Falcons fall in close one to another ranked team, 69-66. Titans took a 16 pt. lead 2/3 of way thru first half, and led by 10 at half. RF went ahead by 3 w/about five minutes left, but could not hold on. Robertson left the game limping at about the 9 minute mark and did not return. Capelle and Davis both had sub-par games. Secar-Anderson was good off the bench for Osh with 12.
Thompson led RF w/15, hitting key threes second half. Osh had 13/16 f.t. while Falcons could only manage 7/10. A 7 t.o. game helped Osh. RF had 13 t.o.'s, 6 by Koonkaew who, nevertheless, played hard and ended with something like 14.

RF not quite there yet, but coming on down the stretch.

I hope Robertson is OK. He impressed me when I was at RF earlier this season. As to the UWP MEN, good clutch win at EC. I listened to the game onb the radio. Both teams shot poorly,UWP did a little better in the last 3 minutes. We play UWSP on wed with school in session, should be a huge crowd. I feel sorry for the UWEC mens fans. it looks like a slow desent for Coach Gibbons and the Golds. This was a Blessings! game they needed to win to keep their heads above water!

Yes, UWP defeated UWEC 53-47 after trailing almost the entire 2nd half.  It was actually a pretty boring game despite being close the whole way.

Final was UW-Platteville 53 (9-5, 4-3), UWEC 47 (7-8, 1-6)

With apologies to Cool Hand Luke, but I believe what we have here is a failure to execute.

Up 47-45 with 2:47 left and the ball, coming out of a timeout the 'Golds let 20 seconds run down on the shot clock, only to launch a desperation three at the buzzer, rebounded by Platteville. They go down and tie it...

Next possession, 'Golds run another full shot clock, down to 1:31 left in the game, only to miss a layup just before it expires. Platteville goes down and hits a 3 by Bo Richter, to go up 50-47 at the 1:07 mark...

Golds come down, looking for a shot, as time winds down take a T0 with 40 seconds left, then miss the only shot during that possession with 27 seconds left. UWP rebounds, goes down and hits one of two free throws, making it 51-47...

Golds rebound the miss, and on a subsequent UWP foul, and a chance to pull within two with 21 seconds left, both free throws are missed...  Golds rebound and get off two more shots until UWP rebounds with 11 seconds left, and go to the other end to nail it with two free throws. Missed 3 at the end of the game for the 'Golds. Final 53-47...

So, if you fell asleep in all of that, 'Golds missed all six of their last shots in the final 2:47, plus two free throws. Platteville hits its final two shots, sandwiched between three of four from the line by Kyle Tetschlag... End of story...

UWEC's post players had nice games. Held a 39-27 advantage on the boards. Dan Beyer pulled down 13, with 16 points. Jared Bardon adds 11 points.

Charlie Lohoff has 13 points, Tetschlag 11, plus four blocks, and Mark Gossens 10, with three blocks; he was held to just 3-14 from the field, though. But the Golds only hit 8-29 (27.6%) in the second half, vs. 10-23 (43.5%) for the Pioneers.

I was impressed by the intensity of Platteville's D, especially Mike Jamerson, who had a lot of deflects and defensive frustrations that don't show up in the box score... Platteville had hands up on D the whole night, and few 'Golds shots went up without a hand in the face....

Halftime score was UWEC up 27-24.
Hats off to the Adams-Friendship middle school pep band, and twirlers, who performed...

Whitewater takes care of business by topping a disappointing Stout team, 79-66.

Whitewater came out of the gates pretty fast (at least compared to Stout) and held a seemingly comfortable 11-pt lead (19-8) with about 11 minutes to go in the first half.  Stout came to life and actually took the lead briefly by 3 with about 3 minutes to go and the crowd wasn't surprised.  They've apparently seen this before.  But, Whitewater tightened the screws and was able to regain that lead by half and went into the break with a 5-pt cushion.

Thankfully for the elders in the stands and the ones with existing heart conditions, Whitewater was able to hold that lead for the whole second half and built it up to double-digits with about 16 minutes to go and were never threatened.

