Hey, don't say bad things about Taco Johns.  Back in my grad school days at UW-L, living above a bar on the north side of town, across Copeland Ave from a Taco Johns, it sustained us like you don't know.  They had a 3 for 1 or 4 for 1 taco night that we lived on for 2 years.  My roommates and I nicknamed them "The Lord" because the first time we indulged in this culinary delight, an old Jack Lord film was on tv (from before the Hawaii 5-O times).  Still brings a smile to my face!!  These days I hate most taco's, but I would do anything for one from The Lord!!

Stopped at the Taco Johns (by the big orange moose) at the Black River Falls exit off
I 94 last March on the way from IL up to St. Thomas in Mn for a D3 tourney game.
Not only did we survive,  but took on enough (taco) gas to make the rest of the trip without any further stops!  ::)   :-[   :D   ;D

No offense intended but the Taco Johns in WHITEWATER had the worst food imaginable.   It was a blessing from God when it went out of business.

UW-La Crosse's Joe Werner went through a workout today for the Green Bay Packers.  A Packer scout came to UW-L to put Werner through drills and testing (basically what is done at the NFL combine).  He's trying out for Tight End, only know a couple of test results...

36" vertical (2nd or 3rd best among all TE in the draft)

10'3" standing long jump (best among all TE in the draft)

4.70 second 40 time (the track coach's stop watch had a 4.68, but the scout had to use his result)

Joe Werner in a Packer uniform ..... in the great words of Borat "very nice"

Good luck to him in his pro tryouts.

That was the most overrated movie this side of The Blair Witch Project.  I've never seen his "Ali G in Da House" HBO show (or Showtime or whatever), but I heard the whole movie was basically extended sketches from that show.  I thought it was a bad movie and if I had actually watched any of his cable shows, I'm sure I would've thought it was even worse.  I need to write MGM or Family Video and get my $3.00 back...and I'm still coming to grips realizing that I'll never get those two hours of my life back that I wasted watching it.

Good luck to Joe Werner as well.

Good luck to Joe Werner though admittedly I'll be pretty surprised if he isn't playing basketball overseas next season.

I would sit on the packer bench before playing overseas, but I am a tall Packer fan.

It is nice to have those options ... hmmmmm pro football or pro basketball .... what to do, what to do.

he will do well wehre ever he goes.

He had a nice workout, but he hasn't played football in a long time.

Of course, Pete Gent had a similar background and had a nice NFL career.

Did Antonio Gates play football in college?  Wasn't he just a basketball guy?  He seems to be doing just fine.  If Joe were to get a roster spot, I don't see him being the blocking type.  He's smart, but NFL offenses are complex and not playing college football could be too much for him.

I wish him luck and I think it would be great if he gets the chance.

I do think that Gates did NOT play football in college and you have seen teams look at more and more basketball guys.  Lewis from George Mason is one who was givin a strong look at (not sure if he made the final roster or not)

The word on the street is that the Packers are looking and need a tight end not to block but to catch and while Joe has been out of football the coached are not dumb,  like a second string quarterback playing for the first time the number of plays he will be asked to learn and perform on the feild maybe limited till he gets his feet wet.  Strickly a situational guy.

Joe is one of my favorite players in this league and i have enjoyed playing against him, I might have to get one of those "Joe Werner Fan Club" t-shirts some of the fans wore to his games if he makes the NFL  ;D

Why didn't Werner play football at LaCrosse? More heavily recruited for basketball? Not recruited at all for football (if so, if he couldn't make LAX football, could he make Packers--no wisecracks, please), recruited for both and had to make a decision? Seems odd to play college basketball--and so well--and then decide to go to football. Or, maybe this is just a lark.

so many questions

There's no way any NFL team is going to put a player who could only participate in limited plays and is a project who needs to put on 30 lbs on their roster.  No way.   I don't even see them putting that athlete on the practice squad unless they figure he can be developed by the next season.   Which for someone who hasn't played the game at any level for 6-7 years would be a huge jump.

I wish him the best of luck though and most everyone posting here knows I've been mistaken in the past so who knows.  It's just hard for me to fathom.  :D

The story that I had heard was that he was recruited to play football at LaCrosse and switched to basketball but, now, learning that he hadn't played hs football his last two years that story seems kinda odd.

I researched Gates a little bit.  He originally went to Michigan State to play both football and basketball, but the football coach recinded on his offer.  So Gates decided basketball only and transfered a few times until he landed at Kent State.  He was a "tweener" in basketball terms so tried out for the Chargers and the rest is history.

Lewis from George Mason is playing basketball overseas.  He lasted one day in Giants camp and quit.

I do believe that Joe Werner grew considerably after he got to UWL, that includes height and weight.  He's worked hard to get to where he is at now.

Some pretty good talent there...especially on the Galaxy Restaurant team.  Everyone in Winona knows what Anthony Atkinson is capable of in end-game situations, and Greg Brown is a former Mr. Basketball in the state of Wisconsin.

Personally, I'm still throwing a fit that my 3-on-3 buddy didn't make the final cut which definitely sucks.... but way to have good sportsmanship about it. :)
