I'm probably in the minority but I felt the Pointer squad that didn't win a conference game two years ago showed a lot of fight/heart on the floor for the most part and let's remember the WIAC top to bottom is top 3 overall D3 conference where the last place team could win several conferences in the nation. Typically if players dislike a coach it really shows with amount of effort you see and most every kid on that team left it all out on the floor. Now is going winless unacceptable per Pointer standards absolutely but they were winless due to extreme lack of talent not because of Semling.

After Dernbach left for UWL it's not a coincidence that the Pointer program went in the opposite direction each year. Lack of talent also has to do with recruiting. Head coaches are responsible for that.

And it's pretty darn difficult to recruit with the sanctions imposed by the NCAA

They had a ban on official visits. Not unofficial. Pointer nation can rejoice once again. Won't take long for this thing to get back to where it should be.

At the Division III level what is the difference between "official " vs "unofficial".  Not being able to pay for their lunch at the cafeteria?

In an official visit, programs can pay for meals, tickets to games, even give spending money for other entertainment.

I found this survey (not just basketball) that asked d3 institutions which of the "official visit" offerings they it's and which they wanted to have changed. I found it interesting.

In short, especially for d3 programs who are competing against d2 organs for players, these extra "official visit" perks help make a player feel like they are a top recruit, target than just someone visiting the university.

Thank you for the link cubs. I'm sure the job will be posted this week. Couple UWL alums in the coaching world who would be great fits. Should be interesting to see who gets in the mix for this.

The WIAC severely limits recruiting benefits.  Recruits can get picked up at the bus stop, one meal on campus, and can stay in the dorms.  Their recruiting rules start on Page 11.

The recruiting should have been better. No question asked. The lifeblood of a program. We're talking UWSP. Not Finlandia.

The job has to get posted. Who would take over in the interim? The full-time assistant took the head job at Ripon College last month.

I think many of the assistants at other schools in the conference would make good head coaches. Life is about taking calculated risks and capitalizing on opportunities.

Juckem was named WashU head coach May 1 2018. We have recent precedent for a job not posting this late. I know Oshkosh had an assistant there, but still.
