Greek Tragedy

So La Crosse finishes 6-10 last year, loses their two big guns in Zuiker and Cameron, return 1 starter and picked to finish 7th...and they're in 1st place at 7-2. Even Nostradamus wouldn't have predicted that one.

With five games to go, here is where things stand:

UW-La Crosse   7-2
UW-River Falls   6-3
UW-Eau Claire   6-3
UW-Oshkosh   5-4
UW-Whitewater 4-5
UW-Stevens Point 4-5
UW-Platteville   4-5
UW-Stout   0-9

Could the WIAC Tournament be without one of Whitewater or Stevens Point this year?

Or BOTH?! :o

Hoops Junkie

both wont happen as it is a 6 team playoff and stout has firmly locked the 8th place.  The WIAC is the WACKY WIAC

I'll make a wager on that....  With Stout sitting at 0-9, they would likely need to win out, which isn't happening.

Probably have better odds that both Whitewater and Stevens Point make the WIAC Tournament than miss it.

Just reading some of the comments from Coach Koelbl and D McHugh -

As a former heavier poster who no longer follows the league like I did in the past, there's no doubt the WIAC is very competitive but it's tough to convince me the league is better talent wise.

Back in the time period of say 2009 - 2013, "transfer backs" from mainly D2 schools populated many of the team's rosters.

Are there as many former D1 / D2 players currently playing in the WIAC?

I didn't realize the WIAC tourney was six teams - thought it was only four.  Yeah, the odds are they'll both make the tourney.

WARHAWKS: 72
Stevens Point: 51

Sean McGann opened the scoring with a jumper giving the Pointers their only lead of the game.  Cole VanSchyndel answered with a pair of layups.  After the Pointers tied the game 4-4 Haki Stampley hit a three pointer and Trinson White a layup to put the WARHAWKS up by five and Andre Brown's layup gave the WARHAWKS a seven point lead but the Pointers responded reducing it to a single point seven and half minutes into the half.  The WARHAWKS lead remained in single digits reaching it's high of seven points a second time, 26-19, on a three point play by VanSchyndel with less than two minutes remaining.  McGann scored the last four points of the half pulling the Pointers to within 26-23 when it ended.  The WARHAWKS shot 53% in the half while holding the Pointers to just 30% but the Pointers had five steals and outscored the WARHAWKS 8-2 off of turnovers.  The WARHAWKS were repeatedly able to get the ball into the paint outscoring the Pointers 16-4.  VanSchyndel (9) and Brown (6) led WARHAWKS scorers while Stephen Pelkofer (6) paced the Pointers.  After Marquis Turner opened the second half with a basket in the paint pushing the lead to five McGann scored the next four points pulling the Pointers back to within a single point, 28-27, however that is as close as they would get the rest of the way.   However with the exception of a couple of occasions the lead remained in single digits until, leading by nine 51-42 with seven and half minutes remaining, Nate Hensel and White hit back to back three point baskets igniting a 21-9 run to finish the game.  The WARHAWKS finished the game shooting 57% while holding Point to just 27% and dominated in the paint outscoring Point 40-8.

WARHAWKS:
White: 23 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists
VanSchyndel: 15 points, 6 rebounds
Brown: 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and steal
Hensel: 11 points, 4 rebounds

Point:
McGann: 20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals
Pelkhofer: 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, steal
Brad Freeborn: 7 points, 7 rebounds

We needed this.  Hopefully it's a signal of better things to come.  A couple adjustments in the starting lineup going with Marquis Turner instead of Drew Bryson and Brown in place of Jerry Ngobi.  La Crosse comes to Williams Center Saturday.

La Crosse: 74
WARHAWKS: 68

La Crosse got the first basket and with the exception of a 6-6 tie maintained a single digit lead for a little over eleven minutes though both teams struggled to score from the field.   A three point basket by Haki Stampley gave the WARHAWKS their first lead 11-9.  However the lead only last a few minutes before Staege hit a three regaining the lead for the Eagles 18-15.  The Eagle lead grew to six points when the half ended 26-20.  The WARHAWKS shot a lousy 27% and turned the ball over 11 times.  Stampley led the way with 6 points while Trinson White added 5 points and both he and Andre Brown pulled down 5 rebounds apiece.  The Eagles were led by Staege who went 3-3 from beyond the arc totaling 11 points and pulling down 4 rebounds.  After the Eagle lead had grown to double digits in the first five minutes of the second stanza the WARHAWKS were able to reduce it to four, 35-31, on another three point basket by Stampley.  But the Eagles responded and their lead grew to a high of fifteen, 63-48, with three and half minutes remaining.  The WARHAWKS cut the lead to seven 65-58 over the next couple of minutes but the Eagles went 9 for 10 from the free throw line to preserve the win.  Despite 17 offensive rebounds the WARHAWKS only outscored the Eagles 4-2 on second chances.

WARHAWKS:
Stampley: 20 points, 3 rebounds
White: 19 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks
Brown: 10 points, 9 rebounds
Marquis Turner: 7 points, 3 rebounds

La Crosse:
Staege: 21 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 2 steals
Austin Fritz: 15 points
Ben Meinholz: 13 points, 6 assists, 1 steal
Team: 15 assists on 25 baskets, 16-18 from the free throw line

So, it turns out the Point game wasn't signaling anything except that we are what we are.  We can be good and we can be bad.  Six conference losses by 19 total points.    I don't know that I've ever been more frustrated with a WARHAWKS season.

I've given up hope. I feel like I'm talking to myself sometimes...and that has nothing to do with the WIAC board!  ???  ;D  :-X

I've been so frustrated with the team that I've been tempted to quit posting wraps but I've continued with it because I don't want anyone to think that I only do them in the good times.

That's a laudable attitude, and it should go for the league as a whole, too. Are some of the regular posters here taking a sabbatical until the league improves? If so, that's a real shame.

This would be a great time for those who feel the message board is dominated by UWW and UWSP fans to jump in! (In all honesty though, that's probably a more common complaint on the WIAC football board.)

Admittedly, I have posted much more in the past.  I still watch every Pointer game, have actually attended more games this year than I have recently.  I have posted some summaries and thoughts throughout the season, and it hasn't sparked any conversation.  I felt like it fell on deaf ears, so I stopped.  Maybe some other posters can post some thoughts and opinions to get this board going.
