So it looks some people are already sticking the nail in Oshkosh's coffin.  I'm not so sure yet.  Oshkosh may have been overrated and their record may be 1-2 now, but I still think they are a very good team and it's a long season.  They are 1-2, but their losses have been against Lawrence and Point.  It's not like they are playing the Minnesota School for the Blind and Milwaukee Seminary.  Both of these losses were on the road in places that have been recently nearly impossible to win in.  Both of these teams have been very good over the years as well.  So, even with two losses, I think we should cut Oshkosh a little slack here.

I would like to know a little about Point's game tonight.  I see that Rortvedt played 38 minutes!  Wow.  A freshman doing that.  Also, as usual, Hicklin, Krull and Bauer putting in 38, 33 and 35 minutes.  How did El Amin look?  I see he played a lot of minutes as well (21).  Did Point play zone?  They held Gibson to just 8 FGA.  Who guarded him?  I see that Matt Miller played a lot of minutes for Oshkosh.  He's pretty short too.  Was there just a case of matching up with El Amin playing basically the same amount of minutes?  El Amin didn't play much vs. Lakeland, so I was thinking his playing time had to do with matchups.

Hope to make the game on Saturday.

Titan2000,
I don't care what your karma points are, you are good.  That last question about Quant burning given your history with that place is CLASSIC.

Sorry about missing that "d" in Quandt in last post but must have been thinking about our "d' at Zorn last night.  Oops, sorry Pat, I didn't mean "our" d because I'm not suppose to cheer so hard for Stout.  Anyway, Stout really played well last night.  They made a concerted effort to involve their inside people and it was a very disciplined effort on both sides of the ball.  Yes, it is going to be a very long season for EC.

Point played man the entire game and had different matchups against Gibson, including 6'4" Jon Krull (9" height difference). Pressure on the ball outside made it hard to get it into the paint until late in the game when the Pointers played tight against the 3 point shot. El Amin was matched against Miller for the majority of the game and definitely out quicked him with a couple of steals and handled the pressure flawlessly. Oshkosh played quite a bit of zone and it had its moments of effectiveness, but ball movement resulted in alot of open shots.

A blown ballast in a light was the cause of the fire alarm and it didn't come close to burnin' down the house T2K. The Titans were a little crisped after the game however.

Where's laxeagles 1?  I'm sure he's preparing his "Coach Koelbl Epitaph" at the moment.  I thought LaCrosse could win this game at home, but it looks like Whitewater put together a pretty complete game.  How about Point?  Wow.  Oshkosh has some work to do, but I agree with Old School that they'll still be a major player for conference.

Now, on to the Platteville game.  I'm not even going to respond to "nochoresmartin11".  He or she can rant and rave all he or she wants.  PointSpecial, you are right about the online announcers being students, but it would be unfortunate if they were not professional with their broadcast, especially since they are webcasting now.  Our local, professional station does a much better job, still biased, but professional.

It would be "easy" for someone to say Chris Martin plays dirty, but he is one HECK of a ballplayer and he deserves credit for knowing his limits when it comes to certain situations.  Since the refs had zero control of the game, he was given a lot more freedom (so was everyone else).  To his credit, he only picked up 3 fouls.  I really don't know if there's anyone in our league on his level.  Is that WIAC blasphemy?  He is an all-around player.  Although, he knows he's good, if that says anything.

As far as the game goes, Platteville is really fortunate to win this game.  They were up by as many as 8 points late in the game, and Elmhurst climbed their way back into it.  The game would have probably been over but UW-P missed two free throws that would have put us back up by 8, instead Elmhurst took the missed free throws and hit a "3".  The last minute is a blur, though.  We were up by 1 or 2 with probably 40 seconds to go, and one of our players recevied a technical, after he was fouled.  So, Elmhurst hit one free throw, and Platteville hit two free throws.  That was poor judgement on our part, and I hope that gets corrected.  Martin hit another "3" off a rebound and put them up by 1 with about 6 seconds on the clock.  Platteville called a timeout and got the ball in the hands of Mike Jamerson, who was fouled on a three point attempt with 1.4 seconds on the clock.  He made the first two free throws and intentionally missed the third.  The inbounds pass, after a timeout, by Elmhurst hit the ceiling

It was a great college basketball (i.e. football) game and was an important win for Platteville, at home and against a quality ballclub.  I think it's going to be a great game on Saturday against Stout.

