Deputy DA: UW-La Crosse student lied during drowning probe

LA CROSSE, Wis. - A University of Wisconsin-La Crosse freshman will be charged Tuesday for lying to police investigating the death of fellow student Lucas Homan last fall, acting La Crosse County Deputy District Attorney Tim Gruenke said.

The student, a guard on the UW-La Crosse basketball team, lied about several "important facts" during the investigation, Gruenke said.

Homan, 21, of Brookfield, also played basketball at the university. He disappeared after drinking downtown during the city's Oktoberfest celebration, and his body was pulled from the Mississippi River on Oct. 2.

He was the eighth college-aged man to drown in La Crosse area rivers since 1997.

His teammate will be charged with two misdemeanor counts of obstructing officers, Gruenke said. He did not provide other details on the case, but stressed that the student is not a suspect in Homan's death, which is still under investigation.

I see Badgerwarhawk got this in earlier than I could.

I want to reemphasize that the young man is NOT a murder suspect.  I believe that he told the police that Homan had been drinking at a particular La Crosse Bar, and it was not true.

I may post more tomorrow.

A surprising twist to a sad story.

Any idea if the Waller kid will get much floor time this year for LaCrosse?

Agree completely.

What's sadder to me is that I believe these incidents are accidental drownings and I don't believe any thing can be done that will guarantee they won't happen again in the future.   Things can reduce the probability and frequency perhaps but not eliminate it.

Apparently, the person charged was drinking with Homan and went down to the river with him.  This was proven with tracking dogs.  He said nothing about this, and gave information about conflict with others in a downtown bar.  He mentioned glass bottles being used as weapons, but the bar served in plastic bottles that night.

Again I emphasize, the authorities do not suspect him of being responsible for Homan's death.  He is being charged with obstructing justice.

Which new recruits will have the biggest impact this upcoming season?

Will the UWW D1 transfers shine over everyone else?
Is Tony Mane really going to have an impact at UW-L?
Will UW-Sup play its freshmen early and take their lumps for the benefit of future seasons?

What about any grey-shirts?  Any impact from these unknown fellows?

This could be interesting trying to figure out the standings for next season.  Especially when you're not really sure who will end up coming out at each school.  As of today I'd go with...

2007-08 order of finish...

UW-W
UW-P
UW-SP
UW-St
UW-L
UW-RF
UW-O
UW-EC
UW-S

I'll be interested to see what others think.

As far as the new impact players, I'd say the D-1 at Stout sounds good and as always WW will have those transfers that will play and contribute a lot.  The biggest return will likely be Skemp at P if he's anywhere near his old form.  That could push them to the top of the league.  Point will be good but I'm not sure they can fill in for Krull with what they have right now.

Looking forward to the season
