BuckyC, food for thought, since D3's don't sign LOI, nobody really "lands" anybody until the first day of classes and they're enrolled in school!!  Lots can happen between now and then.

And did it ever occur to you that they may not be looking for high school seniors right now......rather JUCO transfers for immediate help??  Look at their top two recruits from last year, a starting center and a 6th man frosh who anyone in the WIAC will tell you is pretty good.

And did it ever occur to you they finished 8th in the 9 team conference and lost to the 9th place team in their final home game?  UWEC will be lucky if they win 4 conference games next season.

I just can't wait for Friday night. I know I need to get a life, but I've been shaking ever since I got my ticket.
If it makes you feel better, I totally win the nerd prize. I made myself a packet.

Any truth to the rumor that there is going to be a Head Coach resignation at UWEC today?

Mythical Bird what do you know?

Coach Buchanon at UW-Superior landed another blue chip recruit this week in Jake Smith from Rhinelander. This is in addition to getting Shane Manor from Altoona and word is that he is heavily pursuing Dan Culy from Rice Lake who will be Big River Conference POY after the dust settles this season.

How in the sam hill does Coach Gibbons even keep his job at UWEC with a below .500 record this season and letting all these solid recruits get away??  Has UWEC lost it's pride?  Have the people of Eau Claire become aloof when it comes to basketball?  UWEC has become an absolute disgrace to every basketball banner that hangs from .the rafters at Zorn arena and it is time for a change!!!!!!

And I thought I was harsh on Gibbons ;).  Coach Buchanon is well on his way to changing the atmosphere of Superior Basketball.  Attendence even seems to be up!!!!!!!!!

... Discussion about the program sure is!

Speaking of Gibbons,  there was a "Voice of the People" letter by a UWEC  fan in yesterday's EC Leader Telegram, pleading for a coaching change.

While some transfers can provide some immediate help, in my opinion that should not be the "focus" of recruiting for most programs.  When you are at where EC is right now, you need people that are around for 4 years to learn the ins-outs of the offense/defense, develop chemistry, and to become familar with the play in conference, thus building the program back up (hopefully).  Trying to lure a bunch of transfers looks to me like a short-term fix rather than a long-term one.

EC did get a couple good transfers this year.  However, it took Hoelzel almost the entire year to get comfortable.  He did put some good games together late in the season, but he now only has one year left and then he is gone.  Not a whole lot of time to get things together.  On the other hand, Probst should be around 4 years (3 more).

Just Bill

The other problem with trying to "lure" transfers is that you can't talk to them directly unless the get a release from their current school.

So, all your efforts have to go toward checking with past high school coaches, or asking a friend to ask a friend if the player might be interested.  After a while, you start to feel kinda slimy and you risk pushing into the "gray area" of recruiting.

The coaches that have good luck with transfers are usually A) very well connected in among HS and AAU coaches and B) did a really good selling job when the kid as a high school senior.  Evertime you lost a kid, you always wanted it clear that there were no hard feelings at all, and the kid could always call again in the future if things didn't work out.  Good coaches know they have to make that point strongly, because once they start attending their new school, they are completely off-limits.

Getting transfers is really about the relationship you build before the kid goes to college.  It's almost impossible to build that relationship after they go to college (without cheating).
