Coach C,

I guess they stopped 3 times just to warm up.

They were plenty hot downing St. Thomas in the first game at Wooster. Then they ran into the home team shooting lights out in the second half.

Mr. Downtown

Hey guys...

those that are interested about the Lawerence/Oshkosh game, you can listen to it on www.uwosh.edu/wrst and just click on the streamming link.

Lawrence upsets Oshkosh 82-75 in overtime.  Not positive of the stats, but I think LU only missed one ft in regulation and OT (probably took at least 12).

I didn't listen to the whole game, only caught the last 3 mins of regulation, the announcer (nice job btw, despite the technical difficulties, one constructive criticism...  give the time esp late in the game when you go to a time out, but you did a great job).

Yanke held to 5 pts, none in the second half... I'll have stats as they come in.

They went to the studio instead of doing the post-game at LU... but the guys in the studio have made some good points: Gibson is "projected" to do well this year, but, right now, he has yet to prove himself.  He has improved, but the jury is still out.

Another point:  Yanke is the one to focus on... he did well in the pre-conference games, but come WIAC time last year, he kind of disappeared.  Tonight... 5 points, all in the first half, none in the second half an OT.  For Oshy to do well, they need him to step up, because Capelle will, in their words, "be double teamed in the corner."

Platteville 74, Edgewood 49  from the scoreboard.  Platteville avenges last year's loss.  I think Edgewood is the favorite in the LMC.  I'm not sure if that says positive things for Platte, or negative things for the LMC/Edgewood, but I think I have an idea...

La Crosse defeated Viterbo 73-63 at the V-Hawks' gym. Again, balance and depth were the keys as the Eagles outlasted their stubborn hosts. After 2 more non-con road games this weekend, the Eagles host Whitewater next Wednesday. That should be interesting.

Oshkosh was outhustled.  Tough D by LU and a few players didn't get their shots in--Jahnke to name one.

It seems the Titans get irritated by the tight D that LU plays every year and make mistakes they usually don't make.  They do okay for a while and then it seems to catch up to them and they force passes, etc.

The LU students were on breaks so the 6th man wasn't there.

This film ought to make TVD sick.  I'd start scheduling someone else instead of LU.

Box Score of the UWO/LU game.

Things that I find interesting...

Kerry Gibsen: 27 points, 7 boards, 7/13 shooting, 13/14 ft's, 6 blocked shots (including 2 in the last two seconds of the game against Braier to send the game into OT)
Andy Jahnke: 5 pts, (none in the second half)

Lawrence made 17/19 in the last 5 minutes of regulation and 5 mins of overtime, after strangely shooting 1/7 in the first half (and they still lead by 6).  Another thing to note... Lawrence shot that 1/7 in the first half, and then didn't shoot another free throw until 5 mins left in the game.

I wrote in the in-game updates that Lawrence lead the whole way... I heard that from the announcers, and it simply wasn't true, Oshkosh lead to start the game, but took their last lead with 12 mins to go in the first half (they, obviously b/c the game went to OT, tied the game).

Lawrence:  21 assists, 11 turnovers
Oshkosh:  13 assists, 15 turnovers

How about this line?

Kyle MacGillis...... 25 points (7/15 from the field, 10/12 from the line, all in the last 5 mins of regulation and OT) 8 assists to 1 TO 5 steals, only 2 fouls.  Very productive, he'd be my player of the game.

Unless you chose Braier........ 20 pts (8/20 form the field) 9 boards, 6 offensive, 6 assists, 2 TO's.

I'm intrigued by this, all told.  Gibson seemed to have his way in this game, yet Oshkosh loses because Capelle (at least partially... 1 for 5 from 3) and Jahnke were held under wraps.  I wonder how Oshkosh will rebound from this... it makes the match-up next Wednesday in Quandt pretty interesting.

Granted... is Oshkosh still the favorite for the conferece?  Yes. (probably)  Is their confidence going to be rattled?  Is there a chink in the armor?  Possibly.

Granted... is Point still young and inexperienced?  For the most part, yes.  Have they had more time to work through some of their early season jitters and wrinkles?  Arguably, yes (they weren't preparing for their first game this past weekend like UWO)  They (SP) had more of a chance to analyze where they were and work out some of those wrinkles.  Now, they do have two games to prepare for after Thanksgiving, instead of just one like Oshkosh, but this will give them even more of a barometer to guage their early season status.

Thanks for posting the boxscore PS (I can't believe this game was being broadcasted, I couldn't find it earlier tonight)...

I've been looking at the Oshkosh boxscore, and trying to figure out what went wrong for them... it looks like Larry just forced a lot of turnovers? Osh has 15 turnovers, 11 of which were steals by Larry. It also looks like Osh didn't have much of an outside game (4-15 behind the arc) so that probably made defense a little easier on Larry? Something like that? Was someone at the game?  ???

