This guy's posting from UWRF, though, not Stout, so it is probably a different person.

Rich Melzer will be playing for Orlando in one of the NBA's summer leagues.  You can see the rosters and some information at:
http://www.nba.com/magic/news/06summerleague_rosters.html

According to a New Zealand report, Melzer has signed a 2-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs.  No confirmation from SA media, tho.

Agreed. Strange though how both posts came from an on-campus computer.

Thanks Pat.

SA media confirms:

The Spurs have signed rookie forwards Rich Melzer and Jamar Smith.

Only a small percentage of each player's minimum-salary contract is guaranteed, so both will essentially be trying to make the team in training camp in October.

Greek Tragedy

I think a site called d3hoops.com has also confirmed Rich Melzer's signing to San Antonio.  ::)  You might want to head over to that site and see what their sources are first though! lol.

Congrats to Rich Melzer.  Though not guaranteed, I hope things work out well and he's able to keep his roster spot.  I would love to see him come into a game on national television!

I was watching ESPNEWS and they had some news and notes on NBA transactions, yet I didn't see anything on Melzer! What the heck!  ;D

I got a glimpse of UWEC's schedule today.  Non conference opponents along with last years record are listed below:

Manchester Tourney
vs. Alma(10-16)
vs. Manchester(9-16) or Eureka(4-22)

@ St. Mary's(9-16)

@ Northland(4-21)

vs. St. Scholastica(17-10)

@ Finlandia(5-15)

UWEC Holiday Classic
[Wartburg(19-6), Finlandia(5-15), Marian(10-17)]

vs. Finlandia(5-15)

Can you say "cake schedule?"  Gibby has outdone himself this year.  Instead of just scheduling Finlandia 3 times (assuming they play them the Holiday Tourney) like last year, he adds the likes of Northland, St. Scholastica and Marian, not to mention the teams in the Manchester tourney.  IMO, the only team that might give them a little trouble would be Wartburg.  But I guess their top 3 players just graduated this past year.

Greek Tragedy

Wow, that's pretty sad! lol.

What's up with Finlandia?  Do they have some kind of agreement that they have to play them at least two times a year for eternity?  I realize Eau Claire is in the far west side of the state, but so is La Crosse and Stout, who usually put together a solid nonconference schedule!  Too bad Alma (Great Lakes), Manchester (are they within 200 miles?), Eureka, and Finlandia don't count as in-region games (I think!)

St. Mary's, Northland and St. Scholastica count since they are in the West Region.

Long gone are the days when UWEC was getting ripped for bringing in jucco "ringers." Now they get ripped for a cupcake schedule... Ha. If they run the table on non-conference games, they might have a shot at a .500 season... Ha.

As a Blugold alum, I'd much rather face the critics about the ringers in the past, though.

Oh, the pain, the pain, we Blugolds, who are used to Kenny Anderson's teams, are feeling, minus the Sherm Carstensen-led team from 2000? You'd think I'd remember the year, since it's the only good season in how many now???...

Rich Melzer is probably pretty tired.  He played in two games for the Orlando summer league team on July 10 and 11 - starting both.  First game he was a forward against New Jersey.  Had 10 points and 2 boards in 18 minutes, losing 86-82.  In the second game, he was a guard in an 80-79 win over Indiana.  He had 5 points and 2 rebounds in 24 minutes.  I don't think the positions are accurate.  The other "guard" was James Augustine from Illinois.  You can check out that summer league at:
http://www.nba.com/magic/news/06summerleague.html

Then he signed with the Spurs (not guaranteed) and started in their first two summer league games on July 14 and 15.  First game he was listed as the center, second game a forward.  He had 9 points and 6 boards in 25 minutes in the first game, a 79-71 win over Dallas.  Second game he had 15 points and 3 boards in 26 minutes in a 73-70 win over Seattle.  That league is at:

James Augustine will never make the NBA at the guard position.  ;) ;D

Good luck to Melzer.  It would be great if he could catch on.

Manchester is in northeastern Indiana, OS. The Spartans won't be within 400 miles of Eau Claire, let alone 200, until transporter technology is invented and becomes sanctioned by the appropriate NCAA committee.

The Blugolds made it to the national championship game in March of 2000. That's not exactly ancient history. You should try taking ginkgo biloba supplements to enhance your memory function, Bulk.  :D  ;)

Jerry Augustine played guard in an NBA summer league game? Are they playing those games on Bizarro World?

I wish Melzer the best of luck as well.

He does remember the year, I believe -- he mentions it in that very clip.

I got the impression from his post that he knew it was in this decade, but that he couldn't remember the exact year. Hence, "you'd think that I could remember the year ...".

Clumsy wording but could be read to say he does remember it. I interpreted it as "You'd know I remember the year."
