUTSTANDING. There are not 10 "shoe ins" for all-conference, in my mind, halfway through the WIAC season.

Greek Tragedy

Impressed with Stout's win over La Crosse. I lost a little faith in them when they were upset by a pretty bad Loras team and then forgot to show up at Quandt last week. I thought they might slip up in their "trap" game in Oshkosh, but they spanked the Titans at Kolf. If they could sneak one out in Whitewater, that would be quite a feat. A tough four game stretch almost complete...Point, Oshkosh, La Crosse and Whitewater.
