I have to agree with Titansrus about Pete.  He did not have his best outing against Lax.  He is normally very steady on both ends and will make those 2' shots 80% of the time.  His contributions go far past the court time as he is a very good leader.  Being the only member left of the elite 8 team, he knows what it takes to be sucessful in the WIAC and in the tourney.  Pete is a great kid and will be missed immensely when he is done this year.

Hmm, I remember getting bashed for the Warning comments early in the season, good to see that he's the player that I knew he was :)

BDB--good story about Eddie.

Were you there for the RF game? What was your take on it?

Hi Fred,

Yes I was there. The BlueDevils played very uninspired ball. Just seemed like a general lack of enthusiasm and rythm, other than John Nonemacher who I thought played well. Very poor shooting from the guard position. I think that Chaisson, Stangl and Chandler ended up in the low 30 percent area for shooting. Stout won't win if those guys don't score better.
On the other side, Coach Bowen had the Falcons ready to play and kept getting great looks at the basket. Hans Hoag doesn't need the great looks like he was getting and he just lit it up. I think River Falls is better than people give them credit for.
Big doubleheader at Johnson Fieldhouse today. Should be fun. I think the men's team will crank it up this time.

Greek Tragedy

Good story on Coach.  Missed this morning's show, hope it went well and Coach Bennett was his usual animated self!

Good to see Point get a little breather this weekend.  Wednesday's game was their 7th in 15 days, so it's nice to get the batteries recharged for the 2nd half of the conference season.

The biggest game is at Johnson Fieldhouse tonight as Stout, and the rest of that league, for that matter, hope to get the win over the surging Warhawks, who have won 9 in a row, or something like that.

If Stout can't pull it out and Oshkosh is upset in River Falls, a big gap will start forming between Whitewater and Point, and then the rest of the league.

I know Stout beat Whitewater, so Point vaults into a tie with WW for the conference lead, and they got to sit at home to do it!

Saturday, Jan. 14 Game Results:

La Crosse 79 (19 picks)
Superior 62 (1)

Oshkosh 55 (20)
River Falls 49 (0)

Platteville 66 (20)
Eau Claire 60 (0)

Stout 78 ( 8 )
Whitewater 73 (12)

Just a repost (from you!) from the pick-em page.  3 seemingly no-brainers and one close one.  I know Stout was up by at least 20 at one point in the second half of that one.  The Oshy/RF and Platte/EC games look closer than I would have imagined they would be.  Anybody see them?

Point and OS,

You guys look lonely. Nice win for the Devils last night. The game wasn't as close as the final score showed. Whitewater was firing up desperation 3's at the end and making some unbelievable moon shots to make it seem closer.
Stout also did a lousy job of shooting free throws at the end . The game should have ended up about 90-73 if they hit their normal free throws.
One crazy fact of the game: Whitewater scored 37 points in the first 30 minutes of the game, and 36 points in the last 10 minutes.
Sounds like the Oshkosh-River Falls game had a wild ending. And with a couple T's on the Falcons at the end makes it sound controversial.
Looking forward to hearing about it from someone who was there.

From listening on the radio,

EC-Plat play even for the first 15min or so.  Then Plat goes on a big run at the end of the first half and the beginning of the 2nd.  Platt eventually puts the lead up to 17, but then EC hits a bunch of shots in a row to cut the lead to 3.  Platt puts the game away with 6 quick points.  Ryan(EC) makes a long 3 at the buzzer to end the scoring.

Crawford leads UWP in scoring.  Bardon and Ryan lead EC.

Game

I

Have

EVER SEEN!!!   :o

Thanks to Coach Bowen, who exploded after it looked one of his players pushed off on the last second shot (which went in, and would have gave River Falls the lead with 4 seconds left), but...after TWO technical fouls, Jim Capelle had the chance to make 6 free throws in the end. He only made 5, but with only 4 seconds left...its impossible to make up 6 points.

Oh well...a win is a win. But seriously...the worse game I have seen.

Mr. Downtown

With the midway point of the conferece season coming up...its now time...

FOR THE CONFERENCE TOURNEY SEEDINGS (if the season were to end...)

Same thing I did last year, so from now on after each day of games...I will put out the new seedings in the conference...to give an idea to all those where teams are in the conference...and depending on who teams play, gives a good perspective about teams chances of winning the tourney.

BDBOb – I stopped by from MIAC land for my 2nd annual visit to Johnson fieldhouse to watch UW-Stout play.  Although you had a nice crowd, it was quite different from a year ago when the place was packed to the rafters & the atmosphere was electric for the game against Stevens Point.

When Stout can get the floor spread & move the ball around for little Chandler to work his magic, Stout's tough to beat.  Ball movement & player movement was key to Stangl getting his open looks.  It also helped Chandler get his points later on & dropping the dimes to Nonemacher et al in the post.

Both offensively & defensively, the Nonemacher twins seem to have improved considerably from last year when I saw them play.  Out of curiosity does Andrist normally start John over Jake Nonemacher?  Jake seems to be the better of the two players.

It still amazes me that Stout can be as successful as they are with basically a "small" lineup.  Obviously having a couple of 7 footers having your back helps tremendously on the defensive end, but I don't believe they're ever on the floor together at the same time.  Otherwise you go 7 foot, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 & 5-9.   Farmer is a tremendous physical specimen at 6-3 & Chaisson is a great leaper at 6-1, but still in the burly, physical world of the WIAC?  I'm impressed.

In spite of their size, I thought Stout did a good job of keeping the larger Whitewater team from getting inside on them.  BDB you were right about some of the shots WW took toward the end of the game - they were gifts from the three point shooting gods.  Williams hit a couple of (some would call them blind luck) treys that were incredible!

WW struck me as a team that you're not as impressed with their individual players so much, but the total team they put out on the floor.  The team that showed up yesterday seemed to be ever so slightly out of sync & a half step slow.  From a quick scan of your conference stats it seems my theory might be correct.  WW appears to have all the necessary pieces to make a run for the league title as well as 3-4 other teams.  I'll be keeping an eye on your conference race as it develops the balance of the season.  Good luck to all.

La Crosse dispatched Superior with a workmanlike 79-62 win over a game but overmatched 'Jackets squad which has 9 freshmen on its roster. Marcus Conigliaro led the way with a stellar shooting night, and Billy Kegler stepped up with a 4-5 shooting effort in 19 mins. off the bench. Continued development of Kegler's skills will be vital for next season, when the loss of Owen and Bemis will leave the front line a tad thin. Most impressive last night, however, was Leonard Cobb of Superior. He outscored Joe Werner 21-11, and had 8 boards to Joe's 3. An impressive showing. I got to talk to Mr. Cobb briefly after the game, and found him to be an impressive person as well. Superior is having a tough year, and is not well represented on our board, but Mr. Cobb deserves to be better known.
