With the New Year comes not only a change to #Hoopsville, but increased concern about #COVID.

Tonight, Hoopsville returns from the holiday break with a move to Monday evenings (from the previous Sunday night position). With the return also comes the return to plenty of cancelations and postponements due to COVID. We chat with Jason Fein, Athletics Director at Bates College Athletics and member of the NCAA Division III Championships Committee and Management Council, about the challenges the Omicron variant is now throwing at college and athletics administrations. What may change in the coming weeks and what we may be talking about still when selections and brackets are released at the end of the season.

Plus, there are plenty of cancelations and postponements to try and weed through.

We also talk to two teams making headlines around #d3hoops. They include Drew Rangers women's basketball who are off to a program best 10-0 start. We chat with th Rangers head coach John Olenowski.

Plus, UW-Platteville Athletics men's basketball is undefeated and getting first place votes in the Top 25. Coach Jeff Guard joins us to talk about his Pioneers.

All that and we breakdown the new Top 25 polls! Ryan Scott and Bob Quillman join Dave to react to the men's poll and to give their Dubious, Deep Dive, and Debatable teams.

Tune LIVE starting at 7:00 PM ET!

You can watch the show LIVE (or on demand) here: https://www.d3hoops.com/hoopsville/archives/2021-22/jan3 or http://www.d3hoops.com/x/fh5lq

Jake Buchanan is now listed on UWSP's roster.  The good news, he's listed as a freshman.  I thought he'd be a sophomore eligibility wise.  For UWSP's sake, hopefully he plays this season out and 3 more after this for the Pointers.

UWRF at UWSP is canceled tonight due to covid with UWSP. UWSP receives a loss the standings. WIAC had the same policy in fall sports where they are not rescheduling conference games.

This is the 3rd time that I know of this season that UWSP has been hit with an outbreak and either lost players or got shut down.  I'm sure there have been issues with other programs in the conference but it sure seems like UWSP has been hit much harder than anyone else.  Frustrating as a fan considering this was a game I can actually see in person.  I certainly don't want to point fingers but it seems certain that maybe the necessary precaution is not being followed by players and personnel.

Platteville improves to 14-0 on the season with a 60-46 win at Eau Claire. Both teams were as cold from the floor as the weather outside, Platteville shot 38 percent from 2 points and EC shot 34 percent Both teams shot 25 percent from 3 point range.  Shields led Platteville with 19 points. Stovall got in early foul trouble and wasn't much of a factor. Platteville had a good night at the line they shot 17 of 22 while EC only shot.3 of 7.

Whitewater defeats Oshkosh in overtime in a stunning final result. A rollercoaster for a tale of two halves to get there. Whitewater was without two starters, probably covid, and still won a snowy night on the road. Great win for their resume, but it's not a killer for Oshkosh.

Interesting Gard comments on Hoopsville about playing games with what ya got because even a loss is not the end of the world. Whitewater took it heart got the W in a crazy game!!

Also, from what Gard said about talking to the commissioner a policy change might be in the cards to allow games that can't be played as scheduled due to covid to be postponed rather than canceled. I wouldn't 100% rule out a UWSP at UWRF game yet, similar to D1 conferences making that change too.

That being said, 6/8 WIAC games being played tonight is really good IMO considering covid and the snow.

They either have to allow games to be rescheduled or come up with a computer ranking to determine the regular season title.  I am sure more prefer the former.

They don't have to do either of these and didn't in the fall. Their policy from fall is still their policy right now, whether parties agree or not with it given changes with covid.

We gotta go with what we have, until we have change potentially in the future.

Correction: they should allow games to be rescheduled or use computer rankings to determine the championship.

WARHAWKS have added 6'3" Dayne Armwald to the roster.

WARHAWKS: 82
Oshkosh: 78

It was a game of runs.  First the WARHAWKS shoot 61% from the floor in the first half and use a 36-8 run to take a 42-22 lead at the eighteen minute mark of the second half.  Down 57-38 the Titans counter with a 24-5 streak including the last nine points to send the game to OT.  Oshkosh held the early lead in overtime until Derek Gray's basket with a couple of minutes remaining gave the WARHAWKS the lead and 10-11 from line over the last :39 sealed the deal.  Gray was good for a career high 36 and added 7 rebounds, an assist and 4 steals.  Carter Capstran scored 17 points and had 6 rebounds.  Coming off the bench freshman Drew Fisher chipped in with 10 points and 6 rebounds and saw 30 minutes on the floor.

The women also went to overtime and won last night.  Only 11 of 19 rostered players and neither the head or assistant coach were available.

According to the  box score WW scored  20 points in a 5 minute OT was any defense played

10 of the 20 were scored from the free throw line in the last 39 seconds.  Those are tough to defend.  ;)   ;D

That sounds like desperate defense to me.

Sounds like the Platteville EC game with about 3 minutes to go EC started to  press and Shields scored 7 of his 19 points  from the line. Should be a  typical Platteville  WW game next week.

With the NCAA updating their "Recommendations" , will the WIAC be following suit?

How many programs are currently being forced to sit healthy players for 10 days who are routinely testing negative?

Not sure what the WIAC will do about the recent NCAA announcement.

I do know that the WIAC has been pretty coy about their covid protocols to the public. Of note, the loss has been taken away for UWSP and win for UWRF has now been taken away in the standings. The game now says canceled rather than forfeit.

If games aren't rescheduled, that's better IMO than giving teams the wins and losses. Still very confusing on how tournament seedings would be made then.
