Well, I finally received some information regarding some of the missing players for UWSP...albeit disappointing news.  Jacob Newhouse was at UWSP for a semester last year then decided to join the workforce instead of returning.  Trey Zastrow quit the basketball team early on last year.  That is two very promising recruits for UWSP leave, on top of Espensen transferring.  This year, Angelo Rizzo, another promising recruit, also gone from the roster.  I remember for the longest time that UWSP hardly ever had anyone leave the program, last few years has been very common.  I'm not sure if it has to do with the less than stellar record lately or the program itself.  But, if the program is going to become respectable again, these things can't keep happening.  They need to keep their top recruits in the program.

'95 Blugold

Blugold game at Wartburg has been postponed. In this day and age it could be Covid related, but I'm guessing it due to the fact that Wartburg Volleyball got selected to host a D3 Regional this weekend and the basketball game got bumped as a result.

The WARHAWKS improved to 2-0 with a 86-65 win over Gustavus Adolphus last night.  Trailing by fourteen with just under six minutes remaining in the first half the WARHAWKS rallied and cut the deficit to a single point 40-39 at the half and then opened up an eight point lead early in the second half and never trailed after that.  Gage Malensek led all scorers with 25 points and had 3 assists and 4 steals.  Derek Gray chipped in 15 and Elijah Lambert added 11.  The WARHAWKS dominated in the paint outscoring the taller Gusties 58-32.

2. UW-Oshkosh        (5-2, 4-1)
3. UW-La Crosse      (8-3, 5-1)
4. UW-Whitewater    (1-7, 1-4)
5. UW-River Falls      (5-4, 3-2)

Has there ever been a time in history where UWSP was chosen last in the preseason poll?

Platteville beats #19 Whitworth 90-69. Platteville jumps out to a 20 point lead at halftime. Whitworth chipped away and got to within 11 before the Pioneers pulled away at the end. Tuma and Sheilds led the way with 21 and 19 points. Whitworth plays WW Saturday night which should help measure the strength of the WIAC.

I watched a good part of this game.  To me it was the difference in experience.  The Whitworth guys, many of them, are still learning their roles and playing together, whereas the Platteville team was very comfortable.  You saw, when Whit was able to crawl back a little, what they're capable of, but they're not yet able to put it together for 40 minutes against a good team.

I can't wait for the first Platteville-Oshkosh game, though.  That should be excellent!

Augsburg River Falls was COVID not sure for which team. Hoping Eau Claire Wartburg was volleyball related, but no reason was actually given.

WARHAWKS drop a close one to Whitworth 80-79.  Leading by three, 40-37, at the half Whitworth was able to expand the lead to fifteen 67-52 by the midway point of the second half before the WARHAWKS went into a full court press and mounted a comeback which brought them to within a point with :39 to play.  After getting a defensive stop the WARHAWKS had possession and the chance with :08 remaining.  Derek Gray's dribble penetration got him into the lane but his heavily contested shot was wide of the mark.  Gray led all scorers with 22 points and added 5 rebounds and 4 steals.  Gage Malensek finished with 12 and Trevon Chislom chipped in with 10.  Whitworth's scoring balance was tough as five players hit double digits.

WARHAWKS take on Viterbo in LaCrosse the 23rd.

Platteville completes the weekend sweep with a 77-62 win over Gustavus Adolphus. Platteville hung to a small lead for most of the game then midway thru the 2nd half they started to distance themselves from GA. Platteville has a 9 man rotation and Coach Gard substituted frequently to keep players fresh. This payed off towards the end as it's tough playing 2 games in 2 days this early in the season. Concordia-Mequon visits Bo Ryan Court this Wednesday.

Little rough patch for WIAC teams as Lakeland-Stout is postponed tomorrow night due to COVID protocols.

Greek Tragedy

Man, once conference season hits full gear after the new year, it's probably going to be impossible to make up these nonconference games. If When there's COVID postponements during the conference season, there may be no way to find dates to play them. Two weekends into the season and there seems to be a number of games "postponed" due to COVID already.

It'll be a long season for us Pointer fans. Point attempts 20 more shots than Bethel...and loses 76-55. Point shoots 30% and Bethel shoots 60%.

Some struggles for the WIAC top three tonight. CUW hung with UWP for 30 minutes. Pioneers ran away with it, 83-67. Lawrence hung with Oshkosh the entire game before the Titans hit a few late free throws to win 80-74. And Sean Suchomel hit a tough fade away sideline jumper at the buzzer for La Crosse to top Augsburg 75-74 in overtime.

Good to see River Falls, Augsburg, Eau Claire, and Wartburg already back in action after postponements. Eau Claire-Augsburg must've been because of volleyball. Hopefully we can get come new dates confirmed soon.
