Yes, that's why they changed to double headers.  That's the only reason, I know most if not all of the men's coaches don't like it (especially the travel with the women's teams).  Not trying to be sexist in anyway, but there is a different approach to preparing for games between men and women.

Point over Northland 84-59.  Point led 34-33 at the half before Bauer came out and hit 3 3's and 3 ft's in the first couple of minutes in the second half.  Bauer ended up with 22, I think 6 3 pointers) but it was raining 3's for all the Pointers in the second half.  Krull got 19, Rortvedt had 12.

This same Northland team lost by just 5 AT Stout and by 7 at Superior earlier this year.

BTW, no Steve Hicklin or Kevin Grusczynski for this game (both were out with injuries, Hicklin hurt his hip @ LaX and Grusczynski twisted his ankle in practice).

Greek Tragedy

As PS pointed out, Point tops Northland.  Point started three freshman as Al-Amin started in place of Hicklin and Beamish started for Kevin Grusczynski, who is also a freshman.

I thought it had more to do with all the waiting around the men's teams had to do, since they usually played after the women.  Games are at 3 and 5 and they problably get there around 1 (for example).  That means the men have to wait around for four hours.  Of course, PS, you would know better than me!  ;)

Just weighing in on the current topics here:

Homer pick, but who I'd like to see with the ball in his hands in the final moments is Sherm Carstensen.

Honorable mentions would be Bennett, since he is a pure shooter and hit a lot of clutch shots for the Pointers. And Melzer, too, since he could score from anywhere on the court, and from the parking lot, too, if he had to. ;)

The person who hasn't been mentioned yet, though, is Jason Kalsow. He might be the most dangerous, since he was a big-time assist player, too. When doubled, he could dish it off to the open player.

Regarding the doubleheaders - I've seen what a pain in the rear end it is for players who have traveled and lost the first game to have to sit around for four hours while waiting for the second game to finish... I'm sure they would much rather just hop on the bus for the long ride home, rather than postponing the agony...

I guess the only cure would be to win that first game, so they can sit back, relax, and watch the second game. ;)

Regarding the doubleheaders, it was considered a money saving proposition proposed by the administration and opposed by most coaches right from the get go.  I asked Jack Bennett about his reaction to doubleheaders this morning on our Sports Saturday show and his reaction was what I knew it would be:He hated it and for good reason.  He talked about how difficult it was to prepare knowing that the long wait, either before or after your game.  He made the point that this decision should have been made with the student/athlete in mind and it wasn't.  Our head coaches cooperate very well with each other and it is still a very tough siuation for everyone.  Last Sat. was a good example.  We ride with the teams and when they eat, when they stop, when they get home and the mind set of two seperate programs is made even tougher when one team wins and the other loses.  Not fair to either, in my opinion.  A bad idea that is not worth the few dollars it saves.

UWO pulls one out of their "you know what" tonight and wins 70-69 at Carroll.  UWO down by 4, scores a 2 with 13 seconds left.  Carroll misses 1-in-1 and then Janke hits a 3 with 2sec. left.  The guy who ended up missing the 1-in-1 for Carroll (Drury) had this for shooting stats:

9-12 (FG-FGA)
5-7 (3FG-3FGA)
10-11 (FT-FTA)
33pts

His only miss at the line led to Janke's game winner.

Gibson with 23pts 9reb
Capelle with 17pts 8reb
Janke with 11pts

hey I have a question for a UWSP fan, wondering what ever happened to Gordy Zastrow, I see he was listed on the preseason roster in the WBBY, but saw them play a few times this season, and  he was a no show on the roster.
Also am I the omly one that thinks Janke ruins the chemistry for the Titans? I think he takes way too many  bad shots and the other players, especially Capelle seem to stand around too much on offense, I saw the Stout game and seemed to sense some frustration there with his teammates. They should be better than their play of late. I understand he had a game winner tonight, didnt get to that game at Carroll. Kicking myself but was at MU_USF this afternoon, had to relive the memories of the 70's and 80's with those great programs. Appreciate the input and info

I'm not 100% positive, but he IS on the roster, but he doesn't have a uniform number.  Now, he could be one of the next 3 (as they are listed on the roster) because UWSP doesn't dress more than 15 ever (they've only got 15 uni's per set... but that's the number for NCAA games anyway).  I DO know that Shawn Lee is hurt (ACL) and I believe I heard Coach Semling talking about Shawn and Gordy, saying they were injured and possibly returning (he seemed more sure about Gordy... there was a possibility Shawn would opt for a medical redshirt, according to Semling).  I have absolutely no idea the nature of his injury (I'll take a wild guess and say he somehow injured some part of his body, as opposed to his psyche, or ego, and that's why he was out, but I really don't know :P).

Point has the next week and a half off, but then they hit it hot and heavy, playing 6 games in 11 days (3 gms at Clarke tourney, Viterbo, back up north to Superior, then home against Stout).  Hopefully the team can get healthy over this short break.  One thing about young teams is that lots of times the kids don't have the stamina for an entire season (this isn't just going from high school to college... look at rookies in the NBA and how often THEY get injured too).  Point has been playing well, I just hope they can keep it up and can keep from catching the injury bug for the rest of the year!

Hey Point Special, just getting used to this forum, but thanks for the swift info. Im a huge d3 fan, get to games all over the state, saw Point play at Lakeland, was real impressed with Krull and Bauer, guard play seemed a bit week, hoping they pull it together as I really like Semling and wish him well. Also is the big kid from Wisconsin Dells ( Donner? ) goint to play hoops now that football is done? About your comment on Zastrow, seems like you may know him as well. I played with his father years ago, Im guessing the young man has some issues.

Hey Point Special,
Need spell check, I meant Dorner from Baraboo, shame on me. Also what is coach bennett up to, I see his son is an assistant with the team

bcbbball & ps,

Zastrow's eligibility is the question.  Not sure about how it worked out but in transferring apparently not all was as it should be.  He's fine physically but they have to get the credits straightened out.
Dorner had several sports hernia's and was operated on back in September.  He is experiencing some pain yet so the doctors won't clear him.  They are hoping he might be back in a few weeks but even then he won't be in any kind of shape.  At best he could spell for a few minutes.  So, do you waste a year of eligibility for what might be five minutes a game in the second half of the season?  Not like the Dogs couldn't use a guy of his size.  Then again, they are playing pretty well without him.  We'll see what happens.

WHITEWATER[/color] crushes Haskell Indian Nation 98-49.  Manchester and Machnik led the team with 13 points apiece.

Haskell was a late replacement made necessary when Beloit College, who previously had committed to play a game, backed out late in the summer.  It late enough that finding a replacement wasn't easy and this team was coming to Wisconsin to play Oshkosh.  They recruit in Wisconsin and wanted the exposure.   It was, to a large extent, them or no one for us.

The game was played in a junior high gym on the Onieda reservation because that was the nicest one available.   At least Oshkosh got them to play in the barn.  ;D

Gordy has eligibility questions.  As stated previously, he needs to get that straightened out.  Doctors haven't given Shawn clearance yet.  Both are up in the air for 2nd semester.

Nice show again Stoutguy, on Saturday.  Missed the first couple minutes of Bennett's interview.  Computer froze!

Looks like Oshkosh didn't have as easy of a time as Whitewater did and barely got by Carroll, though they are a pretty solid team and should challenge Lawrence for the MWC title.
