Listen Ponche,

If you wanna discuss football, or Al-Qaida, or your anti-abortion stance fine but the Simpsons are vulgar, demeaning and representative of all that's wrong with today's society.

Expand you mind beyond "d'oh" and "have a cow man" ... think for once what it is that really attracts you to this show.  What is this show sanctioning in the minds of your kids (assuming you have some)?

Ponche?  Interesting.  I've always had a weird fascination with Eric Estrada.

Believe what you want about the Simpsons, I don't really care.  My point is that it's not your place (or anyone else's, except maybe Pat) to dictate what can and cannot be discussed on this message board, especially in the off-season.  If you don't like it, don't participate, but don't tell everyone else what's on and off limits.

I allow my children to watch The Simpsons but I require that they also watch reruns of Leave It To Beaver to balance it out.

I think he is upset cause he's a South Park fan and feels threatened by the Simpsons new movie, which will be better than the South Park one a few years back.

Many of todays problems are brought up in the Simpsons and are used in a comical dialogue with lovable characters.  Does this mean the Daily Show or Colbert Report are the same garbage as the Simpsons because they choose today's news and make fun of it or use humor to report what's happening.

I've wasted enough words already on this and I agree with Just Bill.  I personally am looking forward to the movie, and I think I almost have my wife talked into going with me.

Aren't you contradicting yourself?

Anyway, last time I checked, The Simpsons, Leave It to Beaver, South Park or any other fiction show on television is for entertainment purposes.

I found a Simpson's message board:

http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?webtag=ab-simpsons

Think I'll go over there and talk some WIAC hoops.  ;D

In the meantime Francis, lighten up.

We're just having a little off season fun.

Who freaking cares about the Simpsons.
This is not an exhaustive list, but...
Me, Old School, BW, Just Bill, BDB, Pioneerhoops, Stoutguy, T2K (what, we agree?!) (it was not meant to be!), Duffman, GS, and Pat Coleman...

I can provide you a more thorough list of my childhood friends, college friends, and family friends as well as aquaintences and enemies if you would like.

This show has been around for 18 years.  It is an American institution, whether you want to acknowledge it as such or not.

QuoteThe TV show and now its movie sister are representative of all that is wrong in today's society.  A world in which the hero is an extremely over-weight, gluttonous, insensitive moron.
The TV show and movie are a caricature of our culture.  A caricature, by definition, is a description of something using exaggeration of some characteristics and oversimplification of others.  Now you can state that is is "representative of all that is wrong in today's society," but I ask you what is wrong with that?  If it brings to light topics and problems that needs dealing with, what better forum than a cartoon, where the subjects cannot be harmed.

The Simpsons has many realistic views of our American society.  The family regularly attends church, has many, many religious elements to it, has broad diversity.
QuoteAnd don't even give the message of irony because it doesn't apply!

It's the off-season.  This is the most discussion all summer.  If you have any pertinent basketball information, then by all means discuss away, but on this board, we are able to self-police the topics.  There's no need to drag down the discussion with comments like yours.

1) There's a football board.  It's right above this one.
2) You don't want to discuss an American cultural institution like the Simpsons, but you want to talk about Al-Qaida?  OK, fine.  In the 9-11 Commission's Report on the attacks, one of the conclusions was that the attacks occured in part due to a "Failure of Imagination" by the leadership of our country.  If the leadership lacks imagination, then are we, as citizens, not demanding imagination of these leaders?  Imagination is developed, honed, and piqued by "the arts," which, of course, are composed of expressive disciplines including visual arts and performing arts, both which are arts shown in The Simpsons.

So, in conclusion...  It isn't too much of a stretch to state that if you watched the Simpsons, you could have prevented 9/11.
