We had an interesting game with Oshkosh.  We led all the way, but they were in it until late in the game.

Why doesn't the WIAC pick a Freshman of the Year? Big Ten does, I think, and probably other D1 conferences. And even if they don't, so what.

Fred - good question, Big 10 definitely does as the color analyst for the Ohio State - Penn State game last night picked Vonleh from Indiana.

One of our neighboring D3 leagues selects a FOY (CCIW) so no reason WIAC couldn't

Just Bill

NACC does, but Midwest Conference doesn't. Seems odd to not have that award to me.

WSUC/WIAC used to have a freshman of the year award but discontinued it.  Not sure why.

Complete all-conference teams back to 1997-98 are on the WIAC site and none of those have a Freshman of the Year. There's also an all-time listing of All-Conference teams by school which goes back farther, but no player is indicated with an FOY or ROY tag.

I thought it used to exist too, but I can't find any evidence that it did.

LaCrosse: 73
WARHAWKS: 76

Scoring bursts by both teams characterized the game.  The largest lead in the first half was nine, 22-13 held by the WARHAWKS after KJ Evans drained a three-pointer about half way through the half.  But LaCrosse rallied and after an old fashioned three point play with four seconds remaining in the half the Eagles took a one point, 34-33, lead into the locker room.  Both teams shot well (WW: 50%, LaX: 48%).  Evans (11) and Reggie Hearn (10) led the WARHAWKS scoring while Calahan Skogman (11), Jared Staege and Lucas Collum each added  8 points for the Eagles.  After the Eagles opened the second stanza with a basket the WARHAWKS made a 14-2 run to retake the lead 47-38 and it briefly hit double figures 61-51 with just under eight minutes remaining.  Luke Tweed's eight points highlighted the Eagles 10-2 run to close the gap to 63-61 at the four and half minute mark.  The Eagles would pull to within a single point 65-64 with under three minutes.  At this point Alex Merg drilled a three-pointer, Eric Bryson followed with a steal and fast break layup and Merg added a pair of free throws to put the WARHAWKS up by eight, 72-64.  Quardell Young and Hearn each scored a pair from the free throw line in the final thirty seconds to preserve the win.

The WARHAWKS shot 55% while the Eagles shot 48% for the game.  Points in the paint were a significant factor in that as the WARHAWKS out scored the Eagles 44-24.

Evans' 19 points led the WARHAWKS while Hearn (18), Merg (16) and Bryson (10) also scored in double figures.  Hearn's 8 rebounds were a team high.  Young's 5 assists a game high and Merg had a game high 3 steals.

Skogman led all scorers with 28 points and added a game high 9 rebounds.  Staege (12) and Lucas Collum (10) scored in double figures as well.

Prior the the game Merg was named the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete.

The WIAC championship is now being live-streamed! Thanks to AD Daron Montgomery who got it done!

As an aside, we were planning on going to the game... but then we got word our furnace isn't working at home. Yay winter. So we're going home instead of to the game. We've got two general admission tickets if anybody is going to the game and will be in Point at about noon!
