Looks like no live stream for the press conference. Disappointing. Venne and Hockett's were. Hopefully Manderfeld will have some highlights and coverage because I don't trust anyone else in the local media will.

Are we sure that the AD and coach did not get along?  If that is the case, I would say that I am surprised Semling lasted as long as he did.

It'll be interesting if any current players decide to transfer now that Semling is gone.

If they were there for Sem and only Sem, they would've left already.

Not necessarily. The player may think it sucks that Semling is no longer there, but would still like to see who comes in and make a decision after meeting the new coach, etc. Also, may want to see if Semling ends up somewhere else before entering the transfer portal.

In the same sense, maybe someone who already planned to leave before Semling got fired (Dylan Ruder, for example), could return with a new head coach.

The same individual that shared the finalists with me also mentioned the relationship between Semling and the AD, so believe what you'd like...

Anyway, I would agree with you more often than not but there was one other issue at play here that I'm sure impacted the timeline...  I honestly doubt the timing of replacing Semling and the basketball program getting off of probation at the same time were a mere coincidence. Had the probationary period ended earlier I'm guessing the coaching change would've happened sooner as well?

You can maintain a professional relationship without necessarily being friends.  A number of people have suggested that the timing of this with the sanctions is an interesting coincidence. Around point I have heard more comments related to Scotty Anderson not being named a finalist. From the folks I have spoken with the consensus has been that at the very least this was a PR blunder. That said, I think UWSP got this right.  We're getting a great coach and a better person.  Apparently you really can go "home" again. I'm excited for Kent's return and am enthusiastically looking forward to the direction he takes the program!  Go Pointers!!!

It certainly doesn't make sense to bring in a new coach and immediately saddle them with sanctions like those.

As long as that process dragged on, I'm sure there were plenty of opportunities for bad blood to develop between the UWSPMBBHC and the UWSPAD. I can see where it would be difficult for the AD to balance the HC's (presumed) desire to protect his job and reputation and the AD's (presumed) desire to protect the reputation of the athletic department and the institution. Perhaps bridges were burnt.

I generally believe what I read on the board, but asking results in further perspective.

I understand the notion of retaining the coach until after the sanctions were lifted.  That is one way to handle.

But then again, what if the team had went 18-12 instead of 10-15 this season?  The change would have been much harder to justify.  And if they did not end up with the big time hire...  The AD ends up looking far worse.

The decision could have been made a season ago after the 4-17 record and only one year left on the clock, for example.

Lots of ways to handle.

It's always possible that the UWSPMBBHC's lawyer negotiated this exit with the institution and the AD did not have a say.

I could definitely see that.

While not live-streamed, the video is now posted on the (edited) "announcement will be made Friday" post:

https://athletics.uwsp.edu/news/2023/4/27/mens-basketball-kent-dernbach-named-uwsp-head-mens-basketball-coach-press-conference-friday.aspx

I know it's edited because the first line says: A public introduction and press conference will be held on Friday (April 28) in Marshfield Clinic Champions Hall Room 146 at 11:00 a.m. Parking regulations should be adhered to on campus as classes will be in session.

I'm just watching now, so I may come back with more comments afterwards...

"...and for 6 straight years being the assistant coach under Bob Semling..."

That's the only mention of Semling. Ouch. The old Hot n Now drive thru restaurant (where I once worked) got more mention than a coach that won 325+ games and two National Championships.

I mean, if they didn't say it when he was fired, I'm not sure why they would say it when his replacement is hired...

Program at bottom of the WIAC. A program that prestigious should have never dropped to where it has been. 4-17 (0-12) in 2021-22. Absolutely unacceptable.

You should coach the squad. You seem to be an expert.