Back from the Oshkosh/Larry U game, and also from seeing Wedding Crashers!  I almost missed the budget movie because the game went into overtime!  >:(

Anyway, here are my views.  First off, I was a WIAC fan tonight and came away disappointed.  As a Pointer fan, if this is what the odds on favorite is going to look like, we can all rest easy because Oshkosh was hardly impressive.  With that said, I'm sure they'll improve and show they are a lot better than what they were tonight.

I won't get into any of the scoring or boxscore type stuff too much since you guys can read that yourself...

As many of you regulars know, I've been a big Kerry Gibson critic.  There were several things that I took out of this game regarding him.  At times, he can be a force inside.  I'm not sure why they didn't feed him the ball more.  In the second half, I noticed Larry U doubled him everytime he got the ball, so the guards need to step up and score when that happens (a lot of standing around by the rest of the Oshkosh team).  As you see, it didn't, as Jahnke was basically invisible.  Defensively, Gibson was basically unstoppable, swatting balls left and right (6 blocks).  Offensively, 27 points looks great (13 of 14 from the FT line is impressive for a big guy), but he has to finish better.  The boxscore said he was 7-13, but those misses were bunnies and he needs to finish those close range misses.  He just simply missed them.  A guy that close and that tall, it just seems amazing how he misses them.

As a team, Oshkosh needs to rebound better.  I was surprised to see the rebounding that close.  It just seemed like LU was always there.  At the beginning of the 2nd half, LU had 3 or 4 offensive rebounds off of 3-pt shots in one sequence.  A 7'1" guy has to get more than 7 rebounds.  Oshkosh as a team had a huge size advantage.

If Capelle wants to be a leader, this doesn't mean you have to take all the big shots.  At the end of regulation, when he got the ball in his hands, he launched (in your face) 3-pointers on three or four consecutive possessions (making one), basically not even looking to pass.  He's gotta be more patient, IMO.

Jahnke has to get more involved.  Larry U basically wanted it more and showed they weren't afraid of Oshkosh.  The Titans came out flat and slow.  A lot of their passes from the key to the corners were lazy and were easily stolen.  Oshkosh had a real hard problem with the full court press on inbounds passes, at least once resulting in a 5-second violation.

Kerry Gibson was a force, but he needs help.  Defensively, when he was beat, the help-side defense was always late.  Their 3-2 zone (I think) was slow on getting out to the wings, and they were beaten to a lot of loose balls and rebounds.  Offensively, if teams start to double Gibson, Jahnke and Capelle, among others, need to hit their shots.  Freshman Matt Miller looked real good.

I guess that's enough ripping on Oshkosh.  I was real disappointed in their performance tonight against an inferior Lawrence team.  But, like I said, they wanted it a lot more and deserved the win.  I do want to give Lawrence credit.  They played great defense, hustled and showed more spark.  Braier is a stud.  It's amazing how many rebounds the guy gets being only 6/4".  Along with Braier, MacGillis was the difference.  Oshkosh basically trailed the whole game and were lucky to get it into overtime.

Mr. Downtown

I will say this every time...

Oshkosh season's will determine how well Jahnke plays...period

If he only scores 5 points, Kyle Johnson has a bad game, what help does Capelle have? Actually, what help can Capelle give to Gibson?

Already throughout Oshkosh, Jahnke talks are starting to begin. Which is sad, cause no one deserves as much criticism as he does.

Unfortunely though, he is the scapegoat, and until he starts to show that he is cluch and can bail the team out, he will continue to be.

Another thing, this was Oshkosh's first game. Whitewater loses to Loras or whoever as well. At least Oshkosh didn't blow an 18 point lead...right?

Sports are funny sometimes. A particular team always has a number on another (example, Vikings vs Packers). One team is always better then the other, but somehow the other team always finds a way to win.

Congrats to Lawerence, and don't forget about these guys. Remember, this team isn't too shabby.

Now, let's see how Oshkosh bounces back. Confidence has been an issue with this team in the past. When they are riding high, they are one of the best teams in the nation; when they are riding low....well...you get the picture.

Hey, at least our girls won tonight, 88-23

Pioneerbacker

Good job Oshy!   ;)  Way to stick that #2 rating in everyone's face.  Seriously, it would have been nice to get the win over LU, but that team always finds a way to win.  We all know if the big 3 get hot for Oshy, look out, but I'm excited for this year's conference play.  It's going to be wild!

Good game last night for Pioneers.  They are still playing without Sean Krause, and the new players continue to impress.  There are still a few weak spots, but I think things will come around.  Not to over look Dubuque on Friday, but there's an interesting matchup with Loras on Saturday.   It will be nice to get on a roll before playing Stout on Dec. 3.

Lawrence is a good team, Oshkosh needs to find ways to get Jahnke open looks because he struggles to create shots
