Greek Tragedy

PS,

I beg to differ.  :P Wooster beat an opponent on the road that was receiving a good number of votes and then hammered #24 DePauw. I'm not saying they will jump Point, but I would not be at all surprised if they did.

In fact, I would be MORE surprised if Amherst and Point simply swapped spots with Wooster staying at #3. Amherst lost to an average Emerson team (they lost to Lesley by double digits-Lesley has one win). I might agree with you had Amherst lost to Middlebiry or Williams etc., but dropping just one spot after losing to Emerson, I would be surprised. :o

I think Cabrini will get some love being 8-0 having played 2 more games than Amherst and coming out unscathed.  I'm expecting SP, Wooster, Cabrini, Amherst, IWU, WW or Williams.  Amherst had some key guys out yesterday and if they don't get them back they could have a tough week against Brandeis and Babson.

I'm not going to say that Wooster hasn't played a tougher schedule up to this point... frankly, they have (based on composite record, Massey schedule-ranking, sniff test, etc). Wooster has handed "lone losses" to Bald Wally and Marietta and beat the two aforementioned (or at least aforealluded) (?) one-loss teams of Ohio Wesleyan and DePauw.

The "best" (in terms of record) team that SP has beaten is Edgewood, at 5-2. However, Stevens Point's mettle will be tested over the next month... playing 8 squads in the next month in Massey's top 1000 (and a 9th in St. John that's ranked 1002).  Wooster, on the other hand, plays 6 opponents over the next 5 weeks, none of whom crack the top 1000.

I guess the bottom line comes down to this... Point was more highly regarded in the preseason than Wooster. Both teams have won all of their games, (Wooster's margin against tougher competition is markedly closer... 9.2 ppg vs Point at 24.4). If anything, one might suggest that, even though they've played tougher competition, if Wooster was the top team in the land, they should have beaten their more-highly regarded opponents by a greater margin than 5, 6, 3, and 8 (the margins of the wins vs Bald Wally, Wheaton, Marietta, and Ohio Wesleyan).

In the end, it doesn't really matter... both teams are top 5 teams. Perhaps more interesting than the "who's better than who" or "who will be ranked ahead of who" (which are different arguments), I find it interesting that Wooster and Stevens Point have never played. For all of the success that Wooster has had over its 112 years (2nd in D-III with 1577 wins and a 5th best .672 winning percentage) and Stevens Point has had over its 114 years (11th in D-III with 1375 wins and 17th .640 best winning percentage) they've still never met.

Two teams that HAVE met with great frequency over the past 100+ years are Stevens Point and Whitewater.  They've played 179 times since 1912, with Stevens Point holding a 99-80 edge. Not only that, but Stevens Point has won each of the last 7 matchups, going back to Point's 3rd natty championship season of 2009-2010 in the conference tournament.

NEW POLL is out.

As expected by most, Point jumps to #1, going from 598 points and 6 first place votes to 611 and 16.

Whitewater drops 84 points and goes from 4th to 8th.

With the win over Whitewater, Stout jumps from ORV to 19th and gains 131 points.

Despite winning twice last week, Platteville goes from 9 votes (after dropping out of the Top 25-was #20 in Week 1 with 106 points) to zero votes.

Former #1 Amherst drops from 1st to 7th and loses 147 points.

I didn't want to take two from one team. Jenny's numbers slightly better than Whitehead's, though Whitehead outscored Jenny by 6. Jenny didn't cough up the ball four times in the 1st game. Jenny's line of 24 pts, 6 rebs, 4 assists, 5 steals and zero TOs is pretty impressive.

It was though this week as no player had two outstanding games.

Greek you're right about Jenny's line being impressive.  He's had a very good year to date.  If they get Ragland back and they continue to get solid inside support, they could easily challenge WW for the 2nd spot.  Stout, similar to last year, could very well place three on the always prestigious all WIAC team (although it's a bit early for that).

I wouldn't count out 1st place yet. From the looks of it, Whitewater is pretty darn good too. So to concede 1st place to Point already isn't realistic.  :P So, the Blue Devils could challenge Point and Whitewater for the crown. Platteville has Cross and La Crosse is balanced. It should be a great WIAC year.

Personally, I think that almost everybody who caught the ball travelled... Catch, one step, two steps... my middle school kids don't get away with that, but EVERYONE does it on the college level, so it's ok, I guess...?