I say a disappointing Stout team because numerous times they needlessly threw the ball away or (in tennis terms) had unforced errors.  Jason Clopton, who I thankfully didn't start in my fantasy league, coughed the ball up six times, included twice for "double dribbling" whiile bringing the ball up court with no one on him.  Enerson-Matthews was unstoppable going for 26, though he too had a lot of turnovers (four) and Jacob Nonemacher had a good game with 14 pts and 9 rebs. before fouling out.  I think Stout can be a good team next year with only the Nonemachers and Clopton graduating.  Obviously J.E-M is a stud to be and Heisler is a solid post player, along with a nice guard in Randle.  The guards have a lot of work to do and that's understandable after the losses Andrist has incurred.  There was a lot of miscommunication, some standing around and several errant passes.

On the other side of the ball, Freund looked really good as shown by his 17 and 7.  Jason Price was dangerous, but needs to look for the pass a little more.  There were several times when he came down and either forced a shot or ran into a double.  I counted at least three times when  Mlachnik was standing alone and Price could've made the easy pass.  With Mlachnik on my fantasy team, I kept a close eye on him and he disappointed.  Sometimes "standing alone" isn't always a good thing.  I felt he needed to move to the ball a little more and possibly "demand it"...I don't think I heard him say a word the whole game!  He's a senior and the point guard...Whitewater didn't miss Rob Perry's inside absence too much with Freund causing troubles and even Toellner taking it inside and getting to the line.

On a side note, it was surprising when both Stoutguy and Badgerwarhawk informed me that the Nonemachers wanted to meet me.  My first thought was, "Have I said anything bad about them lately?"  They assured me that it was a going to be a good meeting!  That it was.  Both nice guys and John wants to find some basketball as a profession and he was disappointed that I dropped him in my fantasy league, but he understood.  Didn't say much to Jacob as he had another friend there.  It was a treat to meet them.

Oh yeah, one last thing...for BADGERWARHAWK...

How is Gio Riley taking his benching.  He's gotten a lot of minutes the last few games and seems to do well when playing.  A senior guard moving from the starting position to the bench can effect a player sometimes.  Is he taking it ok?  He really looks motivated when he's out on the floor...unlike Mlachnik, who seemed to just be going through the motions out there, IMO, at least in last night's game...

Why didn't Rob Perry play yesterday?

Late scratch...I think an ankle injury, but BW will have to confirm.  I did find it interesting that Perry didn't go into the locker room with the rest of the team at the break and after hanging out in the lobby, when coming back in, I actually saw Perry in the lobby talking to some friends/family a couple of minutes before the second half was to begin and while the rest of the Whitewater team was in warming up.  That seemed kind of strange to me.  Would you want to be in there with the team, or at least the COACH wanting you in there with the rest of the team?  Maybe that's just me! lol.

Rob injured his knee.   Whether he starts or substitutes Gio always plays hard.

Very nice to see both yourself and Stoutguy.

MID SEASON AWARDS!

Quote from: Mr. Downtown on January 11, 2007, 12:13:57 PM
Also, I know other boards do this, but anyone interested in doing a midseason awards poll? Would be interesting to see who everyone thinks is deserving to be all-conference, player of the year, coach of the year and stuff.

Quote from: cubs on January 11, 2007, 01:17:05 PM
I don't want to speak for Old School, but he usually has kept track of that stuff in the past...

Half way point is Wednesday, feel free to select your midseason conference awards through the week.  I'll try to have the results posted this weekend.  I'll be in Point for the River Falls game, so it may come Friday night or Sunday night...

10-player All-Conference Team (the WIAC has 10, so we'll go with 10)

Coach of the (Mid) Year

Player of the (Mid) Year

Most surprising team (let's try to keep it positive)

Reg. Season Conference Winner

Sleeper (not necessarily has to win the conf. but could make some noise and surprise)

PLEASE TRY TO FILL OUT THE WHOLE BALLOT.  THANKS!  :P

Anyone know what happened to Nick Messner?  Boxscore says Hill started but same zeros across the board.  He started, but didn't log a minute and zeros across the board...hurt?  The stats add up, except for the total minutes.
