From purple and gold to purple and white.  According to the Stevens Point Journal, the Warhawks have hired former UWSP standout, Nick Bennett.  He will replace Lou Chapman who is now at Loyola-Chicago.

I talked to Nick on Sunday on his way down to WW and he's really excited about the opportunity.

I'm a bit biased, but I think Whitewater got a good one here.

Monumental hire for war hawks that may give them an edge now on point.  Was hoping point would find a way to get him on board but didn't happen.

From the king of overreaction...

Bennett is a great hire no doubt, but let's not act like Point isn't in a great position moving forward.  Not to mention, if it works out for him in Whitewater and it turns out that Point has an opportunity for him in the future, I'd be pretty sure with his lineage at UWSP that they could get him back in a heartbeat.

Probably a good hire because Miller has traditionally made good hires.  But I'm not sure it's "monumental."  That seems sort of grandiose.  I guess we'll see.  I'm hoping he broadens our recruiting base.

ShineTime tends to be a bit exaggerated in his descriptions... but I can't remember an assistant hire with Nick's credentials, except for maybe Lance Randall. There seems to be a bit more of a buzz about this than usual.

Several D3 teams scrimmaged today at Just A Game fieldhouse and I got a chance to attend. Saw UWO, UWSup, UWSP, UWW and UWL in some capacity. Some schools went split squads for the day making it tough to judge progress. I did see Tyler Tillema play for UWSP. UWW looked big and athletic along the front line. UW SUP has a new guy, not sure if freshman or transfer, who is the same size as Bronson Byrne. Didn't see much of UWL and UWO is really young and has work to do.

How do you know when these open scrimmages happen? Is there a schedule somewhere?

On the just a game fieldhouse website, look for college events in the basketball section. Two were held this summer (6/8 and 8/10). The events resemble college summer leagues that are held in many cities e.g. Minneapolis and Milwaukee.

My sister plays for a D3 team in the state and I went primarily to watch her but I had to take a look at the WIAC teams that were there.

What does everything think the effect on UWSP will be with Brant Bailey coming back to his alma mater as a GA and practicing with the team a few times a week??  I think it's really going to pay dividends for the development of the big men.

I think this is a monumental hire, bigger than Brant Bailey going to Point. A lot of the headlines have been about the new 70% rule regarding in-region games (pretty sure that kicks in this year). Another new rule that no one has talked about is the implementation of the "player/coach position". If I read the release correctly, a former player at the any college level may return to coaching, at the same or lower level, and be granted 2 years of playing eligibilty as long as his graduating class has been at least 5 years removed and said player has played professionally, at any level, no more than 2 years in that minimal 5-year span. I'm surprised more former players haven't joined the coaching ranks. I'm sure we will see a big increase in the near future.

you didn't take this seriously, did you?

Are you saying that a former player could be granted 2 additional years of playing eligibility after they have used all of their original eligibility if they meet the criteria above?  I'm confused.  something I regrettably find myself experiencing more often as I age
