Greek Tragedy

Back from the Pointer Purple/Gold game and the brats and hamburgers were yummy!  Very nice crowd at the game tonight, probably the size of most games for other WIAC teams.  Not a knock on them, but just a great show of support for the Pointers.

The usual suspects looked good.  Hicklin hitting the mid-range jumpers, El-Amin doing well distributing and launching the three, Beamish being the all-around player he's expected to be and Pete Rortvedt not skipping a beat from his long-range bombs.

Jerome Wotachek looked good at the beginning, but seemed to fade a bit, while Drew Jackson was up and down the court as usual.

On to the younger and new guys.  ROSS Rortvedt looked real good.  Last year, he was coming in to play some solid "D" at the end of games, but tonight he also hit some good shots and wasn't afraid to shoot.  Louis Hurd looked the best of the freshman class.  He's built like a bigger Jon Krull and also wears #34.  I think because he played so well, potential impact player Scott Hoelzel didn't play as much as I thought he would.  Matt Moses also looked good and is hoping his playing time is similar to the beginning of last year, not the end of last year.  Freshman Jared Jenkins wasn't in uniform because he's still playing football.

On a side note, BanditUWSP said that both Chris Dorner and Brad Kalsow hurt themselves during the football season...not to say that either was planning on playing basketball.

Obviously, Pete Rortvedt, El-Amin, Beamish and Hicklin are starters.  But from there, it could be Wotachek, Hoelzel, Drew Jackson or Louis Hurd playing for the 5th spot.  We thought that Drew Jackson may be better served as the "super sub" 6th man that comes in and gives the team a spark off the bench.  Plus, I don't think he's a "banger" and with the other four, we really wouldn't have any inside presence, though Jackson rebounds well.  I don't think Wotachek has what it takes to start (though starting doesn't mean you get the most minutes).  He, Hoelzel or Hurd would give us some sort of post presence.

Once again, we have a deep bench and from tonight, I have a lot of confidence in the younger Rortvedt, Matt Moses, Hurd and Jackson (if Wotachek starts).

Thanks for the report, Old School...

I'm jealous; a few of those burghers had my names on them. Maybe a brat, or two, also... ;)

On the football board, I'd noted Kalsow had hurt himself in the game against the Blugolds on Saturday... So I looked him up, but didn't see him on the roster last year??? Did I just miss him, or did he skip a year??? Did he still have eligibility in hoops? Also, is Jason still an assistant coach?

May have to make the treck back to Point, but not to see the 'Golds get destroyed in Quandt. Ha... But rather maybe the lady hoopsters in Berg...

Greek Tragedy

Brad only played one year, when Jason played.  Jason is still an assistant.  We saw Shawn Lee show up and Jon Krull was also in attendence.

On the way home, heard that UW beat EC 74-35 or something like that.  Probst had 17 (only one in double-figures), I think, and Beyer had 5.

I checked the online in-game stats and Bucky was up 55-30, so I thought that was pretty respectable... But that was with about 12 minutes to go, while the Badgers were in the midst of a 46-30 lead ballooning to 65-32...

Probst's value just went up for your fantasy drafters.  ;)

Great synopsis OS. Louis Hurd will be a force much like Jon Krull was in his career. What a tough job it will be to "cut" four players from their lineup to make the final roster. I thought I had it all figured out until the game started and then I was pleasantly surprised by the way a couple of the sophs played. Way too many good looking guards on the team. I was also much impressed by your "Kobayashi" imitation I think I spotted you with two or three fistfuls of brats before the game ;D :D

Greek Tragedy

frodo,

Missed ya on Wednesday.  Oh well.  Cuts?  Are they necessary?  Right now there are 16 on the roster, how many can you have?  15 on last year's roster played in games.

Is there a roster limit?

Technically, only for the NCAA tournament.  Point has 15 jerseys and has only ever dressed 15 players.  For a team that uses just 15, this is great practice for the NCAA tournament, but there are some teams that do keep and dress many more (teams like Grinnell).  This puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to the NCAA tournament because they've got less players.  Now, that may have to do, in general, with the style as well, but...

PS, you are right about the NCAA Tournament limit, but the WIAC has its own roster limit for men's basketball of 20 players.

"That seems silly and pointless..." - Hoops Fan

The first and still most accurate description of the D3 Championship BeltTM thread.

Pioneer Hoops Fan

As explained to me by a Pioneer coach last week, the limit is 20 on the roster.  I don't know if there is a limit for "dressed" players.  He also indicated that with the limit of 20 that you can always take guys off, but if you're at 20 when you're roster is submitted at the beginning of the year, you can not add another player if a spot becomes available.  So if two weeks into the conference season, player #20 quits, and there is a kid that tried out and you want to bring back to fill that roster spot, you can't because you started the season with 20 players on the roster.

But if you start the season submitting 18 players on your roster, you can still add 2 guys that may have been hurt or whatever, since your starting roster was under 20.

Its always your starting roster plus.  Not a subtract one then add one.  The number only get bigger, not smaller.

Make sense at all?

chmarx

Kind of.

Thanks for the explanations, guys.  :)

Update from the  UWW- Edgewood scrimmage from 11/10/07
UWW came out looking like they were up too late the night before in the 1st 20 min session but only lost by 3 and woke up for the 2nd 20 min session and won by 7. Rob Perry looked like his old self but had some foul problems. King played good defense but his offense needs some work. Biggest problem is teammates getting the ball inside to both King and Mitchell. Veron looked good and rebounded well but they started him at center and that seemed a little different. The two new guards are easing into the mix and will be a good addition. For the first session Miller went 8 deep with Mitchell, Kolinske and Koski each getting some minutes. Biggest problem was defending against the 3 and finding someone on UWW that can shoot the 3 consistently.

My projected starters:

Matt Goodwin      G
Myles McKay        G
Rob Perry            F
Kory Vernon        F/C
Josh King             F/C

Greek Tragedy

Edgewood is going to be good this year.  With Averkamp and DeMarco in the middle, they are going to be a handful.  Point travels back down to the "YMCA" gym in Madison this year and I'll still have bad memories of them beating us down there two years ago.  Edgewood is picked 2nd in the NathCon.
