It's much nicer now.  They took the playing floor and rotated it 90 degrees, so that the sideline is now parallel to the long axis of the gym.  They put in more wood flooring so they have more quality practice area.

The first row of seats is kind of far from the sideline.  I'm not sure why they didn't add a few more rows.  Also, everytine I have been there, it has been rather cold in the gym.  I've usually left my coat on for most of the game.

Im 99% certain the renovation took place before the 2001-2002 season.

And as I said, most D3 private-school students get financial aid of some sort. But the word "scholarship" is misleading, since people tend to assume that receiving a scholarship means that one's schooling is fully funded by the institution. That is most definitely not the case here. As I said, most private-school students end up taking out expensive student loans that take years to pay off.

Greg,

The vast majority of public students end up with huge tutition debt that takes years to pay off as well.  But I'm sure you're aware of that.

What I have seen the private schools do with athletes they really want is to give them just enough money that their tutition is equal to or slightly less than that of the public  they are competing against.   A practice which I have absolutely no problem with and, in my mind, no different than a WIAC school's reciprosity with another state.

This subject is nearly as beaten a horse as the enrollment issue.  ;)

Any school that's doing that is breaking the rules of D3 and should be reported to the NCAA. I wouldn't make such sweeping judgments about private schools at large engaging in such practices. I highly doubt that such rule-breaking is epidemic among D3 institutions. And, yeah, I know that public-school students have tuition debt to pay off as well -- but it doesn't tend to run nearly as high for them as it does for their private-school counterparts, because the bill is so much higher at the privates.

Do they still have those crazy stands that run all the way along the sideline, but only go up four or five rows? Those were the strangest-looking stands I've ever seen in a basketball gym.

I always kinda liked Van Male. It was one of the longest road trips in the CCIW, but the gym had personality and the games were always good ones.

Those were portable bleachers and I believe they still use them, but only on the baselines now.  And they might only put them up for high demand games.  The new sideline bleachers are permament and have 8-10 rows, but still leave about 15 feet between the first row and the back of the players' benches.

My bad, Greg.  I didn't mean to imply that the privates are covertly offerring illegal athletic scholarships to recruit athletes.  I seriously doubt that and it's certainly not widespread.  But they do find them money whether it  be a presidential scholarship or a grant and I know of several specific examples.   However I'm sure it's all done within rules.

It wasn't my intention to keep the discussion going.  As I said, I don't really have any problem with it.  I only posted this to clarify that I didn't mean to imply they were doing anything unethical.

Badgerwarhawk, we met last year at the Whitewater regional.  I am the analyst for IWU basketball broadcasts on WJBC.

Can you help me sort out who the probable Whitewater starters will be this weekend?  Thanks.

Here is an IWU preview if you need it...

Mein Gott!

Over 45 years ago, people were amazed that Pekin (IL) won the state title with a 6'3" center (and, yes, he was the tallest guy on the team).  Even by d3 standards, those guys are midgets!

Gotta start gearing up for the weekend games!

--> Here's <-- the preview of the Point/Carroll game.  SID Jim Strick does an excellent job with these previews for each and every Pointer team and game (or week's worth of games) and they are chock full of stats and stories of the team, their opponent and the players.

In this installment...

-UW-Stevens Point has won 20 straight games against Midwest Conference opponents dating to a 68-51 loss at Ripon in 1976-77. Since then, the Pointers have beaten St. Norbert eight times, Lawrence five times, Carroll four times and Ripon three times.  (Point plays CC on Saturday, LU on Tuesday of next week and Ripon on Friday of next week)

-The Pointers have won 16 of their last 18 against ranked opponents and will play ranked opponents in its first two games this year against 17th-ranked Carroll and 14th-ranked Lawrence. They were 3-2 against ranked foes last year with losses at 21st-ranked UW-Oshkosh and 14th-ranked UW-Stout.

- Including the postseason, the Pointers are 62-5 in their last 67 games against non-WIAC opponents, dating to January 2000. Four of the five losses came last season.

- UW-Stevens Point led the NCAA Division III in free throw shooting
last season at 79.2 percent. Only Division I St. Joseph's (Pa.) shot
better from the line in all NCAA divisions at 79.9 percent.

- The Pointers led Division III in fewest turnovers last year at 10.6
per game. Only Division I teams Temple, West Virginia and Butler
were better at handling the ball last season in all NCAA divisions.

This is a great read... Like I said, Jim does an excellent job!

Gosh, they might need Martin Luther himself on the sideline to stay in this game.  (ML had to be pretty quick to avoid the catholic church back in the day).

size really doesn't matter too much.......except when you have a player of Freund's capabilities underneath...........a quick, trapping 1-3-1 or 2-3 zone might be ML's only preventative way of defending the post.......

although look at someone like mcneal from marquette.......i think he is listed at 6-4 but plays, due to arm span, like he is 6-9.......
