Mootz named to the all tournament team and Buchanan name tournament MVP. Wow.

Quite the turn around from the St. Olaf game.

Also a message that wasn't helping anything so it's deleted.

Greek Tragedy

Game vs IWU minutes listed first, then St. Olaf

Mootz - 35 min (IWU) - 27 min (St. Olaf)
Buchanan 33 - 31
Timm - 28 - 28
Gille - 25 -19
Genrich - 17 - 27
Van Calster 25 - DNP
Makinen 25 - 12
Coleman - 10 - 23
VanderVelden - 3 - 16

So Makinen and Van Calster were the difference? Less time for VanderVelden and Genrich?

I think it helps making shots. They missed so many layups vs St. Olaf. Mootz and Buchanan were 5-17 vs Olaf and Tim was 3-12. Mootz and Buchanan were 14-23 vs IWU. Timm and Gille were just 2-19.

I thought Coleman played well vs St. Olaf.

Obviously hitting shots matters and that was the only reason Point stayed close in the first half.  Giving more minutes to Makinen and any minutes to Van Calster absolutely helps too.  Semling has routinely played guys that are almost zero offensive threats for years now.  Gillie is not the answer right now down low, he shouldn't be starting.  I'll say he's certainly a better option than giving minutes to Warden.

The injury to Ruder is maybe why Warden and Gillie are getting minutes, i'm not sure on that until Ruder is back and we see the rotation.  Ruder might not be in the rotation at that point either, I will never say with certainty what Semling would do with his rotation.

Van Calster is solid defensively, I watched him hold is own plenty against a 6'10" kid going D1 in high school.  He is also a threat offensively, unlike others.  He proved that with some big shots against IWU.  He needs to be on the floor more.

I wasn't in Bloomington as planned, but I was able to complete the "3 Games in 3 Cities in One Day" trifecta for just the 2nd time in about 15 years.

It was much easier than the Oshkosh to Waukesha to Kenosha trip many moons ago.

We started off at MSOE in downtown Milwaukee to see the bloodbath of the hosts smoking Martin Luther. Honestly, many high school teams could probably beat them. I feel sorry for them, although they played hard and were always trying to compete.

Next up was a short stroll to Wisconsin Lutheran College on the border of Milwaukee and Wauwatosa. The women's game beforehand took forever, so the men's game tipped off nearly an hour late.

I don't know what kind of atmosphere they are trying to accomplish, but all the lights are on for the pregame and then it turns into a movie theater as they shut off all lights except on the court. It was really frustrating.

We only made it a half. Bethany Lutheran looks pretty good and WLC competed well. Checking the final, BLC won comfortably.

Lastly, another short trip to Carroll U in Waukesha. If that area doesn't have the most confusing roads... Dubuque really had their way for most of the game and Carroll has a long season ahead of them. If I'm not mistaken, they are picked last in the CCIW.

The best atmosphere so far in this young season happened on Friday night as I went over to Ripon to see them take on old MWC rivals SNC. Maybe it was the rivalry or the close proximity of De Pere to Ripon, but the crowd was electric with a solid student section and the game was very entertaining. Best priced soda, popcorn and concessions for sure.

If you remember my previous post a few pages back, I mentioned there are 23 D3 schools in Wisconsin. I'm on a quest to visit each school for a men's game this season. 5 down (went to Lakeland's opener vs Lake Forest opening day).

It's my understanding the men are at 5 and the women (vs. IWU) are at 7.  It was set up that way because Hope has a longer drive home afterward.

Hope is Wednesday. I was asking about this weekend, Saturday, vs NCC, North Central IL.

Well, tonight's Pointer Hoops Radio Show had about the least amount of relevant information of any show I've listened to.

Nothing about how long injured players will be out....nothing on the mystery status of Quintin Winterfeldt.

My bad.  I'll try and remember to ask Wednesday and let you know.  Right now I'm just going by what our schedule says.

It's unfortunate Quintin hasn't played because the Pointers would for sure be 3-0 and ranked in top 25 if he were in lineup. He'd be the best player on the floor most games and Van Calster is the real deal and kid who legitimately will have a chance of being an all American one day! If you've watched enough kids play in the WIAC and enough stud high school players it's easy to see when a kid will fit in and dominate and I can't wait to see him going forward he has post moves of Jason Kalsow and the ability to knock down the 3 similar to former Pointer stud Trevor Hass.

I got confirmation that the Whitewater game vs NCC this weekend is at 5 pm, not 7. I'm planning on heading to that game after the Point game in Madison. Should be a great game of Helwig U vs Barnstable U.

1. La Crosse (3-0): Great start for the Eagles. Wins over ranked St. John's, ranked Marietta and a good Guilford team. They head to Wartburg to take on Cornell and Concordia (WI)/Wartburg.

2. Whitewater (3-0) Barnstable U off to a good start with wins away from home against Augustana, Heidelberg and Pitt- Bradford. They probably have the toughest schedule of the WIAC teams this week with games against Hope and North Central (IL).

3. Platteville (2-0) The Pioneers went to Canada and came home with the Superior tournament championship. They beat Lawrence and then the hosts for a nice 2-0 road trip. They head to Ripon this week before hosting Mount Mercy.

4. Oshkosh (2-1) The Titans survive Lawrence, get upset at Calvin and rebound at Hope in the opening week. Doesn't get any easier this week as they travel to...South Dakota?? They play ranked St. Joseph CT and Nebraska Wesleyan.

5. Stevens Point (2-1) The Dawgs stumbled at home vs St. Olaf before routing Webster and surprising the ranked host to take home the IWU tournament. They head to Madison to take on Edgewood in their only game of the week.

6. Eau Claire (1-1) The Blugolds went 1-1 vs MIAC opponents, topping Bethel and then nearly upsetting ranked St. John's on their home floor. Eau Claire heads back to Minnesota to take on St. Olaf before hosting UMAC for Northwestern MN..

7. River Falls (1-0) The Falcons got the road win at Gustavus Adolphus in their only game. Tough sledding this week as they head south of the border. They play John Carroll, who boasts four D1 transfers, and then either play a solid Hanover team or the ranked hosts Wheaton.

8. Stout (1-2) tough to be last in the 1st week as they did get a win vs. Northland before dropping two in Michigan to Calvin and Hope. They'll have some fun this weekend as they take on "System" team Greenville and CCIW member Millikin.
