Starting up a new part of my blog, and yes I know I've been five months away from it. It's called Story Time with Terry, where I share an interesting story from my hooping days. It will be every Tuesday all year round.

I'm also encouraging any other DIII players, coaches, spectators, announcers, whoever who has their own interesting, unique, uplifting, funny story to share me that story so these story times are not always just about me. It's time to show people what DIII is really all about.

Interesting... Don't recall seeing this before on here.

But the Darnell Harris era has ended at UW Whitewater.

Quote
Darnell Harris, a 6-foot-8 transfer from Wisconsin-Whitewater who connected on 55 three-pointers for the Division III power as a freshman. Harris is also from LaJolla Prep in Milwaukee, Wisc., the same high school that produced Elgin Cook, NWF State's 2012-13 All-American forward who will suit up for the University of Oregon this season.

Is it just me... or are things really changing around the WIAC? I don't remember this number of transfers OUT in the past decade and a half as we've seen in the last 3 or 4 years...

UWW/WIAC FANS:

Help pls---couple of questions

1. If Harris is as good as he evidently seems to think he is, how did he end up at D3 UWW in the 1st place?
2. Did UWW/WIAC fans expect Harris back in Whitewater again this coming season, or was it pretty much of a given that he would be elsewhere in 2013-14?

Harris obviously has bigger things in mind. However, in an elimination game in the D3 playoffs this year, he went a combined 3 for 12, including 2 for 7 on threes and 5 rebounds. For the year, he averaged 11.4 ppg and 5.9 rpg. If he intends to use a year at a junior college as a springboard to playing at a mid to high D1 level, it appears he will have to step things up a bit.

1. I don't know the whole story of how Darnell ended up in WHITEWATER though I know there were some issues at the prep school he attended.  They weren't his issues but rather issues involving the school.  Lou Chapman, assistant coach, had maintained a relationship with Darnell and was instrumental in his recruitment.

2.  There was always the possibility that Harris would leave after the first year.  Most of us knew that.  However his adjustment at WHITEWATER had been going very well academically, socially as well as athleticially and he seemed to like it here.  So some of us were hoping that things might change and he'd decide to stay.  Unfortunately for us other influences and his dream of playing D1 ball cause him to take a different path.  It's too bad he would have done really well here.

In response to J Gleich - it is not just you, transfers abound in this league.  It is fast becoming more D2 / D1 in "mindset" compared to the old days of D3.  Back in my day ( a long ways back), we didn't take transfers or even JUCO players.  As a player, your internal competition came from the older players and those recruited behind you.

Maybe there is more pressure on these head coaches to win - look at what Hortman did last year at Stout as basically a 1 year guy.  No way that team has that level of success without him.  Then they take another 1 year guy in Whitehead.  UWW took a one year guy in Lindfors but it didn't work out.

Does Point win the league last year w/out Heuer and Haas, both transfers?

Bottom line, future WIAC players and their parents have to be very aware of this - you can be a "developing" player within a WIAC program and upon approaching your junior and senior seasons, the team brings in a D2 transfer at your position from the neighboring Minnesota league and your anticipated playing time could vanish.

badgerwarhawk

The possiblility of vanishing playing time has always been a reality in the WIAC and any other league or level for that matter.  That's the thing about college athletics.  You're recruited and the coach who recruited you almost immediately starts looking for a better player.  That isn't anything new.

I posted this about Darnell Harris on the CCIW board after he torched IWU in late-November...

----------
Darnell Harris is an interesting story.  Left his H.S. in Milwaukee after his JR year to attend prep school in Texas, where he committed to D1 Florida International...but ended up at prep school in LaJolla, CA where he committed to D1 Cleveland State...but never made it there and is now a FR at D3 UW-Whitewater.  Quite a path!

Another of Jenkins' players, Hamilton standout Darnell Harris, will spend his senior year at Christian Life Center Academy in Humble, Texas. The 6-foot-8 Harris averaged 13.7 points and shot better than 40% from three-point range.

Jenkins said Harris is considering Florida International and Marquette, with Providence, Oklahoma State and Tulsa also interested.

Hamilton (Milwaukee, Wis.) might have fielded one of the nation's top 25 basketball teams during the upcoming season – that is until two of its premier players transferred to out-of-state prep schools.

Veteran coach Tom Diener told MaxPreps that 6-foot-8 senior Darnell Harris is at Christian Life Center (Humble, Texas), while 5-8 senior point guard Charles Lee is attending Huntington Prep (Huntington, W.Va.).

Both would have been three-year starters. Last year they helped Hamilton post a 20-4 record, win the Milwaukee City Conference and reach the Division I state quarterfinals.

Harris, a slender 185-pounder, averaged 13.5 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists and shot 45 percent from 3-point range. Lee averaged 12.5 points, 5.2 assists and 4.0 rebounds.

"Darnell has tremendous perimeter game skills: shooting, passing, pivoting," Diener said. "He can really shoot the three. As he gains strength he will become one of the premier recruits in the country. I think you will see him in the NBA some day.

Rather than hold out hope of an offer from Marquette, Darnell Harris committed to Florida International on Wednesday.

Darnell Harris, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound forward from La Jolla Prep (Calif.), has verbally committed to Cleveland State, according to his head coach, Bobby Bossman.

Looks like one of many new paths goes from Milwaukee Hamilton HS for 3 years, (almost) to Christian Life Center Academy Prep in Humble TX, but (really) to LaJolla Prep School in CA, then (almost) to Florida International but (again) not really, and instead (almost) to Cleveland State, but (again not really), but instead (really) to D3 Wis-Whitewater for just one year, and now onto Northwest Florida JUNIOR College, followed by............its anybody's guess!   :(

Ah, Coach Diener, please step into the workshop. It appears you have a few loose screws that need tightening.  :o

Really just kinda boggles the mind.  ::)

Nick krill should be considered one of the best pointers of all time he was best defender I've seen in long time.  Guy never took a play off.  I can only imagine how tough he is in street ball.

Anyone see the scathing article in last weeks Journal-Sentinel about UWO athletics/baseball/stadium renovation project?  Could this place be as functionally challenged as it appears?

With regards to the basketball program I have heard that Juckem and Lewis have been everywhere this summer.  I saw both at NY2LA tournament at Homestead last week.

All transfers are not created equally though...

Look at the following list of guys who have transferred in TO Point:

Clayton Heuer - had 2 years
Dan Tillema - had 3 years
Trevor Hass - had 3 years
Kyle Grusczynski - had 3 years
Me - had 4 years

The high-profile guys who have transferred out have all had 2 or fewer years left. It just seems odd to be that guys would come to a school and have some success... and decide that the school's just not high profile enough (or whatever the case may be).
