For those in the area and unable to secure a ticket, WSAW is broadcasting the Stevens Point vs Emory game live Friday night....  Might be a little easier to watch on TV compared to your computer.  IF Point wins Friday night, Saturday's game is also scheduled to be televised live.

Wow, so who gets the TV $$$ for this?

Works just like every other TV or radio broadcast game. The broadcaster (WSAW) pays the rights holder (NCAA) a fee to broadcast. Then the broadcaster can sell advertising on it.

Congrats to former P-ville players Saul Phillips and Rob Jeter for leading North Dakota State and UWM to the NCAA D1 Tourney.  In addition another P-ville player Will Ryan is on North Dakota's staff.  They call Miami of Ohio the Cradle of Coaches for football is Platteville the new Cradle of Coaches for basketball. ;D

Greek Tragedy

Its a ratings bananza for WSAW. I have a friend that tells me they are asking Super Bowl-type prices for commercials during those time slots!

I also heard that Brant Bailey will finally use his player/coach waiver, get rid of the pink tie and socks and suit up for the Pointers. Dane Seckar-Anderaon was going to, but rules prohibit him from traveling down to DePauw and playing for the Lady Titans. Nick Bennett is awaiting a ruling on his status. If Point and Whitewater both advance, he wants to wear the red jersey and play "all-time offense". Ruling to follow.

I'm not sure if any of this is true, but thats what I heard...

Last, but not least, unnamed sources tell me that Jack Bennett will be wearing a Brett Favre New York Jets jersey so no one accuses him of favoritism.

Both match-ups tonight are pretty intriguing.

I've enjoyed watching the clips on Emory's website found here:

http://www.emoryathletics.com/video/index

Here's a write-up after their last game:

http://www.emoryathletics.com/sports/mbkb/2013-14/releases/20140308a6qsxm#

For some reason, Emory's leading scorer (and 2nd all-time in the program) didnt play.

From the game recap:

Playing without leading scorer Jake Davis, Emory trailed by a 19-13 margin with 10:45...

From the Centre game preview:

DAVIS MAKING A RUN AT EMORY'S ALL-TIME SCORING MARK – Jake Davis starts the weekend in the No. 2 spot on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,830 points, trailing only Tim Garrett's standard of 1,875 set from 1986 through 1990.  In addition, the Cincinnati native is making a bid to establish the program record for most points in a season with his 569 points second to Garrett's  597 (1989-90).   Davis currently ranks first on the Eagles' seasonal ladder with his 22.8 points-per-game this year.

So I've got to think it's some kind of injury... probably not something disciplinary (since the player interviewed said "hope we have him back") he's 45 points away from the all-time scoring record and he doesn't play?

There's a contrast in styles here. Emory appears to want to get up and go... they average 74.9 possessions per game (that's offensive possessions, so double that to 150 poss in the entire game) compared to UWSP at 62.4 (124 poss/gm).  Emory has scored in triple digits 4 times this season and they've scored 90+ 8 times.

Emory also takes care of the ball surprisingly well for a team with that many possessions... just 10.2 TO/gm. That comes out to a TO every .17 possessions... and so even though Point turns it over less per game (9.4) SP turns it over more often (a TO every .2 possessions).

In Emory's game last Saturday, they only ended up with 5 TO's and had none at halftime. That's pretty darn good.

I'm not sold on how good Emory is defensively though... while they've scored north of 90 8 times, they've let up 90+ 7 times... and they lost 5 of those games.

SP is averaging 120.1 points per 100 possessions (Off eff) and letting up 95.64 per 100 poss (Def eff).

Note: Marian was 106.36 (SP 112.34), 119 possessions.
Central 107.90 (SP 114.63), 132

Emory has and Off Eff of 112.3 and a Def eff of 103.8. Against Centre, Off eff: 116.4, Def Eff 98.5.  The game had approx 125 possessions.

