Quote from: frodotwo on March 23, 2014, 02:51:35 PMI've seen it mentioned numerous times that the WIAC has an unfair advantage as State schools with cheaper tuition, but I've also heard that the private schools also are able to provide significant scholarships and other aid to their students as well.

Some can, some can't. Nobody can generalize about the private schools of D3, because they cover such a vast spectrum of financial capability and policy. There are incredibly well-endowed private schools in D3, and there are schools that barely have two dimes to scrape together that are only able to keep the doors open every year because tuition dollars cover the school's annual budget. And there are private schools that are generous with financial aid and/or have lots of scholarships or grants available, and there are private schools that are very stingy with aid.

The majority of D3 private-school students get school-based financial aid of some kind, whether it be in the form of grants or scholarships. But for most students, a private-school education is a very, very expensive proposition that often requires years of subsequent payments. I was on a partial scholarship at North Park, and it still took me ten years to pay off my bank loans to go to school there. And I'm pretty typical in that regard.

I've known public-school alumni (or parents of public-school alumni) who've tried to put forth the argument that public schools really aren't cheaper, because their neighbors had a daughter who went to a private school for free, or somesuch. But cases like that are the exception, not the rule. On average, a public-school education is much cheaper in the long run than a private-school education.

Most notably, Williams and Amherst are the best examples of this(as well as a few other NESCAC schools) with their need-blind admissions policy(meaning whatever the financial aid form says you can afford, that's all you pay and the school covers the rest).  I've always wondered how much 'additional need-based aid' (as opposed to athletic scholarship $$ that we all know does not exist in D3)gets offered to the more highly regarded(and recruited) athlete showing interest in a D3 program AND who can qualify academically for admission to these highly selective schools.

In any case, the abundance of aid combined with the enhanced academic/educational opportunities makes for a much easier recruiting story and allows places like Williams and Amherst to draw a roster nationally represented.

Heard from a UW-Whitewater fan that the Warhawks have a 6-8 transfer coming next season from D2 Winona State.  An already impressive 2014-15 nucleus gets even better!
Anyone have a name?

There are two 6'8" kids on the roster - Kyle Bauman a rising sophomore ... Minnesota native who actually started down the stretch after Elkhorn native Skyler O'Laughlin got hurt.  This kid seems thoroughly in WSU's rotation.  Would be surprised to see him leave.

The other is Nick Arenz, from Onalaska - a rising junior who played with D1 UWGB before transferring to WSU.  Played in 33 of 34 game but only 10 minutes/game.  His minutes went down as the season wore on ... even after losing O'Laughlin.  Was surprised he did not play more for Winona.

One of the biggest advantages the WIAC has is not having very many D2/NAIA schools to compete against for kids with basically D2 state school tuition.

To some degree that applies to the Illinois D3's as well, though they have several more low D1's and NAIA's.  Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio all have strong NAIA and D2 conferences to compete against for recruiting.  The WIAC just doesn't have the competition.
Agreed only one D2 but Wisconsin loses a lot of players (6 to 10 per year) to D2 NSIC conference in Minnesota.  Also the volume of D1 players in the state has been increasing onver the years as well!

Quardell Young's game winning layup was #10 on ESPN's top 10 plays last night.

Any thoughts on what Sandy Cohen might be thinking--or more importantly, Jon Murphy?  ???

Think he wants to follow Buzz or go somewhere else?

MU has Deonte' Burton, Duane Wilson, Nick Noskowiak (verbal), Cohen, etc.  Really becoming a WI team.  Wonder if that is by chance or by design?

The more they suck--and they sucked a lot this year-- the less the interest will be--local players can really improve interest.

Surprised the NCAA allowed that in light of their dark approach to this year's final.  I guess only Putin can keep the press away.  :o

Vander Blue was the difference between a NCAA team and no tournament at all ... amazing what one player can mean to a team's success/fortune.  With the holes this team had at PG and SG ... amazing they did as well as they did!

I have to admit that I wasn't sure 3.9 seconds was enough time to get it done.  Great job by Q for getting it done. It was an incredible weekend for the WARHAWKS.

Wasn't there 4.8 seconds on the clock?

Congratulations to Whitewater on the national title! Pretty impressive closing speed by Quardell Young on the game winning drive and layup.  Is he left-handed? If not, that drive was all the more impressive.

This was all CBS and not the NCAA. Where the NCAA fell down was in not standing up to CBS and requiring they stream live video for this championship.

Although I haven't seen a study comparing public vs private school loan burdens, I feel comfortable agreeing with you that it's likely the average private school student has a larger loan than the average public school student.
That said, I don't think the subject matter revolves around costs and loans to the typical student population. The subject matter is specific to athletes at the school. It seems reasonable that a private  school with financial strength that wants an athlete has the ability to make the costs work out.

Btw- I graduated UWW in 1987 and needed the assistance of my wife to pay off my student loan in 1994.

Quardell is left handed.  He is quick no doubt but the physical trait that impresses me the most is his leaping ability.  I don't know what his vertical is but it's impressive.  When he takes the ball to the basket he can elevate over guys much taller than himself and some of the blocks he has pulled off this year are OMG.

For me, live stats did not work until after the first media timeout. At which point I was trying to tally up points on paper, as if it were 1999.
