Old School:

I suspect there will be seats.  The temporary bleachers (which added like 300 seats) became more premanent last year as the community has really started to come out more for the LU games.  Mike Woods at the Post Crescent has done a nce job of profiling the team and its coaching staff.  While its nice to write about with a magical season like 2005/06, I suspect he'll find just as many good stories in 2006/07.   Tharp has such a class program and the guys are just top shelf guys.   Over the past several years its been interesting watching the high GPA pre-med, pre-law and biology majors play some pretty good hoop, too.

The place to cure that illness  ;) you spoke of is the Wooden Nickel on College Ave., just west of the LU campus, its definitely the unofficial watering hole of LU Hoops.

This is a new T2K record for "most consecutive words typed without a potshot at UWSP."  Congratulations, you may be turning a corner.

According to Pville's web site, the Pioneers stayed with Purdue for the 1st half trailing only 30-28.  Of course a BBall game is 2 halfs & Purdue showed up after halftime and won 78-46.  All & all a good experience for UWP

Re small private versus large public.

I attended a small private college in another state and worked for them for eight years.  I think that many private colleges are able to play games with scholarships.  Since the cost of attending them is so high, most of their students qualify for scholarships.  I believe that my alma mater did that in the sixties and seventies.

Also, Luther College in Iowa has a very nice athletic complex.  Central College has a decent one too, but not a palace.

I once caught a nasty case of gastroenteritis at a Mexican restaurant. And, no, I never went back. But I didn't incessantly whine about it to everyone within earshot, which is essentially what you've been doing with your one-man crusade over the past year and a half to both turn that seating contretemps into Pointergate and to slip it into every conversation in this room and the MWC's at the drop of a hat.

That is patently untrue. It's a matter of simple arithmetic; most D3 private schools have neither enough endowed scholarships nor enough money in the annual budget to award scholarships to most of their students. Financial aid money can be plentiful at a lot of D3 privates, but the grants and scholies given out tend to only be partials -- and when I say "partials", I'm talking about a fraction of an overall school cost that can be anywhere from $20,000 to $35,000 a year. Most students at D3 private schools take out huge student loans that they then spend 10-15 years paying off once they come due.

T2K,

I don't know about recently, but I do know that Carroll didn't exactly pack it in 4 years ago.  When we went down there there was plenty of room for more fans with just 412 attending the game.  That was the only time we went down there, but I didn't get the feel that they EVER really packed it in...  Of course, things can change in 4 years... I remember that there were considerably more people there for the Larry U/Carroll game that sealed the MWC title for LU, but that was a conference clinching game... this is the first non-con game of the year, whether it is between ranked teams or not!

According to this website, Carroll's gym hold 1,100.

The "big" Carroll/Whitewater game had 597.
The Oshkosh game had 530
The conference game vs. Ripon had 726
The Lawrence game had 1800, so apparently it holds more than 1100!
Lake Forest had 812

Nonconference game vs. Concordia (nearby Mequon) was over 700

Most of the games looked like between 400-500.

I wouldn't anticipate a problem getting tix.

also, if anyone has some info...any truth to the rumors that Jerrod Bucholtz of Durand might be leaving Viterbo to head for Fast Eddie and the Blue Devils???

Yes this is true, 6'6" Jerrod Buchholtz (Durand class of 2005) is going to be leaving Viterbo at semester and will play for UW-Stout next season.  He was First Team All-Northwest last season after averaging 18.5 PPG and 8.7 RPG and helped lead Durand to the Middle Border Conference title.  He was also the leading scorer in the WBCA D2 All-Star game with 21.  He is a pretty athletic & versatile player with great outside range and should make an impact at Stout when he is able to play.

I've attended Carroll games since Van Male Gymnasium was renovated, and even with the tiny "capacity" of 1100, good seats are plentiful.  Usually only when Grinnell comes to town are the seating areas full, with the exception of the Lawrence contest last February.  My guess is that there were closer to 2000-2100 there (as opposed to the listed 1800), as people were lined up four deep along the baselines and corners.

I wouldn't put much weight in the attendance numbers that Old School gathered, however, because CC does not charge admission, making it quite difficult to count tickets or heads I would assume.  Regardless, there is no need to fret about being turned away at the door when the Pointers head to Waukesha.

Greg, I meant partial scholarships.

Given that adjustment, I stand by my statement as written.

And as I said, most D3 private-school students get financial aid of some sort. But the word "scholarship" is misleading, since people tend to assume that receiving a scholarship means that one's schooling is fully funded by the institution. That is most definitely not the case here. As I said, most private-school students end up taking out expensive student loans that take years to pay off.

Optimist, when was Van Male renovated? I haven't been there since Carroll left the CCIW in 1991. I'm curious as to what it looks like now.