I was at the platteville-Elmhurst game.  It was one heck of a game.  Its always a shame to see a game end on free throws, but hey in this situation i will take it.  Chris Martin was ok, but at times, a couple turnovers and a late in the game missed free throw, didnt look like an all american.  I am sure there are WIAC players at his calibar.  Elmhurst was a very good and physical team.  Maybe they played a little bit dirty but for the most part just physical.  I liked their style personally.  Wow i dont know where uwp would be without Jamerson, with him we may be able to contend this year.  Props to point for finding a way to win with only one starter back.

I wasn't at the game so i really can't comment other than that if lax scores only 57 in a game it is gonna be difficult to win, even with their defensive play........i

Pioneerbacker

Thankfully, we don't have to worry about Martin in our league, so I've forgotten about him already.  You're right, he missed one free that was pretty important, but he made some unbelievable plays and shots.  Perhaps Capelle or Jahnke could be comparable.  Oh well, who cares.

laxeagles1, just giving you a hard time b/c you were sounding so positive lately!  Now, we have to listen to LaCrosse misery until they win again ;)

Mr. Downtown

When I look at the stat sheet between UW-Stevens Point and UW-Overated, I noticed one big thing.

Difference in free throws.

Oshkosh out rebounded and shot better then Point. But when the other team takes 15 more free throws then you, and you lose around that amount, you really have to look into that number. I mean, Doedens even fouled out!

Right now, I hate to say it, this team is not as tough defensively as they were last year. And another thing, who is the leader on this team? It seems after Fernholz (who was a great floor leader), no one wants to step up and actually be the leader on the court. Until the Titans find that, no way will their talent match their record.

Funny how that works, the Men's team is struggling, but the Women's team shows promise. Hmmm....

badgerwarhawk

Downtown, did you look close enough to notice the 17-6 turnover thing?  That's enough extra possessions to create the point differential isn't it?

They not only got to the line more often than you (for whatever reason) but they made 23 of 26 attempts.  Getting there is only half the battle.   You don't give them one drop of credit....(Yet, Jahnke is the third best player in the league because Ted said he worked on his game this summer.) ;)

Not to suggest you are using that as an excuse and I don't want to put words in your mouth, but what exactly are you trying to say?

Are you saying free throws were the difference and that's it or are you saying there were homer calls and Point got to the line more or maybe that Oshkosh wasn't aggressive enough to get to the line?

I just want to make sure I understand your view.

From what I gathered, Point really took it to Oshkosh.  They were quicker (possibly drawing fouls), and Oshkosh was playing from behind.  Sometimes they need to foul to stop the clock and do that 3 for 2 stuff.  I wasn't at the game.  In Appleton, Gibson got the line something like 13 times.  They really pounded the ball inside.  From the boxscore, it didn't look like Oshkosh fed Gibson much last night.  Point only had 4 less fouls than Oshkosh, with Krull and Grusczynski both with four fouls...and they did take 21 of their 26 FTs after the break.

Chris Martin was OK? I don't know about you but I guess 10-15 shooting and 4-6 from deep and 7-8 from the line for 31 points is OK in your book...Wait and he hit two 3's in the last minute for Elmhurst to even have a chance last night. I guess OK players score 31 against your defense every night??? Maybe your used to seeing that every night. I think some others will agree with me on the fact that Chris Martin is one hell of a basketball player. I guess he didn't deserve that all-american award last year after leading his team to 2nd in the CCIW and leading in 3 major statistical categories (points, rebounds, and steals).  ???
