Ryan Callahan UW-W AD was quoted recently saying that the cost of testing was the "straw that broke the camel's back."  It's simply prohibitive.

A coach in the central region told me for his school it was going to cost $1m for the year to do the testing. They have 22 sports including football.

That is a lot of money and doesn't take into account a number of things that could add to that total. It also doesn't take into account finding a lab that will guarantee turning the tests around fast enough (I personally experienced how those plans can go to hell even for a professional organization).

It just isn't feasible.

The off season has hit August and with it has come news of Division III Fall Championships being canceled for the same reason Winter Championships were derailed and Spring Championships pulled earlier this year: COVID 19 Pandemic.

The decision came on the heals of a vast majority of DIII institutions curtailing fall sports and many pushing winter sports starts on their campuses until January at the earliest.

What does this mean for the 2020-21 season of college basketball? Specifically what does it mean for Division III? Will there be a basketball season? Will it be a six-week-or-so-sprint? Or is there a way to adjust things?

On the Mid-Summer edition of the Hoopsville Podcast, we try and get some answers to those questions. We talk to one coach who actually has put together a proposal to start the season in January, with some changes to make it work including crowning a champion in April. And we talk to an administrator who also serves on the DIII Management Council to better under stand the decisions made to cancel championships and if shift a season like basketball is even possible.

Plus, we honor the best of the best in the last decade of Division III women's basketball. Gordon Mann joins us to discuss how the 2nd D3hoops.com Women's All-Decade came together (and hints of work on the men's list).

Guests include:
- Philip Ponder, Oglethorpe men's coach
- Jason Fein, Bates Athletics Director and DIII Management Council member
- Gordon Mann, D3hoops.com Senior Editor

And of course, there is always the Hoopsville Notebook. A few things we take note of that have made headlines since the beginning of July. We also tip our hat to a few of those who have always helped the show be it's best.

I didn't think I'd see anymore schedules be posted admit so much uncertainty but UWSP did post a partial schedule last week.

https://athletics.uwsp.edu/sports/mens-basketball/schedule/2020-21

St Thomas, Albion, and NWU are/were scheduled to be new non conference opponents from last season. St Olaf, Bethel, Superior, Hope, and Edgewood return from 19-20.

Also of note, both Oshkosh are/were games are scheduled for Saturday including a season finale at the Quandt.

Former UW-Stout and Madison West 6'1" G, Cliff McCray is transferring to UWSP.  Averaged around 9 ppg for the Blue Devils and was 2nd Team All Big 8 in high school.

Iola-Scandinavia 6'2" G, Justin Sivertson, will play basketball at La Crosse.  Justin was conference player of the year in the Central Wisconsin East and averaged 21 ppg.

6'7" Kaukauna F, Jacob Newhouse, has committed to UWSP.  Newhouse had a D2 offer from Minnesota-Crookston as well as other D2 schools showing interest.  UWSP needed this to add some size.

Stevens Point adding some more talent to the roster today....  Former Oshkosh North standout Phillip Flory (6'4") is planning to play for the Pointers this season.  Flory walked on at Seton Hall out of high school in 2017-18 and then transferred to Albany to play in 2018-19.  I don't believe Flory played last year, so he should have two years of eligibility remaining.
2008-09 and 2012-13 WIAC Fantasy League Champion

2008-09 WIAC Pick'Em Tri-Champion

I hope this news helps UWSP with Phillip's younger brother, Grant, who is a senior at Wisconsin Rapids and should be a priority recruit for D2's and D3's.

The WARHAWKS nation mourns the loss of former basketball player Lucas Burns who passed away earlier this week of cancer.  His career spaned 2009-12  he was a member of the 2012 National Champions.  He was operating a restaurant and brewery in Whitewater following his graduation.  Way, way too young.  My condolences to his family and those who loved him.  RIP Lucas.  I'll miss seeing you at the pub.  :(

CANCER SUCKS

6'5" Stratford F, Vaughn Breit, will play basketball at UWSP.

tomt4525

As of now....UWSP has 13 incoming players that have made commitments.  I thought they needed quite an influx on players to practice the way they would want to practice, but 13 definitely exceeded the number I had in my head by a long shot.  It makes me question whether or not all players with eligibility left are coming back.  With everyone back, the roster would sit at 22.  I don't remember it ever being that high.

Ryan Genrich 6'1" Mukwonago
Trey Zastrow 6'0" Manitowoc Lutheran
Elijah Vander Velden 6'8" Wabash(IN)
Ryan Peterson 6'1" Northland Pines
Ethan Breheim 6'5" Alma Center Lincoln
Levi Ewan 6'0" Rib Lake
Anthony Espensen 6'4" Belvidere North(IL)
Cooper Weinfurter 6'0" Auburndale
Jaxon Flaherty 6'1" Unity
Cliff McCray 6'1" Madison West - Transfer from UW Stout
Jacob Newhouse 6'6" Kaukauna
Phillip Flory 6'4" Oshkosh North - Transfer from D1 Seton Hall/Albany
Vaughn Breit 6'5" Stratford

Pretty sure 2019 recruit Logan Mulhern has also decided to join the Pointers after sitting out a year.  Plenty of shooters headed to the Quandt.  If they can get some inside play they might be building something again.