Davis' availability could be key... SP has a chance to really wear Emory down. On the year, they've played 8 guys 10+ minutes, vs 9 for SP. If that's just 7, minus a 22 ppg scorer, that could be rough for Emory.

Here's a story from WSAW about the games, as well as some video about the economic impact that the sectional and next week's Womens Final Four are having in the community:

I would've liked to have seen Tillema take about 10 to 15 more shots poor rebounding the last three minutes of regulation doomed point.  Woulda shoulda coulda but bottom line is Davis was unreal.

I didn't get a chance to stream the games tonight.  Davis going off sounds like the year I saw IWU rip apart UWW at Whitewater when IWU went onto the final four.  Surprised they didn't win it all that year but my memory is foggy....

Would have been a good matchup between Point and UWW.  Looks like UWW is back on it's game dispite not having Sauter.  The games that I have streamed though WW has won pretty handly this year.

Here is the story on the Pointer game. Amazing that Tillema, Heuer and (gulp!) Lutz were the only ones to score in the 1st half.

Saw a picture of Joe Ritchay on the milk carton I got at work this morning. Where was Alex Richard? DNP

I only watched the first half before leaving but it looked to me like Point hadn't shaken the funk they were in last weekend.  They just weren't playing like the same team I'd seen.  I really thought they'd get it going in the second half.  When we checked the live stats on drive home and saw they were up by eight I thought ok now they'll go off.  We were shocked when we checked back later and saw the game was tied and headed to overtime.

A big key to the game was hass not being able to shake free and get many shot attempts.  Emory did a great job of not giving him many looks.  Tillema should've taken even more shots they had no answer for him whatsoever I wish he would've taken final shot in regulation.  Richard not playing at all was shocking to me as he provides a spark when he's in and is real good defensively and rebounding.  The way Tillema was getting to the glass so easily could've led to some bunnies for Richard.

I thought the turning point in the game was when Point was up 59-51 and Tillema dished to Pelkhofer for what looked to be an easy lay in, but he overlaid it and Emory rebounded and came down and hit a 3. Instead of a ten point lead with 5 minutes to go and more momentum, Point seemed to lose it instead. A missed three pointer by Hass was followed by another trey by Emory and the rest was history as they say. Davis did hit a big shot with 21 seconds to go for Emory, but Hass was unable to get free for a good look at the end of regulation. Should Point have called timeout at the end to set a play instead of letting the clock wind down?

I thought so too. I really thought that he scored and the just inbounded the ball really fast...

Different teams do things differently at the end of games. Think back to the first championship... SP got the rebound, in a tie game and instead of calling a time out, Coach Bennett called a play from the sideline.... which was run well but defended well too... and Kalsow just hit a tough shot for the win.

Also, in the Point/WW game at WW, Q Young didn't wait for a play... down 2, he just took the rebound and went coast to coast and not only scored but got fouled. He missed the rebound and the game went to OT, but they caught SP unawares I think (plus Q is just so darn quick).

Ok, so they shackled Hass. I understand that. But others did not step up for whatever reason.

Where was Richard? He didn't even play. Was he hurt? Surely he would've been a spark off the bench, both offensively and defensively. He doesn't score much, but he has had games when he has produced. Where was Ritchay? 14 minutes and no fouls? Did he get hurt during the game? He's had games where he has scored 20 points.  Did Pelkofer play that much better than Ritchay that he stayed on the floor? 28 minutes is impressive for someone who doesn't start.

I've been impressed with Heuer that last month or more. He's really shown what I think most of us expected the last two years. He was 7-10. How about feeding him the ball more?

I predicted Tillema was due for a huge game, he got it. But sounds like Emory had no answer for him, so feed him the ball more.

I know Emory had more size, so maybe that's why Ritchay didn't play so much? McGann and Lutz played a lot of minutes, for them.

Whitewater women coming to Quandt next weekend...for the Final Four. Congrats.

Can the men make it 2 for 2?

I, for one, even as a Pointer fan, hope so. If not the Pointers, another WIAC team will do.
