Probably already posted and old news by now.

https://twitter.com/CalKrohn/status/1668656439223545857?t=JjSYpszBOKNl9qM6cXWF9g&s=19

That's new, but if you're continuing to use the "it's probably old news" thing every time you post because I made reference to AJ Uttech's commitment to Point in January when you recently posted it....then I'll just let you and other posters break the news, I can use my time elswhere.

I'm just covering my bases in case it was posted earlier. I'm too lazy to scroll back pages and pages to see if it was posted or considered old news. Feel free to post. Don't mind me.

First off, you wouldn't need to scroll back pages and pages....cuz I have done multiple recruiting updates during the offseason, where Uttech's name was on Point's commitment list on each one of them.  Secondly, and the more important thing as to why I referenced my post in January about Uttech's commitment when you made reference to him committing recently is, If you and others on the site don't care about the commitments and who is going where...then I won't post them, it's no big deal to me.  I keep track because I like following the WIAC recruiting and see who should be good moving forward.  If people don't care to see it, then I will keep track of it to myself.

Hey Tom, Paul,
I really appreciate your contributions.

You are among 10 or so people who make the boards worth reading, in my opinion.

But people on the boards are very quick to point out when they got to the recruiting, coaching, scheduling news first.  I am sure I have done it.  Probably human nature, but this does discourage others from posting and surely no one wants that.

Former Lakeland, Platteville, Wayne State and Carroll coach Paul Combs has been hired as the top assistant coach under Kent Dernbach at UW-Stevens Point. Combs has 320 victories during his career.

This seems significant to get Combs as an assistant coach.

Wow. And in related news...

https://twitter.com/WisBBYearbook/status/1668342435565678592?t=sSDHq6ne5Um21INispWY9A&s=19

I'm not sure about the circumstances of Combs leaving Carroll at the beginning of the season last year. He was obviously success at Lakeland and Platteville and even Carroll to some degree (no idea about Wayne State). It's interesting that he decided to take an assistant job at Point. I would think he'd be able to get a head coaching job pretty easily given his track record.

Gotta pay the bills ... and if you're a former head coach who is looking to return to the head-coaching ranks somewhere, taking a job as second chair for a well-supported program in a high-profile league is a sensible way in the interim to pay those bills while staying active in the coaching fraternity.

Those circumstances you spoke of regarding his abrupt departure from Carroll two weeks into last season remain mysterious, so at this point I wouldn't speculate as to how easy it will be for Combs to land another gig as a D3 head coach.

Anyway, the high school will take advantage as well as Mark Miller noted that SPASH will be getting Paul's son.

https://twitter.com/WisBBYearbook/status/1668341326780456962?t=eoyu7p5tjfknANvhYaii4A&s=19

I'm guessing he's a good player, otherwise, Mark probably wouldn't have made note of it.

I have no idea how good a player Carter Combs is, but he might've been a factor in Kent Dernbach hiring Paul Combs to sit second chair. It wouldn't be the first time that a D3 head coach has hired an assistant based at least in part on said assistant's teenage progeny. (I'm assuming that Dernbach has hiring control over his staff at UWSP.) Paul Combs, of course, is a significant asset in and of himself for the Pointers, but, other considerations aside, some head coaches might nevertheless be leery of hiring a chief assistant who is not just a seasoned coaching veteran but a former head coach of long standing and significant past success. You might wonder if he's going to be sending out his résumé to schools looking for a new head coach five minutes after he's settled into the office next to yours.

Of course, it's possible that Dernbach doesn't care either way.

There is still a humongous need for a big man, but if Dernbach can solve that problem before next season, I don't think it would be possible for him to have a better start as the Head Coach at UWSP.  It might take another year, but it certainly looks to me that UWSP is trending back where they were to the national scene of D3 Hoops.

There have been a couple bigs on campus visiting recently.  No "signings" yet that I'm aware of. Let's hope!!

What bigs have been visiting?  Transfers?

Paul Combs has (at least) six years in the University of Wisconsin system from his days as head coach at Platteville. It'd be a little ways to go to get that pension fully vested but that is also a motivator for coaches and administrators as well.

Have to believe J.T. Gritzmacher will be getting that job.

If he does the dominos continue to fall at that point. Opens a very good job in Bryant and Stratton. Funded very well.
