It's the first game of the season...maybe their defense is just fine.

Point's defense was what impressed me the most when I watched them scrimmage Northern Michigan.  Heuer was more physical down low than he was last year and they had great rotation.  I think they just had an off night on that end of the floor last night.

And I think that Lawrence proved on Friday that they're able to put up lots of points.

I just think that there were several possessions where Point played swiss cheese defense...

I won't disagree with that one bit...I thought they played pretty lazy on that end of the floor for the little I could see on the video stream.  Lawrence was able to beat them down the floor on numerous occasions.  With that said, I know they have the ability to play great defense because I've already seen it first hand.  It was just an off night for them.

There is an element of the new defensive rules in this, no doubt.  The players have backed off until they figure out what the oafs are going to let them do with their hands.   One thing you should count on, longer games.  :(

Yeah... Larry U shot 30 FT's and Point shot 23. That's 53 shots... if we assume 2 shots (which they all were not) that's at least 27 trips.  27+ times where the flow of the game was completely stopped.

The game ended at 9:00 or about 20 minutes later than normal in previous years.

Lawrence game with Wisco Lutheran the night before the Point game was similar.  Noticeably slower pace.

He is still listed on the roster.  I wasn't able to attend the game at Carroll so I don't really know what's up.  We have a game tomorrow night so maybe I'll get something from that.

BW/Fred- I was at the game and Jack did play and played well. I don't recall how many minutes he played but he did play some both halves.  I anticipate he will see more playing time this year. I noticed that Carroll had his name/number mixed up in the program and that must have carried through to the box score.

Ok, that explains it.

I'm not certain about the playing time in the WARHAWKS game with Carroll but fouls called did exceed last year's averages.  Last year we had an average of 16 fouls called against us and 20 fouls whistled against our opponents.  The Carroll game saw 21 fouls called against us and 24 fouls called on Carroll.  Obviously with just a single game's worth of data it's too early to make any judgements so we'll just have to see how it plays out the rest of the season.

Greek Tragedy

1st game of the season for many, so the game speed is faster than practice speed...making the defender a step slow. Give me some averages after the holiday break and then I will listen to the complaints!

Another thing that will slow down games is the media timeouts.  In our women's scrimmage with Augustana there were eight media timeouts rather than the four that we used last year.  Media timeouts occurred at the first dead ball after 16, 12, 8 and 4 minutes of each half.  I was told that it was the way they were going to work this year.  So if teams used all their allowed timeouts you would have 18 timeouts in a game.

Point up 40-22 at half over Edgewood....Hass with 16, hit a couple 3's and has a couple really good hoops from posting up.  Tillema also playing really well.  I believe he has 8 but has set up teammates for easy buckets on a few occasions as well.

My only complaint would be that they aren't rebounding all that great.  Edgewood has a couple offensive boards that looked like they got because they outworked Point.

tomt4525

Just heard from the Edgewood announcers....Tillema with 5 assists at the half, set up teammates for wide open layups with those passes....He's so gifted driving the hoop and avoids contact so opponents can't get those charge calls.

tomt4525

Didn't realize this while watching the game....but at one time, Point was 22-28 from the field....they haven't been very good from the free throw line though.

tomt4525

Point wins 80-45 over Edgewood...finished 31-42 from the field, 5-8 from 3.....their shooting percentage is absolutely ridiculous after 2 games.

Trevor Hass now 10-10 from beyond the 3 pt line on the season. Point has to be disappointed in scoring only 80 points, Jack Taylor would have beaten them by 29 all by himself :P :P

Yes, the WIAC went to full TV rules for all games. I guess to mimic NCAA Tournament games. It seems pretty excessive to me.

UWSP is going to have to start missing more shots if they want to get those offensive rebounding numbers up. They only had one tonight.

UWSP ain't Cornerstone or Faith Baptist! ;D

Jack Taylor is obviously good, but I ain't impressed with big numbers against obviously over-matched teams.

(NOT a criticism of Jack Taylor, who was only doing what the coach ordered.  A criticism of the 'sportsmanship' of Coach Arsenault, who seems to think that getting huge numbers for a single player [which seems to me to be a bastardization of The System] against an obviously over-matched team is somehow a good thing.)

Jack Herum got 7 minutes in the WW blowout. Better than a  kick in the teeth, I guess. Eighteen guys played at least 4 minutes, so you can't say WW poured it on.
