NCAA West Region Rankings-records through last Sunday, I believe.

West Region
1. UW-Stevens Point 22-2 21-1
2. St. Thomas 22-3 22-3
3. St. John's 19-6 19-3
4. UW-Oshkosh 20-5 17-5
5. Occidental 17-5 12-3
6. Whitworth 22-3 19-3
7. Loras 19-6 17-4
8. UW-La Crosse 17-7 15-6

This Table is from this site, by winning %.  Teams listed in bold are Pool A (AQ) contenders

   Team      Region      QOWI      Next game
Stevens Point      23-1      11.583 (2nd overall)      vs La Crosse WIAC Tourney Final
St. Thomas      23-3      10.692 (6th)      vs St. John's MIAC Tourney Final
St. John's      20-3      10.391 (17th)      vs St. Thomas MIAC Tourney Final
Whitworth      19-3      9.909 (38th)      vs Lewis and Clark NWC Tourney Final
   Occidental      14-3      10.412 (14th)      reg. season complete
Loras      18-4      10.000 (32nd)      vs Buena Vista IIAC Tourney Final
Lewis and Clark      14-4      9.778 (44th)      vs Whitworth NWC Tourney Final
   Redlands      13-4      9.235 (68th)      reg. season complete
Oshkosh      18-6      9.917 (36th)      season complete-lost to LC in Semis
La Crosse      17-6      9.913 (37th)      vs Stevens Point WIAC Tourney Final
   Chapman      13-5      8.136 (145th)      reg. season complete
   Puget Sound      15-6      8.952 (92nd)      season complete-lost to L&C in Semis
   Ponoma-Pitzer       11-5      9.000 (87th)      reg. season complete

The more I look at it, the more I've come to the realization that La Crosse isn't getting a Pool C bid.  If they lose, their QOWI goes down, but they do have 3 wins against ranked opponent Oshkosh to look at.  But, they would be 0-3 v Point and 0-1 v Loras.  They do have a win against St. Thomas though, as well.

I can't figure out why the QOWI changes so much so fast, yesterday Point was at 11.250 according to a post by pabegg and today according to Mr. D3 it is 11.583???? If LX would manage to pull off an upset  :o and St. Thomas wins could UWSP still be the #1 seed  in the west?? Does the NCAA go solely by QOWI in their choices?

I'd be happy (NOT) to explain everything to you, but Greg Sager does a nice job of it via the NWC page.

For a quick review of the QOWI, you get points for winning and losing games against opponents that have certain winning %s.  Point's QOWI can change quickly simply by a team that they played losing or winning a game last night, even without Point playing...and even a team that played a team that Point played.

Quality of Wins Index FAQ on this site

If you get really bored, you can figure out anyone's QOWI on your own.  GREAT FUN!

As much as I enjoy reading all the paranoid rumblings that emanate from the left-coasters every year around this time, it's not as simple as being a matter of "respect" or lack thereof. The five primary criteria listed in the D3 men's basketball championship handbook that are used for selection and seeding purposes do not include "respect" among them. Those criteria are:

* regional winning percentage
* regional Quality of Wins Index
* in-region record against ranked teams
* in-region record head-to-head
* in-region record against common opponents

According to those criteria, Oxy is currently fifth in the West Region and Whitworth is currently sixth. That's a recipe for some fairly low seeding for both teams. Even if the Pirates join the Tigers in the D3 tourney field, neither will be seeded high enough to merit hosting a secondary-round game or games.

BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!
BDshotblocker has come to a decision on who's 3 v 3 team he will join!!!!!!!!!!

An annoucement will be made after the men's game.

As soon as Swampgoon gains his "posting" eligibility, it won't matter.  You better be able to shoot the "3" because you won't have any post play with Swampgoon manning the box with his lead pipe.  He can also launch the 3 without hesitation.  We used to live next to each other and he could throw it from my steps across the picket fence and into the basket on his garage.  Where do you think Michael Jordan and Larry Bird got the ideas for those McDonald's ad commericals?  OK, maybe not all that is entirely true.  ;D
I could also shoot it from my steps, get the ball to travel down the electric wires running from the house to the garage, and go in.....The older I get, the better I was.  ;)

Greek Tragedy

Watch out, Swampgoon is now eligible for the 3 v3 posters basketball league.

Men's Basketball
The first record listed is the overall record, followed by record in regional games, through Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007. These are the last rankings we'll see before they select teams. Teams in BOLD are Pool A candidates, unless already noted.

There may be some mistakes, due to updated games and my inability to remember every Pool B team in contention! lol

Feel free to "quote" and update it.

Does the WICA dominate any other D3 sport like they do track & field?

Just Bill

Yes and No.  The WIAC does very well in just about every sport they compete in, but it's much harder to dominate a team sport than it is an individual sport, at least from a conference-wide viewpoint.

Game over.

FINAL:  Stevens Point 83, La Crosse 68.  All 5 Point starters in double figures.  Point shoots 51.8 for the game.  Werner scores 19 and Fehrenbach 16.

As someone who has played all three of these teams i do hope all make it to the tourny.  It would be a shame to have a top 20 team lose to the #1 team on their floor and then not make it in favor of someone who may not be ranked.

I have a great deal of respect for everyone an any team in the land but what is the point of ranking teams if it has no bearing on selection day.  WIAC bias (I am a little) and public vs private aside the best should play.

Good luck Lax and Oshy keep your uniforms ready.

maybe someday DIII will have a NIT (wishful thinking i know)

The D3hoops.com Top 25 is a private poll and has no bearing upon the NCAA's selection of the 59 teams in the tourney field.

There will most likely be several Top 25 teams that are left out in the cold this year, and both UWO and UWL might be among them. Both look pretty iffy for Pool C bids at this point.

I guess i hold D3 hoops as THE poll since you do so much so well.

I rember all this from last year. Why can't the best teams in the country all get a chance for the prize.  The best conferences should get the most in (maybe i have been watching to much ESPN) I love DIII and no matter what conference is ranked best then thye should be represented as such.  Beat the best to be the best.

I think I am so passionate cause I have played with these guys for years and have played teams outside of this conference that make to the "dance" and wonder how in the h@#%.

Greg, Pat and all involved with this site I can not begin to tell you how much we as players use it as our sportcenter to here what others are doing..... Thank you

Oshkosh and LaX are especially iffy as there needs to be 4 CCIW teams in the tourney for it to be competitive.  ::)

I really wouldn't call this past season for UWW "terrible" or "horrible".  They did finish the season pretty strong, I think 6 of our losses were by a combined 22 points or something, but the leadership that was provided by Manchester and Williams at the guard position really hurt us.  There was really no go-to guy for us, Price could have been that person who hit big shots, but really when you look at it, we lost a lot of stupid games because of turnovers, free-throws, and that all comes down to discipline.

I'm no coach, but Miller should get his guys to really buy into some kind of system, UWSP is really, really good and we had the talent to compete, but lost those games by what, 4 points?  We were 10-6 in conference, beat Oshy once and one or two plays here and there and they could have gone to the playoffs.  I congratulate UWSP on a great year, hope that 3 teams get in and can show how strong this conference is.  I also thank Toellner, Malachnik, Anderson, Gio, Freund, and prolly forgetting others for playing this year.  Too bad they didn't live up to the potential, but other teams stepped up their game, La Crosse and UWSP will prove that in the playoffs for sure.
