Attended the Backcourt Club Appreciation day yesterday and took in some practice drills and a short scrimmage drill by Point players. The good news is that all of them were healthy!! 15 on the roster this year, down from 22 last year at this time. Not much height beyond Heuer and 6'7" frosh Gjertson though. Not too much you can tell from a 45 minute practice, but very impressed with Pelkofer, who reminds me of a young Matt Moses.

Two scrimmages set, Friday at Duluth this week and Michigan Tech here next week Friday (2PM starts).

Was perusing the schedule to see what away games I can make trips to and see a tough ending to the year in store for the players. 12/28 vs Whitworth (26-4 #11 D3 Hoops last yr), then 12/29 vs Whitman (19-8 last year) at 6PM (8PM CST). A flight home & then turn around and get on the bus for a 4PM date on 12/31 vs North Central (28-4 #3 D3 Hoops last year).   Not sure if any teams have a tougher year end (doubtful), but we'll certainly know what type of team we have after these trips.

From 11/23/13 to 1/25/14 Point plays eight teams in Massey's current top 25 - #2 Whitewater - #3 St Thomas - #4 North Central - #13 Whitworth - #16 La Crosse - #17 Stout - #20 Platteville - #22 Hope.

So, 6'8" VanHandel isn't back on the team this season??  He was showing improvement last season.

Does anyone know about Nate Van Handel?

I think he suffered through some injuries over the past couple of years... they may have become too much.

I'll be attending the scrimmage on Friday against Michigan Tech, so if anyone doesn't answer this question by then, I will.  Looking forward to seeing this team in person, I've been excited for this upcoming season since last year ended.

Should be an interesting matchup. MTU has 2 seniors and 3 juniors but they're coming off back to back conference championships and a trip to the NCAA regionals last year.

MTU has a lot more size than Point, but these all appear to be young guys. Of their 11 guys 6'5" or taller, only 1 is an upper classman.

Anyone know how the scrimmage againt Duluth went?

I've been wondering the same thing, anybody??  I know Duluth has been down lately but obviously still a good test for Point.

I heard they played 3, 20-minute games with Duluth winning by 2 in the 1st and 3rd, and Point winning big in the 2nd.  Didn't get many other details

To no one's surprise, Point picked in the preseason poll.

http://www.wiacsports.com/news/2013/10/30/MBB_1030131924.aspx

So, interesting question.... who gave Whitewater the 1 vote?

There used to be an unwritten law (maybe part of the unofficial "code?") during the coach's poll that a coach wouldn't vote for his team. Maybe it was even written... you ranked the other 8 teams... instead of ranking all 9?

I don't remember when they went to SID's and coaches or what the votes were in the past...

Platteville really stinks, got pounded last night.  Could be a long year for the Pioneers.  ;)

Down by 6 (46-40) with 13 minutes left in the game hardly qualifies as "stinks".  I'm sure Bo got their attention and had them ratchet up the defense. The Badgers are the #21 DI team in the nation (USA Today poll) after all. I think the Pioneers will be just fine when they get into DIII play.

Pville will definitely do damage in the WIAC - only down 7 at the half.  From the box score, looked like Gerber played pretty well.  Only concern for the Pioneers would be their depth if a key guy went down.

That's difficult to answer right now because I haven't seen Jack enough to have a handle on his skill set.  He saw very limited playing time last year and I've haven't seen enough practice this year to have an idea of where he stands.  I may have a better idea after watching the team's intrasquad scrimmage Saturday and if so I'll comment.

One thing in his favor is that he has some size and that's something we don't have a lot of this year.  We've got plenty of guards though.

Yeah, I noticed their lack of height. I think the tallest numbered player was 6'5". There are two guys, I think, that are 6'6" and 6'8", but they don't have an assigned numbers ("grey shirting"?)

OH  ??? ::)

Nice to see WW's roster.  They are extremely deep in the backcourt as expected.  Some guys in the frontline will have to step up with Knoble and Harris gone.

Merg, Souter, Young, Bray, Odegaard and Bryson are going to make it very difficult for opposing teams to guard them on the perimeter.  I really like the matchup problems WW could cause by putting the speed and quickness of Young and Bray on the court at the same time, but that is just my thinking.  Have to wait for the season to start to see the lineups Miller likes to put on the floor.

Will be a tough WIAC season as usual, looking forward to seeing the Pointers in action tmw afternoon.  I'm most looking forward to seeing Pelkofer for the first time, the return of Tillema and seeing what to expect from the bigs throughout the season.
