Wow what a game at the Quandt tonite. Young Pointers came thru with the "W" after Stout rallied to tie it up after being down by 14 in the 2nd half. Stout has an impressive team and will be right there near the top of the standings at the end of the season. Winning on the road in the WIAC is tough and they almost came thru in the toughest venue in the league. Brian Bauer was awesome tonight and he needed to be. His 4 point play in the second OT was the game breaker and you could almost see Stout droop after that. Coach Semling gambled quite a bit at the end of the game and the two OT's, not substituting at all. There are some good players on that bench and he need to have confidence (and give the players some) and use them in big games. 27 going on 28 with EC in town on Wednesday!!

WHITEWATER 76, River Falls 65

WHITEWATER led by as many as 11 points with seven minutes remaining in the first half before River Falls closed the gap and the half ended 34-31 WARHAWKS.  The game stayed close through the early stages of the second half but WHITEWATER made a run and opened a 15 point lead midway through the half.  RF didn't get closer then ten after that.

Jeremy Manchester led the way with 22 points, including 6-8 from beyond the arc.  Anthony Mlachinik was 4-6 on three-pointers and scored 16 points while Melvin Williams contributed 15 points and Gio Riley another 10 points.  The defense came up with 12 steals as WHITEWATER won the turnover battle 10-19. River Falls won the rebound battle, 34-27, but ]WHITEWATER took 13 more shots in the game.

Titans win 68-58 and never trail in this game, but they couldn't put the Blugolds away.

Golds' pull to within one, 56-55, with 1:30 left...but Capelle hits a deuce, and is fouled on the play, too.

And then, for someone who is more animated and vocal than most coaches, Coach Gibbons quietly gets a T, discussing the foul on Capelle... So, he hits three FTs, to put the Titans up 61-55...

Not sure what the T was about? Gibbons was not animated nor cussing up a storm. Seems like he was quietly pleading his case that there wasn't a foul. But he must have said the magic word...

It was such an unusual T, in that it didn't seem like the crowd was aware one was called. Ref was quick with his whistle as Gibbons walked away, and no one knew it happened....

Had the 'Golds fans realized it, they would have been more vocal, booing the refs, I'm sure... But the crowd was quiet, too. Just one of the more unusual Ts I have seen, I guess...

Hey bulk 19, were you at the game or what?  Gibby was on the refs the whole 2nd half and when the foul was called sending Capelle to the line, the ref came to the table to announce the foul.  Gibby was going crazy, the ref put his whistle in his mouth [which should have been a clue to stop] and when Gibby continued, he raised both hands ready to call the T in an effort to tell him to sit down and when he continued, the T was called.  Not too smart on his part as the Titans pulled away after that.  UWO is still not firing on all cylinders, but they are starting to put it together.  When Capelle and Gibson imerge from their slumps, they will be a force.  Wednesday vs Lax will tell a lot.

Not really sure what to think about Eau Claire.  They hang with Whitewater, and the Warhawks get by them late, they hang with Oshkosh, and Oshkosh slips by.  They're right there with La Crosse, and La Crosse gets it done late.  I thought this Eau Claire team wasn't supposed to be decent by any stretch of the imagination because of all the veteran players quitting.  Can anyone in EC comment?

By no means would a team be very excited about a 1-4 record in conference, but for them to be IN 4 out of the 5 conference games they've played, and against teams in the top half of the conference just surprizes me, espcially with what was reported about the state of affairs in EC.

I was at the LU/Ripon game on Saturday but ther was alot of talk amongst the D3 fans there as to what was wrong with Oshkosh.  I take a lot of heat on that as a fan of the Titans.  I wanted you to tell me what I am supposed to say when asked--these are some options I've considered instead of just shrugging my shoulders:

1) The early ranking was the result of the chancellor ranting the D3 Hoops folks in an effort to promote the university,

2) The third straight loss to Lawrence was so devastating that TVD hasn't been to a practice since and the assistants are running the team except at games,

3) The Titans are waiting until February to gel and spending practice time at the library to make sure they make good grades,

4) The Titan cheerleaders are just not getting it done.

Help me to understand this 2005/2006 Titan team.

T2K,

You forgot to blame the band and the people running the  concession stand.

Point Special-

EC is playing a little better than I thought they would.  Some reasons for this are:

1.  EC plays a gimmick defense that teams aren't used to seeing.  They play a 3/4 court zone press and continue playing zone defenses in the half court.  A lot of teams have struggled with this, especially in the first few minutes.  I know I have gotten on Gibbon's case, but I will give him and his staff some credit (I still think he doesn't work very hard on recruiting and makes too many excuses) by switching things up on defense (Gibby has pretty much used the same defense and offense during his EC tenure).  Since EC has smaller players, the zone press allows for them to use their speed and quickness.  If this team played 1 on 1, they wouldn't be nearly as effective.

2.  EC players are playing hard.  Players are hustling around the court.  This could be the "hardest" playing EC team I have ever seen.

3.  The play of EC point guard Zac Ryan.  I thought entering the season that the point guard position would be a joke (they lost Archy and Breidenbach to graduation).  This guy plays a good floor game and can also shoot, even with a defender on him.

As a big EC fan I have to give Gibbons credit I did not even expect for them to compete in conference games this year with the players that they have, but like buf said these guys are all over the floor working hard playing tuff D, its like they are taking the us vs the world role and seeing what they can do with it, I expect to see them upset a few teams this year. They have two solid players in Ryan and Bardon both are sophmores and the bottom line is Gibbons needs to recruit better if he wants to be at the top of the WIAC

i believe EC's roster has 1 senior (who does not start) and the rest are soph's and freshmen. they are young and competeing for playing time. at this time there is not a lot of talent, there fore, playing hard and working hard and hustling all the time should generate a lot of competion for playing time. the more they play the better they will get. they may not be winning but they are playing hard and giving 100+%. any coach will tell you WORK HARD + PLAY HARD = WIN sooner ar later. if EC does not give up on themselves they will have success eventually.  IMO   (i.e. lacrosse) ;)

this the same guy that the announcers in lax were complaining about traveling everytime he touched the ball?  once this 'catches on' within the officials it will be hard to remain affective except off the dribble.......

that happened to marcus conigliaro last year with his initial first step to the hoop, he has since corrected it but it was a pain in lax's ass last year when the officials caught onto this 'marginal travel' by marcus...........hopefully the same doesn't hold true for Ryan

Hoopshead -

Yes, I was at the UWEC/Oshkosh game. And Coach Gibbons was on the refs the whole game, as was TVD... Nothing unusual about that, and I don't think it was happening any more than usual, either.

It's just Gibbons is more animated than most. And as I was watching them at the table (they had backs to me) I didn't see an animated, heated discussion, and couldn't read lips... Didn't see the ref's cue, the whistle in to his mouth, either.
But as I watched it, I thought Gibbons was relatively calm, compared to how he and other coaches can get...

Without having the benefit of knowing exactly what was actually said all night between them all, nor what the magic word was, I thought the ref had a rather quick whistle, during a key moment of the game... Just let them play...

He's got a team that is working just as hard as the others in the league, and wanted the refs to know that... I heard him make that comment to them a couple of times...

And he was playing the refs, too, reminding them that the stars/senior players from the opponent shouldn't be getting preferential treatment over his younger ones...
