Greek Tragedy

Well...that doesn't bold well for the Blugolds. I was anticipating at least one win this week.

What's cool is the way whitewater dominated stout wasn't even a battle.  Oshkosh will have to play their best game to even have a remote chance.  My guess is whitewater got a little bored and took a few games off knowing their far and away most talented team in the conference and will now step it up.

Stout (13-13): 69
WARHAWKS: 78

What was cool last night wasn't what I would call WARHAWKS domination.  Stout played hard and several times when it looked like we might start pulling away they fought back to within a point or two.  The cool thing was that we responded each time and rebuilt 8-10 point leads.

Woodley was a load.  His quickness was a problem for the Blue Devil defense.  When he didn't get to the rim and finish he was fouled.  The junior finished with 24 points (11-12 free throws) and six rebounds.

The WARHAWKS were really aggressive attacking the basket scoring 34 points in the paint and getting to the free throw line for 32 free throws.

If we could just eliminate the stretches where we don't move the ball enough.

We're giving up too many offensive rebounds.  Stout had 16 last night though they only held a 13-12 advantage in second chance points.

I like John Lahti's game a lot.  He always seems to play well against us.

I ran into some of the Titan coaches out recruiting at a high school game last night--I know recruiting high school kids is not Shinetime U's modus operandi  ::)--and they appeared to already be looking ahead to next year, as having to play the eventual national champs is just a lethal draw.  :'(

With Eau Claire losing last night, an Oshkosh W over Whitewater ought to make them a Pool C.  Trend is good.   ;)

Math is not. UWO won't get over the Mendoza line of .667 winning percentage as a Pool C. If they stick with that, which is not a guarantee, of course, then UWO will basically be automatically eliminated.

Also, my goodness, they'll have 10 losses. Come on now ...

UWO needs to win it. UWEC is in trouble. 50/50 they get in.

Okay, I agree too.  It's all math.

Based on how they do this formula, a WIAC team could lose its first 9 games, then turn it around and win 18 in a row, rolling to the regualr season title. If they lose the conference tourney championship, they are out.

Shinetime was seen driving through Pennsylvania last night.

Yep. Because all games count, not just the ones in January and February.

If you've been reading this board, you'll know that I've been touting the Blugolds for a Pool C bid. That loss this week really has me concerned. I really thought they would get a win there.

Anyway, I did some number crunching and had my own mock Pool C selection process (see it over on the Pool C board). Mind you, I'm not an expert and I was using the regional rankings and numbers that ended on Sunday, so this week's loss isn't factored in. As with every Pool C candidate, save for the UAA teams, everyone loses a game. But getting a tourney win helps. Right now Eau Claire stands at 17-8 and that .680 win % looks ugly. At 17-7 they were at .708. They would've actually needed to go 2-1 this week, end up 19-8 to stay above .700.

The good news is that there are a lot of teams with similar records and EC, for the most part, has a better, if not, far superior SoS against those teams. In fact, when I ran my mock Pool C selection, after just the 6th round, there were three other teams at the table with 7 losses, Amherst, Emory and Loras.

Augustana, who is ranked below EC also lost this week and play again in the CCIW tourney this weekend. EC is also helped by Oshkosh getting ranked this week. That's two more vRRO games, though losses. I only mention this because the key is getting to the table as fast as you can, the less obstacles, the better. EC will also be hoping that Oshkosh or La Crosse don't win the WIAC tourney title because that would just push River Falls AND Whitewater into Pool C territory, though both would be expected to go fast.

If you don't care what happens outside the WIAC, think again. A lot of nervous nailbiting this week.
