Thanks BW. I actually recall you saying something about NC pulling a fast one on you. I was just going by what the  WIAC site has.

My apologies to Eau Claire, but while posting this weekend's schedule, I did think to myself, "Wow, Eau Claire got Washington U. and Wheaton to go up there?" Guess I should have known better!

So is St Olaf any good?  They were able to stick with the Pointers, that seems to be a positive.   ???

Good luck Pointers.  Hope doesn't lose very often in their gym and it would be nice to see the WIAC go 2-0.

BTW, any Pointer fans planning on making the trip be prepared to see the best DIII facility in the country.  It's a really incredible facility.

Point got hosed tonight.
StO 70 UWSP 69

Jist curious if you saw the play online or heard on the radio etc. Do you think we got hosed because of the actual call or the timing?

Interesting game. Sound like both teams were up double digits but couldn't put the game away.

Watched the live-stream.

I'll readily admit that Point shot themselves in the foot multiple times.  Let's see...

- Let a 10 pt first half lead dwindle
- Went 7 minutes without scoring to start the second half
- Had 2 FT opportunity down 1 with 0:09.8 left and only made 1 to tie the game instead of take the lead.

But to call an off-the-ball foul with the clock running down and the game tied?

If STO makes a shot to win it, good for them. If they don't, the game goes to overtime. But let it be decided on the court.

STO set up a play where a ball handler was going to go off of a double high screen with two wide shooters and one of the screeners likely rolling to the basket. It was a decently drawn up play for the time on the clock, situation, personnel, etc. Kind of what you'd expect from a coach like STO's, who's been there 21 years.

But BEFORE the ball even got to the screens, a foul was called on Pelkofer. Nobody landed on the ground (in which case the foul would be obvious). No one was held (i.e. their progress was impeded).

I can't watch the replay at work. I'll watch it again to see, but I don't think it will change my opinion!

We were planning on going up, especially because one of my wife's friends lives in Grand Rapids, but it just isn't going to work out. I was really looking forward to it too!

I don't like the sentiment that refs shouldn't call fouls late in games. They should call the game the same from start to finish. The player who fouls is the one who's deciding the game, not the referee who's calling it.

That being said, I'm not convinced that UWSP committed a foul on this play. It's close, and on first viewing I was 100% in agreement with the official, but upon review it looks like it was the St. Olaf player who actually hooked the arm of the Stevens Point defender and then added a bit of playacting to sell the call.

Greek Tragedy

Frodotwo has been unusually quiet in this early season. I would imagine he's headed over to Holland. I believe Brian R. Carroll and chmarx went there when La Crosse was part of the Hope regional.  If I remember correctly,  when the 2nd round matchup was Hope v Calvin, fans from the other two teams weren't even allowed to buy a ticket.

You're right about Hope not losing very often at DeVos, but they have lost 3 in a row at home. (Calvin, Penn St. Behrend, UWW). I was impressed with how Hope played against UWW.  I was hoping to get to the game Saturday but it's not going to work.  I think the Hope fans will be out in full force Sat. Night.  The crowd was down Tuesday due to the weather.

Just sayin, but it would be well worth the trip and your time!!!  :)       Looking forward to a very good game!!  Safe travels to all!

I don't mean don't call fouls late in games. To be sure, there WAS a foul 7.1 seconds (of game time) earlier when Joe Ritchay drove and missed his layup attempt.

This.

And this is why the call shouldn't have been made.

At the moment that it affects the outcome of the play, then call it. But the ball hadn't even gotten to the screen yet (if my memory serves me correctly).

Maybe you're asking the wrong question. Is Point any good? They steuggled against the 4th and 5th place (preseason poll) teams in the "St. Thomas and everyone else" league. Interestingly,  St. Olaf got more 1st place votes than #2 GAC and #3 Bethel.

Point is or will be good. St Olaf has a great choir, as does St. Thomas.  Come tourney time, they won't be able to sing for their supper.
