Greek Tragedy

Point has their annual pig roast this weekend where they will preview the upcoming season. I presume we'll see a full schedule soon thereafter. Too bad I'm busy this weekend.

Interesting that they cancel the Hope game on Friday, but keep the Calvin game the following day. I'll be able to hit the game in downtown Milwaukee at least.

I heard from someone that the Friday game was cancelled because it was too close to Thanksgiving.

Or maybe there's a Black Friday deal in Central Wisconsin that someone wanted to take advantage of?

It seems crazy that a veteran coach would agree to a game only to cancel after realizing it would be close to Thanksgiving.  I think there are reasons to cancel, but that reason risks putting off MIAA coaches who might otherwise be interested in scheduling UWSP in the future.

Uh yeah, it's not like they changed when Thanksgiving occurs...

Platteville has games at Ripon and vs Mount Mercy (NAIA in Cedar Rapids) in mid November added to their schedule to make 11 non conference games scheduled.

Greek Tragedy

As previously posted, the Pointer schedule is out. Beggars can't be choosers, but it's hardly a mouth-watering schedule of "must see" games. I shouldn't complain too much since Point was a mere 4-17 last year and took the collar in conference play. I suppose our opponents (or cancelled opponents, LOL, that's a joke) may have been looking at us and saying, "Wow, Point? You couldn't schedule a better opponent?"

11/9 v St. Olaf (16-11, 11-9) 5th in the MIAC
We literally play St. Olaf every year, so it's not a surprise we're at it again. I'm not sure what it is, but we seem to open the season against them nearly every year as well.

11/12 v Webster (10-18, 6-8) 5th in the SLIAC (at IWU)
A down year for Webster, but they did advance to the conference tournament final against Blackburn. They return the core of their team, so they could be pretty good (for SLIAC standards, at least). They did upset Wash U. last year as well...before getting smoked in their 2nd meeting.

11/13 at IWU (24-6, 14-2) 1st in the CCIW or v Yeshiva (25-4, 14-2) 3rd seed in the Skyline conf. tourney
Both teams were NCAA tournament teams last year, but both lose most of their studs from last year, as well. I have no doubt they'll be solid opponents, none-the-less, as they seem to reload, not rebuild, at least in IWU's case. With my Hope/Calvin Thanksgiving weekend trip vanished, I may be able to convince the wife to head to Bloomington.

11/19 at Edgewood (11-14, 9-7) 8th in the NACC
This was one of our few wins last season, barely. I'm hoping for a more comfortable win at the Edge Dome this time around. There's a slim possibility I may make it down to Madison for this one.

11/22 v WLC (16-9, 9-7) 6th in the NACC
I don't think we've played WLC very often. It'll be a good home and home series as Milwaukee isn't very far from Point. I would've liked to go to this one (if it was down there) on the Milwaukee/Wauwatosa border as it's close to the Greek church I got married in. I've been down there for other games before and their small student section is fun to watch and listen to their cheers throughout the game.

11/26 at Calvin (22-9, 11-3) 2nd in the MIAA
This one pains me for obvious reasons. I just can't justify driving that far for one game. Calvin was a tournament team last year and I would've loved to see their place. They lose a lot of guys, but should still be a good team.

12/8 v Trine (18-9, 10-4) 3rd in the MIAA
I don't think we've played Trine much in the past, if at all. Trine was one of the best teams during the COVID year but seemed to have dropped off considerably last year. Still a good test against a team that plays Hope and Calvin twice a year.

12/14 at MSOE (9-15, 5-11) 11th seed in the NACC
Another team Point hasn't played much, if at all. I plan to head south to downtown Milwaukee for this one. It's a cool setup down there with the gym and ice rink at the Kern Center and the soccer field basically on top of a parking garage.

12/17 v Superior (10-16, 6-8) 5th in the UMAC
Another staple of the Pointer schedule in the past.

12/21 at Southwestern (9-17, 6-10) 6th in the SCAC
A nice trip to the south, hope it works out better than their cancelled trip out West last year.

12/22 at Trinity (TX) (23-6, 13-3) 2nd in the SCAC
Trinity was a tournament team last year even though they fell to St. Thomas (TX) in the SCAC Final as St. Thomas wasn't eligible for the NCAAs yet.

According to UW Superior's Schedule Platteville's game against Lawrence on 11/11 and the TBD game on the 12th are part of a tournament that will be played at UW Superior.

The-person-known-on-these-boards as KnightSlappy and I launched a D3 basketball youtube show last month (link in the sig) and one of the topics we discussed for this time leading up to the new season is a D3 basketball bucket list. We have been trying to solicit feedback for that via the YT channel and twitter but wanted to put out the call here as well as we know not everyone is connected on those platforms.

We got started with a few items of our own and some feedback from others already but are looking for as much input to consider as possible. If you have a game, venue, event, etc. you think is essential bucket list material for any D3 basketball fan please send me a private message this week and we will be sure to add it to the list. Thanks!

Pretty sure tomt4525 mentioned a few of these already (Faber and Coleman for sure,) but here are a few more transfers heading to Stevens Point for the upcoming season:

According to Mark Miller:

"Transfers with state ties in the Stevens Point men's basketball program include:

Cade Faber (Abbotsford/Knox)
Jason Larson (Mount Horeb/Parkside)
Quintin Winterfeldt (Waupun/Bryant & Stratton)
Myles Coleman (Brookfield Central/Bethel)
Kael Stulo (Oak Creek/Iowa Central CC)"

Will be interesting to see what kind of impact they have next season...

And Cory Marquardt who got fired at Newman, with a decent team, is joining the coaching staff. Interesting choice.
