Isn't Markesan right in the middle of the Horicon Marsh  ???

Actually it's not really very close to the Horicon Marsh.   As the crow flies it's about 20-25 miles from the middle.    As cars drive, it's further.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the only way they can "greyshirt" is if they are "cut" from the team and no longer practicing.  If they are listed on the roster, I believe the "greyshirt" wouldn't be available.

I suppose if they aren't listed on the roster a month from now, and they aren't "practicing" they would be eligible for the "greyshirt" though.

If I understand it, they can practice with the team up until the first regular season game, and then not practice or do any official team functions.  Maybe Point Special can fill us in on this.

My understanding is that any practicing with the team once official practices have begun would constitute (now illegal) redshirting rather than greyshirting, but I've been wrong on the rules before! ;)

As I understand the stating of the rules... a player does not use up a year of eligibility until they take part in ANY team function on or after the first day of competition (this would include a team meeting before the game, pregame meal).  So that means that, technically, someone could practice with a team all the way up until the first competition and not lose a year of eligibility.  This can, effectively, mean about a month and a half worth of practice with the entire team.

... It also means that a player may feel like they are being strung along for a month and a half when there is no intention of having them suit up with the team.  Having been with the program and being currently close to individuals still with the program, I believe that this is not a practice that Coach Semling and his coaching staff will partake in.

As far as carrying 20 on the roster, Point has kept this large a number for many years, this isn't anything new.

Mr. Downtown

sorry cubs, seeing that I also do more then just cover the front page stories of the WIAC (Women's Soccer and Women's Volleyball) recently with all the tournament stuff, that I didn't go into a investigation mode of Bryce Welch.

First, Welch had a very nice, big profile picture in the Oshkosh Northwestern during the summer. So the hype was already on in Oshkosh, and let's face it, its tough for people in Oshkosh to believe any hype from the Titans, especially what happened last year.

Also, in my findings about him, it did state that Winona State was interested.

And...everyone is being told that he went there. Did he go to Winona St.? You know what...I don't care anymore. Good luck Bryce Welch, I wish the best.

I just want to know the top 25.

BBall Coach

I think we are in the midst of scrimmage season, correct? I know UWSP scrimmaged Parkside already. I do not know specifics, so if anyone has heard anything on the early season, fill a guy in, would ya!

Barring a miraculous intervention by Ralph or Pat, I'll accept your understanding of the rule.  My interpretation didn't FEEL right - if a team makes cuts in, say, the fifth week of practice, it would be quite unfair to a 'cuttee' if they therefore lost a year of eligibility, despite no further contact with practices!

So I hope you are right and I was wrong! ;)

Yes he did go there, however he is not on scholarship.  He is finishing out the 1st semester at UWO, and then transferring to WSU, where he will redshirt this season.

As a former athlete myself, I don't think there has been a time, regarding myself, where I've felt I've been "strung along".  I think the first month or month and a half, for the freshman, is more of a "tryout" and you have a chance to make the team.  So, these players put forth the efforts in hopes of making the "final cut" and possibly getting some playing time.  If Coach Semling conducts his preseason workouts and practices like this, I'm sure he informs all players that not everyone will make the team and then they have the option of "grey shirting" once the season begins.

Practicing with the team for the month or so also gives these recruits a feel of how things work in program and gets them familarized with all the things that go on.  Even if a player doesn't make the team and is disappointed, I can only think it's a positive experience for them.

Coach Semling could also point out a couple of recruits and walkons and tell them immediately that the staff has no intentions of playing them this year so they know from the get-go on their status.  Even if a player is told this, he still may want to participate in the preseason stuff to get a "head start" for next year.

Anyone know when the Purple/Gold game is? Point Special?  BBall Coach?  BanditUWSP?

Greg,

Unless my services are needed to give Voice a ride from the hospital to the football game I expect to be at the scrimmage.  Right now that's a little up in the air but if I am at the scrimmage I'll be more than happy to post my impressions of North Park.

Thanks!

The WARHAWK men had their intrasquad scrimmage last night and from the looks of it we will field a very competitive team.

One surprise newbie to me was ex-Elkhorn HS athlete, Brian Earle.  I always thought Earle would be an excellent WIAC hoops player but his initial interests took him to Winona State to play football.  Not sure why he chose to return but  he should be a contributor this season.

Looking forward to the North Park scrimmage this Saturday.

Yikes, Oshkosh is a scorekeeper's nightmare.  They have 3 guys wearing two different numbers and FOUR guys wearing #20.  I hope there's a series of typos in there somewhere.

(That's going to have to be a really big jersey to get four guys into it at once.)
