I guess the non-UWW and non-UWSP fans are going to have to pick up the slack around here for a while.

Why start now?  ???  ;D

Time to start prognosticating on D1 and D2 transfers that might be available for 2016/17?  ;)

Congratulations to the Falcons (and UW-EC) for their victory. After watching the game, I have now paid $16 to watch Warhawk/Falcon action this year. Was not too pleased with my purchase when the first two possessions of UW-RF showed a camera angle that did not include the basket! But after that, it was better.

I was very impressed with the Falcons' overall defense and particularly their ability to collapse on White as he drove to the basket. First, whoever guarded him did a nice job on him as he didn't seem to be able to blow by him as easily as he did against some other teams. Then, when he did penetrate and get to the hole, he seemed to find himself in basically a one on four situation many times. With that many arms and legs in the area, it wasn't even easy for him to kick the ball back out.

Good luck to the Falcons the rest of the way and I will be rooting for the WIAC Champ to do some damage in the NCAA's.

Greek Tragedy

I will be cheering the WIAC hard in the NCAAs. The problem is, I don't know what team is best equipped for a run. I think anything less than the 2nd weekend will be a disappointment and the outside observers will view the WIAC as Point and Whitewater and everyone else. Yes, this would probably mean beating the likes of Benediction, North Central, St. Thomas or the like on their home floor in the 2nd round. This year is a rare opportunity for the likes of River Falls, Eau Claire, Oshkosh and La Crosse to show what the WIAC has outside of the Purple Guys. I'm both excited and afraid to see what happens. A 1st round exit (at best, on a neutral floor) will be a worst case scenario for whomever represents the WIAC.

I know this will sound like sour grapes...and I guess, rightfully so....But, the refs allowing Martinek and Diekelman to push off blatantly over and over when they would make moves to the basket really took something out of an entertaining game for me.  If push-offs were called, they both would have been fouled out in the first half.  I guess credit goes to UW-EC for recognizing it won't ever get called and continuing to do it, and disappointed that UWSP didn't play towards how the game was getting called.  It's been a super weird season to follow along with and I don't even know who to root for, I guess I'll go with UWRF since I live closest to them.

On another note, I heard last night that Adam Hjelter for EC was granted another year of eligibility.  Eau Claire will be very tough again next season.

I've noticed the guard arm bar frequently this year. Especially, when a player drives, has not beaten his man, has him arm bar up, is creating the contact and then gets a call, while the defensive player has his hands up and looks pretty straight up and down and is usually forced somewhat back. It's a tough call for the defense. Sometimes there is an extension, easily offensive, but not always. I would assume if you are going to let a guy drive, and he has not beaten his man, but clearly has his arm up to protect the ball, is leading with it and moving forward, you would go with the no call. Too many times you see the opposite. Good for the teams that are taking advantage of this and a player that can do it. Maybe they will all be doing it soon!!

Didn't Diekelman do same when he played high school ball at SPASH?  I know Trevor Anderson gets away with murder in games I saw him play vs the Wausau area schools.

I would agree with you if the driver was just using the armbar to protect the ball and not extending the arm at all.  In this case, they were blatantly extending the arm and in fact shoving their defender.  In that case, you are being given a huge advantage over the defense and needs to be called as an offensive foul.  I have no ill will towards EC or Diekelman or Martinek.  They were playing the game as they were allowed to and gave them the best chance at succeeding.  I just really hope I never have to see those refs again.  I have no clue how they have moved up the ladder of officiating if that is how they normally call a game.

You may not want to see them, but there are likely quite a few coaches that would!!!!

They are widely regarded by many as one of the best crews in the WIAC....

Well that's because we from Point don't like them from Wausau.  ;D  :)

I lived there for a few years--work project-- so I went to see SPASH games at East and DC Everest.  I think a major factor is their coach screaming at the refs all night long. SPASH is a hell of a team, though.

This isn't me signing off for the year... but it is a bit of a postmortem on UWSP.

I was looking at the preview for the Eau Claire game and saw some things that I liked and some that I didn't.

Point was #8 in the country in scoring defense (61.5 ppg). Also #5 in fewest turnovers (9.6 to/gm).

But UWSP was tied for 407th in scoring in the country. That's dead last. 62.2 ppg.

On a similar note, Point's women lost last night at Oshkosh 38-21.

Some things that jumped out at me (other than the half-time-like final score)... 0-11 from 3. Just 3/4 from the FT line. Just 9/49 (18%) from the field. And 15 turnovers.... to 0 assists.

Both teams had more rebounds than points.

SP's women are having a good year (20-7), and have been ranked in the top 25 for a good portion of the season (along with Oshkosh, River Falls, and Whitewater). And regardless of the outcome (point-wise), a loss in the semi's is the same if you lose by 40 or by 1 in 3OT's.

I hope for their sake that they get another shot at it to clear the bad taste out of their collective mouths!

Wow...I knew their offense was down this year, didn't think it was that far down though.  Almost exclusively, their offensive sets included a game of 2 on 2 with McGann and Pelkofer.  What happens when you double them and force other people to beat you though??  I felt all season they needed to play more team oriented offense than they were doing.

havej

Only saw them play maybe three times on video but very apparent they didn't have a guy who was an attacker playing downhill
