Everyone who DIDN'T pick Point in 2005 please respond by saying "Aye!"

[crickets chirping]

That's what I thought.
I picked them in 2004.... before the Conference Tourney... AND was there in Salem to see myself be right. ;D :P

As a Pointer fan, I'm saving all this "next year" stuff for later.

Continue on with your conversation! lol.

Hey Nonemachers...

It's been said you guys didn't play organized basketball or were never recruited or whatever until you guys sent out your own tapes.  How is it that guys your height didn't play in high school (or did you) or weren't recruited simply because of your height?

We also were blessed with a metabolism running at supersonic speed so no matter how much we eat or work out it is hard to gain weight.  (bout 255 lbs today)

I know what you mean, but I haven't been stuck on 255, just a bit lower.  :P

We were cut from our High School team junior year (didn't try out until then).  Played in a bar league (sponsered by a bar at 17, "Mooses", only in Montana) junior and senior year.

We use to "break" into our HS gym 3 times a week to shot.  Ok, didn't really break into it, just pounded on doors until we found one open.

After high school feeling like bball wasn't an option we went about our lives in seperate states, me in Green Bay WI, Survivor in Phoenix AZ then Reno NV, and continuing with our habit of sneaking into gyms. Playing point guard (that's right point guard) in mens leagues just to stay around the game.  Soon D1 schools were a knockin.  UW-Green Bay seemed the most interested so Survivor joined me up north.

UWGB's coach was going to be fired and the assistent (Ben Johnson) who everyone thought was going to take over, kept in close contact with us waiting for things to settle down.  Surprise suprise, the whole staff was let go.

Two years later, Suvivor sent out emials, not even tapes, to 30+ D3 schools seeing if anybody would bite.  Stout and WW did and we made our choice. (maybe he will recreate the emial, it's a classic)

By the way, Stevens Point was #1 on our list of schools we wanted to attend because we knew of what the Bennett's mean to basketball in Wisconsin.

So, what was in your lives that sent you to GB and Zona/NV?  Interesting choices.  Jobs?

Being in GB, I'm surprised St. Norb's didn't see ya.  Good stuff.  Though it might have been nice to have at least ONE 7-footer the last two years for Point, I'm definitely not going to question the coaching staff's recruiting choices! lol.  ;D

My emails were as polite as possible to the point they were dorky but i had no idea who was on the other end so they were simple.  all it was were our names, no high school expierience, that we were older, height (thought we were 6'10") and all we wanted was a chance to play.  One year tryout and if we could not cut it or was wasting a roster spot or their time we would leave.

While we were on the email together it was NOT a package deal.  We acually thought Jake was going to WW and me to Stout but after our visits Jake came to stout too (construction major which is what he was wroking for years). Why WW, his gf, now wife, was attending there but she then trasfered to EC and graduated.

Stout was an underdog school for a couple of underdog players.

we were 22 as freshman

I'm 28 and a freshman, 6-6 with no jump shot (ask voft.... it's hideous, akin to a penguin jumping). Maybe I need to try your methods!
"Drew, where's that story?"

Our mom raised us Packer fans so.......the move to Green Bay.  Looking back it had some risks,  no job, no place to live, just a pick-up truck full of everything I had.  Found a residential home building job two days later and a place to live a week later.

Didn't know St. Norberts was there for about a year and never went into there gym, played in the GB gym.  I don't think they know who I was (don't scout players on the outdoor courts i guess  :D)

That's a great story, you guys.  Thanks for sharing it.  I wish I'd know all that when you came to Wooster last year, and I wish I'd introduced myself.  :)

SJU scouting report:

Tyler Westman-  6'3'' Senior  Wing--- 30 minutes a game, 14 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 43% 3pt FG, 80% at the line. He shoots the ball very well when he's on but very poorly if he's off. Lacks slightly on the defensive end.

Ryan Leiser-  6'1'' Junior   Wing----  32 minutes a game, 13.1 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 34% 3pt FG. The kid can shoot and is the Johnnies main stopper on D. His numbers suffer when he guards a big time player.

Matt Ohme- 6'2'' Senior   Point---- 29 minutes a game,  9 ppg, 3 rpg, 115 assists. This guy runs the show. 4 year starter at SJU. Great ball handler, good size and strength. Drives and dishes well. Very smart player.

Craig Schafer- 6'7'' Senior   Post---  22 minutes a game, 12ppg, 7 rpg, 63% FG. He has a tough hook shot. Very good rebounder.

Scott Schafer- 6'7'' Senior  Post--- 18 minutes a game,  6ppg, 4rpg, 48% FG. Solid player. Jim Smith(SJU head coach) tends to sit him down the stretch in favor of Brady Brink.

Jason Fogt- 6'9'' Junior   Post---- 12 minutes a game,  5.5ppg, 3rpg, 57% FG. BIG BODY. I would guess he is around 255-260 lbs. Good turn around jumper. Solid post moves. Very physical. If he plays alot he will pick up fouls.

Brady Brink- 6'5'' Junior Wing/Post----- 23 minutes a game, 8ppg, 6 rpg. MIAC 6th man of the year. Very long, very athletic, Lacks strength, good shooter solid ballhandler.

Nick Johnson- 5'10'' Junior   Point----- 13 minutes a game, He doesn't score alot but he runs the show very well when Ohme is out. Not the best shooter. He is small and quick which makes him SJU's second best defender.

SJU goes past 8 players but the other 3 or 4 that play don't do anything major.
